Correlates of a Taoist orientation

Using rating scales no associations were found between having a Taoist orientation to life, death anxiety, and the perception that one's self is unified (versus fragmented) in a sample of southeastern Asian students (18 women and 12 men).     

A paper-and-pencil measure of prefrontal subcortical dysfunction

In a large sample of 722 community residents, scores on the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale were significantly associated with age, sex, and education, indicating that scores were higher for men, younger participants, and less educated participants.     

"Self-execution" and state execution

In the United States from 1977 to 1999, the suicide rate of death row inmates was not associated with their probability of execution (r = -.25).     

Anxiety in Kuwaiti and American college students

Samples of Kuwaiti (n=646) and American (n=320) undergraduates responded to the Kuwait University Anxiety Scale in Arabic and English, respectively. Differences by sex were significant, with women having a higher mean anxiety score than men and by country with Kuwaiti women having a higher anxiety score than American women.     

Perfectionism, depression, and academic performance

In samples of 30 Canadian and 117 American undergraduates, academic performance was more strongly correlated with perfectionism scores (Revised Almost Perfect Scale) (r = .20 and -.17) than with those on self-reported depression (CES-Depression) (r = -.09).     

Sex differences in reasons for living

An analysis of responses by 837 Italian undergraduate students to the Reasons For Living Inventory indicated women scored higher but less consistently than in previous research on American undergraduates.     

Individualism and suicide

In a sample of 19 nations, suicide rates were not associated with nations' estimates of work locus of control, job satisfaction, psychological well-being, physical well-being, or individualism.     

Apparent combined length of two-line and four-line sets

Recent studies, using single-line stimuli, show apparent length to be a power function, with exponent 1.0, of objective or physical length. If apparent lengths are additive, then, given the 1.0 exponent, two lines should appear to S to have the same total length as the single line they would form if physically joined. When S adjusted the length of one line to match the combined length of two other lines, however, he generally made the variable line much longer than the actual combined length of the two lines. Dividing the total length equally between the two lines, so that each had 50%, represents the greatest departure from a single line, yet the largest overestimation occurred when one of the two lines had 65% to 75% of the total length. The overestimation was greater when the lines were spaced farther apart, suggesting that the amount of area occupied by the lines affected apparent combined length.
