Two experiments were conducted in an effort to combine a mnemonic strategy for remembering individual items with a mnemonic procedure for remembering, and reasoning about, inter‐item relationships. In Experiment 1, students using the combined mnemonic approach were able to identify more individual items (fish names from their pictures) and were subsequently able to remember more components of six studied hierarchies (order, family, and species names of the fish) than did students in an ‘own best method’ control condition. Additionally, and importantly, mnemonic students outperformed control students on an analogy task requiring inferences about superordinate, subordinate, and coordinate relationships. In Experiment 2, the initial number of to‐be‐learned fish was reduced so that the performance of both mnemonic and control students was comparable with respect to fish identification. Despite such item‐level comparability, an advantage for mnemonically instructed students was observed on both immediate and two‐day‐delayed hierarchy tests. We suggest that by cementing lower‐order connections, mnemonic strategies facilitate students' learning of higher‐order information. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Philosophers have traditionally held that claims about necessities and possibilities are to be evaluated by consulting our philosophical intuitions; that is, those peculiarly compelling deliverances about possibilities that arise from a serious and reflective attempt to conceive of counterexamples to these claims. But many contemporary philosophers, particularly naturalists, argue that intuitions of this sort are unreliable, citing examples of once-intuitive, but now abandoned, philosophical theses, as well as recent psychological studies that seem to establish the general fallibility of intuition. In the first two sections of this paper, I evaluate these arguments, and also the counter-arguments of contemporary defenders of tradition. In the next two sections, I sketch an alternative account of the role of philosophical intuitions that incorporates elements of traditionalism and naturalism - and defend it against other such views. In the final section, however, I discuss intuitions about conscious experience, and acknowledge that my view may not extend comfortably to this case. This may seem unfortunate, since so much contemporary discussion of the epistemology of modality seems motivated by worries about the mind-body problem, and informed by the position one wishes to endorse. But, as I argue, if conscious experience is indeed an exception to the view I suggest in this paper, it is an exception that proves - and can illuminate - the rule. 相似文献

Recent studies suggest the involvement of episodic memory in value-based decisions as a source of information about subjective values of choice options. We therefore tested the link between age-related memory decline and inconsistencies in value-based decisions in 30 cognitively healthy older adults. Within the pre-registered experiment, the inconsistencies were measured in two ways: i) the consistency between stated preferences and revealed choices; ii) the amount of intransitivities in choice triplets, revealed in a forced paired choice task including all possible pairings of 20 food products. Although no significant association of memory functions to number of intransitive triplets was observed, participants with lower memory scores were more likely to choose the item for which they stated a lower preference. The results suggest a higher noise in the underlying preference signal in participants with lower memory. We discuss the results in the context of the unique needs of elderly consumers. 相似文献

Over the past couple of decades, research on religion and health has grown into a thriving field. Misperceptions about the history and scope of this field, however, continue to exist, especially among new investigators and commentators on this research. Contrary to the tacit narrative, published research and writing date to the nineteenth century, programmatic research to the 1950s, and NIH funding to 1990; elite medical journals have embraced this topic for over 100 years; study populations are religiously and sociodemographically diverse; and published findings are mostly positive, consistent with psychosocial theories of health and confirmed by comprehensive reviews and expert panels. 相似文献

The evolution of joint dynamics and muscle patterning in the shoulder and elbow was studied for cyclical line drawing tasks at different frequencies, amplitudes, and orientations in the horizontal plane. Three main modes of control were identified: elbow-centered, shoulder-centered, and elbow-shoulder, each referring to the principal joints or joint combinations that were used to achieve the behavioral goals. The contribution of the shoulder joint was most prominent across the majority of movement orientations and largely paralleled changes in the dynamic (inertial) forces in the end effector (shoulder-centered control). The two joints either exchanged roles during the performance of the right diagonal movement (elbow-centered control) or shifted from a single-joint strategy to a dual-joint strategy during the performance of large amplitudes with low or medium cycling frequencies (shoulder-elbow control). These behavioral results support the existence of a modular control mode that allows the central nervous system to effectively tune motor commands to meet a broad variety of orientations, amplitudes, and frequencies. This refers to the emergence of a context-dependent control mode for the shoulder and elbow that optimizes the implementation of the underlying motor goals under a rich combination of spatial and temporal manipulations. 相似文献

Molyneux's Question, that is, “Suppose a man born blind, and now adult, and taught by his touch to distinguish between a cube
and a sphere... and the blind man made to see: Quaere, whether by his sight, before he touched them, he could now distinguish,
and tell, which is the globe, which the cube”, was discussed by many theorists in the 17th and 18th centuries, and has recently
been addressed by contemporary philosophers interested in the nature, and identity conditions, of perceptual concepts. My
main concern in this paper is to argue – against Evans, Campbell, and a number of other contemporary philosophers – that a
test of the sort Molyneux envisioned, at least if carefully designed and administered, can indeed be a crucial experiment
for the claim that we deploy the same perceptual concepts when identifying shapes by sight and by touch. I will explore some
implications of this argument for a theory of recognitional concepts. And I’ll try to trace out some unhappy consequences

Rats were tested for choice accuracy in an eight-arm radial maze during and after chronic administration of nicotine via subcutaneously implanted glass and Silastic capsules. Nicotine administration significantly improved choice accuracy relative to controls. The effect gradually became apparent over the first 2 weeks of exposure and persisted through the third week. Surprisingly, the significant facilitation of the nicotine-treated rats relative to controls continued for 2 weeks after the end of nicotine administration. No effects of nicotine were seen on choice latency or the strategy to make adjacent arm entries. 相似文献
