We examine the conditions under which the distinct positive emotions of hope versus pride facilitate more or less fluid cognitive processing. Using individuals' naturally occurring time of day preferences (i.e., morning vs. evening hours), we show that specific positive emotions can differentially influence processing resources. We argue that specific positive emotions are more likely to influence processing and behavior during nonoptimal times of day, when association-based processing is more likely. We show in three experiments that hope, pride, and a neutral state differentially influence fluid processing on cognitive tasks. Incidental hope facilitates fluid processing during nonoptimal times of day (compared with pride and neutral), improving performance on tasks requiring fluid intelligence (Experiment 1) and increasing valuation estimates on tasks requiring that preferences be constructed on the spot (Experiments 2 and 3). We also provide evidence that these differences in preference and valuation occur through a process of increased imagination (Experiment 3). We contribute to emotion theory by showing that different positive emotions have different implications for processing during nonoptimal times of day.  相似文献

Phonotactic probability refers to the frequency with which phonological segments and sequences of phonological segments occur in words in a given language. We describe one method of estimating phonotactic probabilities based on words in American English. These estimates of phonotactic probability have been used in a number of previous studies and are now being made available to other researchers via a Web-based interface. Instructions for using the interface, as well as details regarding how the measures were derived, are provided in the present article. Previous research has demonstrated that the number and frequency of lexical neighbors affects the perception of individual sounds within a nonword in a phoneme identification task. In the present research, the issue of what items should be considered part of a word's neighborhood was explored. These experiments, in which both lexical decision and phoneme identification tasks were used, demonstrate that lexical neighborhood effects are not limited to words that match the target item syllable initially (the cohort). Words that differ from a target only in their first phoneme influence the process of lexical access. This argues against the notion that word onsets serve a unique or special purpose in word recognition.  相似文献

The authors examined the role of intermediate, sublexical representations in spoken word perception. In particular, they tested whether flaps, which are neutralized allophones of intervocalic /t/s and /d/s, map onto their underlying phonemic counterparts. In 2 shadowing tasks, the authors found that flaps primed their carefully articulated counterparts, and vice versa. Because none of the flapped stimuli were lexically ambiguous (e.g., between rater and raider), these results provide evidence that such priming is sublexically mediated. Therefore, the current study provides further insights into when underlying form-based representations are activated during spoken word processing. In particular, the authors argue that phonological ambiguity, inherent in their flapped stimuli, is one of the conditions leading to the activation of underlying representations.  相似文献

The global psychophysical theory of summation and magnitude production of R. D. Luce (2002) had joint presentations of pairs of intensities (measured above threshold) being matched asymmetrically, with 1 component being 0 intensity and the other the matching intensity. For loudness, an intensity pair to the 2 ears is matched by an intensity in just 1 ear. Realizing this experimentally has been difficult, and so, this article extends the theory to the use of symmetric matches with the same intensity being used in both components. In addition, the representational aspect is much improved; a new formulation of the results of the earlier theory is presented; the theory for symmetric matches is outlined; and it is shown that if 1 form of segregation, right or left, holds for asymmetric matches and 1 for symmetric ones, then all forms of segregation hold.  相似文献

This article is based on ethnographic research conducted between 1998 and 2000 in British Columbia, Canada. In this article Luce brings together the narratives of queer women she interviewed about their experiences of trying to become parents with her own stories about doing the research. Both sets of stories explore the ways in which relationships between people are reproduced and represented through images of sexuality, reproduction, queerness, parents, and families. Shifting between telling about the tensions she experienced while doing ethnographic fieldwork and retelling women's stories about how their relationships to partners, fetuses, babies, and donors were perceived, the article draws attention to both political and methodological questions.  相似文献

A large number of multisyllabic words contain syllables that are themselves words. Previous research using cross-modal priming and word-spotting tasks suggests that embedded words may be activated when the carrier word is heard. To determine the effects of an embedded word on processing of the larger word, processing times for matched pairs of bisyllabic words were examined to contrast the effects of the presence or absence of embedded words in both 1st- and 2nd-syllable positions. Results from auditory lexical decision and single-word shadowing demonstrate that the presence of an embedded word in the 1st-syllable position speeds processing times for the carrier word. The presence of an embedded word in the 2nd syllable has no demonstrable effect.  相似文献

Previous research (Garber & Pisoni, 1991; Pisoni & Garber, 1990) has demonstrated that subjective familiarity judgments for words are not differentially affected by the modality (visual or auditory) in which the words are presented, suggesting that participants base their judgments on fairly abstract, modality-independent representations in memory. However, in a recent large-scale study in Japanese (Amano, Kondo, & Kakehi, 1995), marked modality effects on familiarity ratings were observed. The present research further examined possible modality differences in subjective ratings and their implications for word recognition. Specially selected words were presented to participants for frequency judgments. In particular, participants were asked how frequently they read, wrote, heard, or said a given spoken or printed word. These ratings were then regressed against processing times in auditory and visual lexical decision and naming tasks. Our results suggest modality dependence for some lexical representations.  相似文献

Event-related potentials were examined in the first and second languages of bilinguals, and in monolinguals. Stimuli were anomalous sentences presented one word at a time on a CRT monitor. The principal dependent measure was the N400 component, and an accompanying frontal negativity, which provided an estimate of the amount of time the nervous system takes to determine the semantic incongruity of a given word. The results indicate that N400 latency is slightly, but significantly, delayed in bilinguals, with monolinguals having the shortest mean N400 latency, the first language of bilinguals next, and the second language of bilinguals longest. The frontal negativity varied in amplitude somewhat independently of the parietal N400. The amplitude of the frontal negativity was sometimes reduced in the second language, tending to be smaller in those subjects who used their second language the least. Neither N400 nor the frontal negativity varied as a function of age of acquisition of the second language. The results are discussed with reference to the relative automaticity of language in bilinguals, and the sensitivity of N400 to variations in the automaticity of language processing.  相似文献
