The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in the emotional construction of life-threatening events (LTEs) that were chosen as self-defining by late adolescents. European American college students (41 women, 25 men) whose average age was 19 were selected from a larger sample (n = 139) because they reported at least 1 LTE among 3 self-defining memories. Memory narratives were elicited with a questionnaire (Singer & Moffitt, 1991–1992) and coded for emotional position. As expected, tough, action-packed positions were more prevalent in men's narratives, and compassionate positions were more prevalent in women's narratives. Unexpectedly, narratives that emphasized one's own vulnerability (fear or sadness) were equally prevalent for men and women, and women's emotional discourse was more conditional upon type of event, i.e., deaths vs. assaults. Findings provide the most explicit evidence to date that some gendered reminiscence practices found in prior studies of children are reflected in late adolescents' self-defining reminiscences. Implications are also discussed for a more situated understanding of gendered reminiscence pratices and for theories of identity development. 相似文献

In this paper we examine the impact of the social construction of ethnic identities on the likelihood of local community participation. We do so in the context of an applied interest in the current policy emphasis on partnerships between government and local communities in initiatives to reduce health inequalities, and a conceptual interest in the role of social representations in perpetuating unequal power hierarchies. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 75 residents of a deprived multi‐ethnic area in south England. Informants described themselves as African‐Caribbean, Pakistani and White English; half men and half women, aged 15–75. We draw attention to the way in which ethnic identities may be constructed in ways that undermine the likelihood of local community participation. Stereotypical representations of ethnically defined ingroups and outgroups (the ethnic ‘other’) constituted key symbolic resources used by our informants in accounting for their low levels of engagement with local community networks. We examine the content of these stereotypes, and highlight how their construction is shaped by historical, economic and social forces, within the context of the ‘institutional racism’ that exists in England. We proposed that mitral cell beta1-adrenoceptor activation mediates rat pup odor preference learning. Here we evaluate beta1-, beta2-, alpha1-, and alpha2-adrenoceptor agonists in such learning. The beta1-adrenoceptor agonist, dobutamine, and the alpha1-adrenoceptor agonist, phenylephrine, induced learning, and both exhibited an inverted U-curve dose-response relationship to odor preference learning. Phenylephrine-induced learning occurred in the presence of propranolol to prevent indirect activation of beta-adrenoceptors. Alpha1-adrenoceptor mediation may represent a novel mechanism inducing learning or may increase cAMP in mitral cells via indirect activation of GABA(B) receptors. We report two experiments using a concurrent-chains procedure in which one terminal-link schedule was fixed-interval 8 s and the alternative schedule changed randomly from day to day. In Experiment 1, the alternative schedule varied between 4 s and 16 s according to a pseudorandom binary sequence similar to the one used by Hunter and Davison (1985). Similar to results with concurrent schedules, pigeons' response allocation in the initial link was most sensitive to the schedules arranged in the current session, although some effect of prior history was evident. Overall sensitivity was lower than for comparable data from steady-state research. In Experiment 2, a unique value between 2 s and 32 s was used for the alternative-schedule delay in each session. Sensitivity levels were similar to Experiment 1 and remained unchanged across 61 sessions of training. For all subjects, sensitivity was greater when the alternative-schedule delay was greater than 8 s compared with when it was less than 8 s. Generalized-matching plots revealed evidence of clustering of data points into two groups for some pigeons, suggesting that a process similar to a categorical discrimination may have at least partly determined response allocation. Overall, this research shows that pigeons' initial-link response allocation can adjust rapidly to frequent changes in the terminal links. 相似文献

This study was designed to examine professional human resource managers recommendations and inferences about prototypical applicants who had identical qualifications, in which the presence of periods of unemployment and name (feminine, masculine) of applicants were manipulated. Results indicate that although overall income for female applicants was less than male applicants in some conditions, male applicants were penalized and evaluated more harshly than female applicants when they had experienced periods of unemployment. Specifically, male applicants with employment gaps were seen as less committed and as less hirable than their female counterparts. Overall, male applicants were less likely to be recommended for an interview, and, when they experienced multiple gaps, they were less likely to be recommended for further consideration. 相似文献

Early olfactory preference learning in rat pups occurs when novel odors are paired with tactile stimulation, for example stroking. cAMP-triggered phosphorylation of cAMP response element binding protein (pCREB) has been implicated as a mediator of learning and memory changes in various animals (Frank and Greenberg 1994). In the present study we investigate whether CREB is phosphorylated in response to conditioned olfactory training as might be predicted given the proposed role of the phosphorylated protein in learning. On postnatal day 6, pups were trained for 10 min using a standard conditioned olfactory learning paradigm in which a conditioned stimulus, Odor, was either used alone or paired with an unconditioned stimulus, Stroking (using a fine brush to stroke the pup). In some instances stroking only was used. The pups were sacrificed at 0, 10, 30, or 60 min after the training. Using Western blot analysis, we observed that the majority of olfactory bulbs in conditioned pups (Odor + Stroking) had a greater increase in pCREB activation at 10 min after training than pups given nonlearning training (Odor only or Stroking only). The phosphorylated protein levels were low at 0 min and at 60 min after training. This is in keeping with the slightly delayed and short-lived activation period for this protein. The localization of pCREB increases within the olfactory bulb as seen by immunocytochemistry. Naive pups were not exposed to odor or training. There was a significantly higher level of label in mitral cell nuclei within the dorsolateral quadrant of the bulb of pups undergoing odor-stroke pairing. No significant differences were observed among nonlearning groups (Naive, Odor only, or Stroking only) or among any training groups in the granule or periglomerular cells of the dorsolateral region. The localized changes in the nuclear protein are consistent with studies showing localized changes in the bulb in response to a learned familiar odor. The present study demonstrates that selective increases in pCREB occur as an early step following pairing procedures that normally lead to the development of long-term olfactory memories in rat pups.
