In choice reaction time (RT) tasks, college students verified the truth of displays expressing spatial relations between two objects. The relations werelocational (A is left of B) ororientational (A and B are horizontal). The objects were names of states in the United States, symbols, or letter arrays. The objects were memorized prior to the display (states and letters) or were presented as part of the display (symbols and letters). In the location tasks with both states and symbols, locatives were spatial (right, left, above, below) or compass (north, south, east, west). Distance between states was also varied. When location was judged, horizontally aligned stimuli resulted in slower responses than vertically aligned stimuli, independently of materials and locative set. Reaction time was inversely related to distance. When orientation was judged, responses to horizontal pairs of states were slower than responses to vertical pairs of states, responses to horizontal pairs of letters were faster than responses to vertical pairs, and RT did not depend upon the orientation of symbols. This pattern of results suggests that orientational judgments are influenced by type of materials and the entext to which the material has been encoded (i.e., memorized). Locational judgments reflect a potent source of difficulty not present in orientation tasks, namely, telling left from right. Alternative explanations of the right-left effect are discussed. 相似文献

In two experiments, tape-recorded strings of seven recall digits were preceded by a redundant stimulus prefix containing either one or three digits. The prefix and recall digits (1) were articulatorily continuous, or (2)were made discontinuous by tape-splicing, or (3)were made discontinuous by deliberately spoken prosodic contour. Subjects were instructed to ignore the redundant prefixes and report only the recall digits. The main results were: (1)Compared to strings preceded by no prefix, all prefix conditions reduced recall. (2)Three-digit prefixes reduced recall less than one-digit prefixes. (3) In most cases, spliced prefixes reduced recall less than intact prefixes. In a report paradigm, two letters are presented on a trial which are either confusable(e.g., P and R) or nonconfusable (e.g., P and M) in terms of visual features. Across trials, interletter distance, retinal location, duration, and visual field are varied. Identification accuracy on confusable trials was generally lower than on nonconfusable trials, and this effect of level of confusability increased with distance from the fixation point, decreased with duration, and was smaller on the central letter than on the more peripheral letter. A quantitative model, incorporating aspects of the interactive channels model (Estes, 1972) and feature perturbation model (Wolford, 1975), is developed and tested. One parameter of the model measures the effective similarity between two letters after lateral inhibition has occurred, and other parameters measure the probability of feature perturbation in foveal and peripheral directions. 相似文献

The present experiments were concerned with subsyllabic units in word recognition. The studies employed a same-different RT task. A one-syllable word and a probe were presented simultaneously, and subjects responded “same” if the probe was an integral subset of the word (BLAST:BL), and “different” otherwise (BLAST:BC). Probes included single letters (BLAST:L), doublets (BLAST:LA), triplets (BLAST:LAS), and the whole word (BLAST: BLAST). The first experiment suggested that a variety of spelling patterns, as well as the whole word, served as units of processing. In particular, initial consonant clusters were processed as quickly as single letters, and only slightly faster than the whole words. Consonant strings were used in the second experiment, which demonstrated spelling pattern effects with permissible strings (BLGST:BL) as compared to nonpermissable strings (BXJPK:BX). Stimulus competition was studied in college students' correlational judgments in a medical decision-making setting. In accord with prior findings, subjects making cause-to-effect (predictive) judgments discounted a stimulus event that was moderately correlated with a target event when rival stimuli were more highly correlated with the effect. However, subjects making effect-to-cause (diagnostic) judgments were not at all disposed to discount a stimulus event which was moderately correlated with a target event when rival stimuli were more highly correlated with the cause. The theoretical implications of these results are considered in connection with associative and mentalistic models of causal attribution. 相似文献

The role of adults' social cognitions in mediating judgments of hyperactive children's medicationrelated behavior change was explored. Two hundred eightyeight undergraduates observed two videotaped excerpts of a hyperactive target boy playing a group game with two peers. Each target was taking either methylphenidate (0.6 mg/kg) during both excerpts, placebo during both excerpts, methylphenidate first followed by placebo, or placebo first followed by methylphenidate. Adults' cumulative social evaluations of the child were assessed after they viewed both video segments. Results indicated that observers combined their perceptions of the two behavior samples into composite impressions using an equalweight averaging algorithm. Even for children whose behavior improved, adults' ratings of undercontrolled behaviors continued to meet or, in some cases exceed, research cutoff scores used to identify hyperactive children. The findings suggest that the actual behaviors of children with attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) play a more influential role in shaping interpersonal impressions than do perceiver socialcognitive processes such as primacy, recency, or integration biases.This project was supported in part by a UC Regents' Dissertation fellowship to Douglas A. In this study the authors examined relationships between trainees' cognitive style, program membership, amount of practicum experience, and needs and expectations for supervision. Participants were 57 trainees in three graduate programs at a midwestern university. All respondents completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI; Myers & McCaulley, 1985), the trainee version of the Supervisor Perception Form (SPF-T; Heppner & Roehlke, 1984), and the Supervisory Needs subtest of the Counselor Development Questionnaire (CDQ-SN; Reising & Daniels, 1983). Results suggested that trainees' expectations and needs regarding the supervisory experience differed by amount of practicum experience, cognitive style, and program membership. Explanations for the rise in demand for counselling are discussed. These include dissatisfaction with clinical psychology, the loss of social and personal supports, New Age aspirations for personal development, and insuficient numbers of clinical psychologists. Evidence is presented against the views that there has been a recent loss of social or personal supports, and that personal-development aspirations through unorthodox routes are a new phenomenon. The apparent rise in demand for counselling is explained rather as a rise in demand for counselling training, by would-be practitioners. This demand in turn is fuelled by developments in public-sector employent, leading employees to seek extra qualifications to enhance their job security. Nevertheless, the relatively weak appeal of clinical psychology, together with its low public visibility and its weak licensing power, encourage the continual emergence of alternative therapies. 相似文献
