Schizophrenia patients have difficulty processing nonliteral forms of discourse such as idiomatic expressions. We hypothesized that schizophrenia patients would show impaired idiom processing for literally plausible idioms (e.g., kick the bucket) but not for literally implausible idioms (e.g., be on cloud nine). Thirty-two patients and 36 controls listened to sentences containing literally plausible and implausible idioms and made lexical decisions about idiom-related or literal-related targets. Schizophrenia patients showed reduced priming for literally plausible idioms but intact priming for literally implausible idioms compared with controls. Both groups showed evidence of literal word priming. These results are consistent with the notion that schizophrenia patients make normal use of context under conditions that minimize the need for controlled processing.  相似文献

It is now widely recognized that children, adolescents, and adults with mental retardation are especially vulnerable to sexual abuse. Because at least 10% of genetic conditions are reported to include mental retardation as a feature, the provision of services to individuals with mental retardation represents a substantial portion of the case load for many genetic counselors. Our objective is to educate genetic counselors and other health professionals about this vulnerable population in order to enhance the frequency and efficacy of inquiry into sexual education and sexual abuse prevention training for patients with mental retardation. The following review article is intended to assist genetic counselors by increasing their knowledge of factors that lead to sexual abuse and provides recommendations for integrating this information into the counseling interaction.  相似文献

Too much contemporary bioethical discourse is weak on science, lazily citing and adopting science fiction scenarios rather than science facts in the framing of analyses and policies. We challenge bioethicists to take more seriously the role of providing informed insight into and oversight over contemporary science and its implications and applications. Bioethicists must work harder to understand the fast-changing truths and limits of basic science, and they must incorporate only appropriate and authentic science into their discourse, just as they did in the past when addressing the quandaries of clinical medicine. The field of bioethics is not so old and entrenched that its future is assured. Bioethicists must make themselves useful to society in order to deserve and retain the public's trust. They can best do this by ensuring that decision making and public policy are grounded in facts, not fictions and fantasies.  相似文献

An exploration of the regression concept historically and conceptually reveals that its familiarity and frequent use have resulted in decreasing conceptual clarity and precision. Rooted in an outmoded fixation-regression model of development and psychopathology, the concept has become concretized. This paper is a beginning exploration of problematic aspects of the concept of regression, with emphasis on potentially detrimental consequences for psychoanalytic technique that derive from its unexamined use. Behavioral and neurobiological evidence shows that primacy and recency are subserved by memory systems for intermediate- and short-term memory, respectively. A widely accepted explanation of recency is that in short-term memory, new learning overwrites old learning. Primacy is not as well understood, but many hypotheses contend that initial items are better encoded into long-term memory because they have had more opportunity to be rehearsed. A simple, biologically motivated neural network model supports an alternative hypothesis of the distinct processing requirements for primacy and recency given single-trial learning without rehearsal. Simulations of the model exhibit either primacy or recency, but not both simultaneously. The incompatibility of primacy and recency clarifies possible reasons for two neurologically distinct systems. Inhibition, and its control of activity, determines those list items that are acquired and retained. Activity levels that are too low do not provide sufficient connections for learning to occur, while higher activity diminishes capacity. High recurrent inhibition, and progressively diminishing activity, allows acquisition and retention of early items, while later items are never acquired. Conversely, low recurrent inhibition, and the resulting high activity, allows continuous acquisition such that acquisition of later items eventually interferes with the retention of early items.  相似文献

In a recent study, rats with hippocampal lesions performed as well as did unoperated rats on an olfactory memory span task, performing ~80% correct even when the span length reached 24 odors. This finding seems potentially at odds with demonstrations that memory-impaired patients typically fail tasks in which large amounts of information must be retained. Accordingly, we have assessed recognition memory span performance for line drawings of objects, designs, and odors in amnesic patients with damage thought to be limited to the hippocampal region. The patients were impaired on all three tasks. We consider possible explanations for the difference between the findings for humans and rats, including the fact that olfactory function is particularly well-developed in rodents.  相似文献
