Pitch memory for short tones

Ten listeners judged a 300-msec tone as higher or lower in pitch than another 300-msec tone that occurred 8 sec earlier. The intervening time either was unfilled or contained a 400-msec interpolated tone. This interpolated tone occurred either just after the first tone or just before the final one, and was of a frequency either inside or outside the critical band of the target frequency. Performance for the silent-interval condition was about as good as has been reported for pitch discrimination with no delay when the target was 250 Hz but was slightly poorer for the target at 1,550 Hz. Presence of the interpolated tone decreased the slope of the psychometric [unction and produced constant error for nine Ss. These effects were more pronounced when the interpolated tone occurred 50 msec after the target than when it preceded the comparison tone by 50 msec. Both brevity of the target tone and occurrence soon thereafter of an interpolated tone are required to produce constant errors of pitch memory.     

Stimulus aspects of aversive controls: long term effects of suppression procedures

Five years ago, pigeons trained to peck a key for food were periodically presented with a 1000 cps tone which ended with electrical shock. They were then tested for the stimulus generalization of conditioned suppression. After an interruption of 2.5 yr, another series of generalization tests showed no loss of suppression. The present study was conducted 1.5 yr later to retest the effect of an extended interruption on retention of suppression. It was found, again, that suppression did not decline over time. The present paper, which summarizes the earlier data and reports the most recent findings, provides an overview of the extended behavioral consequences of the original aversive procedures administered five years ago.     

Themes of Agency and Communion In Significant Autobiographical Scenes

ABSTRACT In three studies employing over 350 community adults and college students, participants wrote or told narratives of personally important scenes in their lives. The autobiographical accounts were coded for themes of agency and communion, the two general content dimensions in lives and life stories that have been identified by many theorists and researchers. The four agentic themes of self-mastery, status, achievement/responsibility, and empowerment were positively associated with Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) measures of achievement and power motivation, self-report scales of dominance and achievement, and personal strivings concerning being successful and feeling strong. Similarly, the four communal themes of love/friendship, dialogue, care/help, and community were positively associated with intimacy motivation, needs for affiliation and nurturance, and personal strivings concerned with warm and close relationships. The results suggest a thematic coherence in personality across the arenas of key autobiographical memories, social motives, and daily goals.     

A Comparison of Verbal Response Modes Used by Master's-Level Career Counselors and Other Helpers

The verbal response modes of 4 master's-level career counselors, each in middle sessions of career counseling with 2 adult clients, were categorized and compared with those of other types of helpers. Career counselors primarily used information, direct guidance, paraphrase, and closed question. In comparison with data presented in Hill, Thames, and Rardin (1979) Toro (1986) and Levy (1989) career counselors were most similar to Albert Ellis, mental health professionals, psychologists on radio talk shows, and family practice lawyers in that all frequently used information and direct guidance. They were most dissimilar to Carl Rogers, who used more paraphrase, interpretation, and confrontation.     

Test reliability and practice effects

The purpose of this paper is to develop mathematical formulations of test reliability when the estimation of reliability requires successive observations and these observations are not independent of the process (or act) of measurement. The specific application of concern arises in performance testing where performance varies as a function of practice and where practice accrues as a result of measurement. Repeated measures are experimentally nonindependent in such cases. Formulations for the estimation of reliability are developed for each of two cases. The first of these assumes a linear model for acquisition; the second assumes a nonlinear (quadratic) model. Consumers,physicians, and payors: A triad of conflicting interests

The dynamic changes in American health care are significiantly deeper than technological advancement alone. Consumers, physicians, and third party payors are all assuming new roles in the system. The balance of medical control is radically shifting. Unless the three parties come together in a mutual partnership, needed improvements will not occur and what is currently good in the system will be lost. The key to this important partnership is the consumer.
