A key theme from the previous commentaries is that the business case for developing supportive supervisors needs to be stronger for organizations to make the investments necessary to develop supportive supervisors. There are time constraints and other practical considerations for those in the role of supervisor that may get in the way of supportive supervision unless supervisor support is recognized as a valuable business expense (Ellinger, 2013; Zeni, MacDougall, Chauhan, Brock, & Buckley, 2013). As such, in our response to the commentaries, we present the findings of an additional analysis based on the data from our original sample that examine the relationship between supportive supervision (as rated by subordinates) and supervisor performance and promotability (as rated by the supervisor's boss). We provide evidence that highly supportive supervisors are seen as more promotable and as better performers than are supervisors who are less supportive. Having empirical evidence that shows that upper‐level leaders believe that supportive management contributes to the performance of supervisors is important because upper‐level leaders are the ones making decisions in organizations about what is valued and promoted. 相似文献

Two experiments evaluated skilled typists’ ability to report knowledge about the layout of keys on a standard keyboard. In
Experiment 1, subjects judged the relative direction of letters on the computer keyboard. One group of subjects was asked
to imagine the keyboard, one group was allowed to look at the keyboard, and one group was asked to type the letter pair before
judging relative direction. The imagine group had larger angular error and longer response time than both the look and touch
groups. In Experiment 2, subjects placed one key relative to another. Again, the imagine group had larger angular error, larger
distance error, and longer response time than the other groups. The two experiments suggest that skilled typists have poor
explicit knowledge of key locations. The results are interpreted in terms of a model with two hierarchical parts in the system

The mental scanning paradigm has demonstrated that the time taken to scan the mental visual image of a map is linearly related to the scanned distances. The experiments reported here aimed at exploring the influence of two factors on mental scanning: (1) the modality through which the environment is explored, that is visual locomotion; and (2) the size of the environment. Three groups of participants had to study three paths of different sizes: large, intermediate and small. After walking on the paths, participants had to mentally scan them. In Experiment 1 an effect of the absolute size was found, which was due to the participants who took longer and relied on a kinaesthetic strategy to study the path. Experiment 2 was a repetition of the first but the duration of the learning time was controlled. A significant difference between size conditions due to longer scanning times for the larger configuration was found. Experiment 3 compared two learning strategies: visual and kinaesthetic. Also in this case a significant size effect due to longer latencies for scanning over the larger configuration was found. In all experiments a significant effect of distance and the typical time–distance coefficients of mental scanning were also found. Results suggest that the learning time duration and the spatial kinaesthetic strategy are both important for encoding the actual size of the environment. 相似文献

Associations among perceptions of partner responses to disclosures about capitalization and support experiences and relationship satisfaction were examined over 1 year in 268 individuals in romantic relationships. Multilevel modeling indicated that capitalization and support perceptions covaried over 1 year, but they independently predicted contemporaneous relationship satisfaction and appeared to be compensatory processes. However, with increasing relationship duration, support perceptions became more strongly associated with relationship satisfaction, whereas capitalization perceptions became less strongly associated with relationship satisfaction, suggesting that capitalization perceptions may play less of a buffering role with time. Results suggested that perceiving partners as interested and enthusiastic in the face of triumph, and as caring and supportive in the face of difficulties, serve important and independent relationship maintenance functions. 相似文献

The present study examined whether the capture of spatial attention is driven by stimulus salience (e.g., object uniqueness) or by a match to current attentional control settings (contingent capture). We measured the N2pc effect, a component of the event-related brain potential thought to reflect lateralized attentional allocation. On every trial, a noninformative cue display containing a colour singleton box was followed by a target display of letters. Participants searched for a target letter in a specified colour (in Experiments 1–3) or within a specified shape (in Experiment 4) while ignoring other stimuli. The key manipulation was whether the singleton cue contained the target-defining feature (e.g., a specific colour). Experiment 1 revealed signs of attention capture—a cue validity effect and an N2pc effect—only for singleton cues that contained the target-defining feature. This pattern persisted even when we increased the salience of the singleton box (Experiments 2 and 3). Irrelevant colour singletons also failed to produce a significant N2pc effect when the target was defined based on shape rather than colour (Experiment 4). We conclude that attention capture is strongly contingent on top-down attentional control settings, not bottom-up stimulus salience. 相似文献

Perfectionistic concerns (i.e., negative reactions to failures, exaggerated concerns over others’ criticism and expectations, and nagging self-doubts) are linked to social disconnection and depressive symptoms. According to the perfectionism social disconnection model, perfectionistic concerns contribute to social disconnection (i.e., feeling rejected, excluded, and unwanted by others) which, subsequently, contributes to depressive symptoms. The social world is replete with chances for interpretations. In interpreting their social worlds, people high in perfectionistic concerns tend to perceive interpersonal discrepancies, a distressing form of social disconnection that involves perceptions of others as dissatisfied with them and as disapproving of them. These interpretations are also conceptualized as having depressing consequences for people high in perfectionistic concerns. This study tested whether perceived interpersonal discrepancies mediate the relation between perfectionistic concerns and depressive symptoms; 240 participants were recruited and this mediational model was tested with a four-wave, 4-week longitudinal design. Structural equation modeling with bootstrapped tests of mediation indicated the perfectionistic concerns-depressive symptoms relationship was mediated by interpersonal discrepancies (even after controlling for perfectionistic strivings). People high in perfectionistic concerns perceive others as dissatisfied with them and as disapproving of them. Dental students estimated the pain distress and discomfort of their patients after patients received a Class II restoration (simple filing). Dentist's estimates of patient pain accounted for 36% of the variance in patient self-report responses. Dentist accuracy was significantly lower, however, for estimates of anxiety and distress. Dentist accuracy was unaffected by patient's degree of self-monitoring. There was a tendency for female dentists to demonstrate greater accuracy than male dentists, but this effect was nonsignificant. In addition, dentists' accuracy in assessing overall patient discomfort was significantly lower in that segment of the treatment procedure that was most stressful for the dentists. Subjects who make repetitive saccadic eye movements before a memory test subsequently exhibit superior retrieval in comparison
with subjects who do not move their eyes. It has been proposed that eye movements enhance retrieval by increasing interaction
of the left and right cerebral hemispheres. To test this, we compared the effect of eye movements on subsequent recall (Experiment
1) and recognition (Experiment 2) in two groups thought to differ in baseline degree of hemispheric interaction—individuals
who are strongly right-handed (SR) and individuals who are not (nSR). For SR subjects, who naturally may experience less hemispheric
interaction than nSR subjects, eye movements enhanced retrieval. In contrast, depending on the measure, eye movements were
either inconsequential or even detrimental for nSR subjects. These results partially support the hemispheric interaction account,
but demand an amendment to explain the harmful effects of eye movements for nSR individuals. 相似文献
