Kuhn and the science of religion

Ever since the challenge to the ‘received’ view of the philosophy of science—a view epitomized by Karl Popper and Carl Hempel—the status of science has been questioned. If radical critics of the received view—critics including Kuhn, Laudan, Feyerabend, the Edinburgh Strong Programme, and Latour—are right, can science, which means natural science, still be considered objective? Can it still be deemed the model of objectivity to be emulated by the social sciences and even by the humanities? Because religious studies is commonly assumed to fall short of the standards of objectivity of the natural sciences and even of the social sciences, what bearing does criticism of conventional philosophy of science have on it? Specifically, can the religionist approach to religion, the approach that purports to be the sole appropriate one for religious studies, be defended? Does radical philosophy of science, by challenging the objectivity of scientific claims, make the world safe for religious ones? This article will focus on the philosophy of Thomas Kuhn and will seek to determine what use defenders of religious studies can make of it.     

Cognitive and life stress predictors of relapse in remitted unipolar depressed patients: test of the congruency hypothesis.

Remitted depressed subjects (N = 59) were followed longitudinally to determine whether dependent or self-critical persons are more vulnerable to relapse after exposure to life events that have a bearing on interpersonal or achievement concerns. Regression analyses indicated that congruency effects, as measured by the occurrence of achievement-related adversity in the lives of self-critical subjects, accounted for a significant increment in relapse variance over each variable entered singly. When data from the 2 months just before relapse were analyzed, some evidence of congruency effects in dependent subjects experiencing interpersonal-related adversity was obtained. These findings highlight the dimensional qualities of life even impact and call for greater differentiation in modeling the activation of a diathesis and precipitation of depression after life stress.     

Early infantile development as reflected in the psychoanalytical process: steps in integration

The contention of this paper is that early infantile development is reflected in the infantile part of the transference. When it is well integrated it gives rise to an underlying non-verbal communication which gives a depth to other communications. When not integrated it gives rise to acting in as a primitive mode of communication. When this is understood the primitive experience can be integrated, symbolized and partly at least verbalized. The development of the infantile part can be followed in the fluctuating moves towards integration. Two examples are given. In one case I show how many analytical understanding leads to the integration of a split off primitive pre-verbal experience and the connexion of such integration with the development of speech. I also show how a failure of understanding on the analyst's part, repeating a developmental failure can affect this process adversely. In the second case I show integrative processes connected with weaning and the integration of the weaning process with genital sexuality.     

VICTOR TURNERS THEORY OF RITUAL

Abstract. Like Clifford Geertz and Mary Douglas, Victor Turner considers religion the key to culture and ritual the key to religion. Like them as well, he interprets religion the way believers purportedly do: as beliefs, as beliefs about the cosmos, yet as cosmic beliefs compatible with modern science. Ritual serves to express those cosmic beliefs–not for the scientific purpose of explaining or controlling the cosmos but for the existential purpose of giving human beings a place in it. Ritual serves simultaneously to express beliefs about society–not only for the functionalist purpose of keeping human beings in their social place but also for the existential purpose of giving them a social place.     

Exteroceptive control of fixed-interval responding

Two pigeons were exposed to several fixed-interval schedules of food reinforcement. In some cases, exteroceptive stimuli associated with the passage of time were present. Such visual "clock" stimuli were found to gain almost complete control over the behavior, although at the longest fixed interval studied, the superposition of a new temporal discrimination upon the visual discrimination was observed. Where clock stimuli were made contingent upon the birds' behavior, a new form of responding was generated. This behavior was discussed in terms of positive and negative response-tendencies resulting from several stimulus factors: Some of these functioned as S(Delta)'s and secondary negative reinforcers; some functioned as S(D)'s and secondary positive reinforcers; and some were ambiguous with respect to reinforcement conditions. A "pure temporal" discrimination was superimposed upon these factors, but its exact nature was indeterminate from the present data.     

The concept of citizenship and attitudes toward women in combat

Since the American and French revolutions, the right to bear arms has been an integral aspect of the normative definition of citizenship. Citizenship rights were won by people who were given the opportunity to prove their loyalty through the defense of the state. This right has been denied women who, although they have served in the United States armed forces in relatively low numbers, have been systematically excluded from combat specialties. Attitude data collected from both Army and civilian samples show public opinion to be opposed to women in combat. Women in the Army are less opposed than are men, political liberals less than political conservatives, and respondents with no religious affiliation less than those with church ties. In no group, however, is there majority support for extending the right to fight to women.An earlier version of this paper was presented at the Fifth Symposium on Psychology in the Air Force, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado, April 8–10, 1976.     

The behavioral effects of depletions of brain serotonin induced by 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine vary with time after administration

Ether-anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats were depleted of brain serotonin (5HT) by intraventricular injections of 50 micrograms 5,7-dihydroxtryptamine (57DHT). Oral pretreatment with 25 mg/kg desmethylimipramine was used to protect brain noradrenergic neurons from 57DHT. Liquid chromatographic assays revealed that this treatment did not significantly alter catecholamine levels but depleted hippocampal 5HT by 92% and striatal 5HT by 45%. Three or eleven days after lesioning, locomotor and exploratory behavior was characterized in separate groups of animals with a behavioral pattern monitor (BPM). On Days 4 and 12, the animals were retested following saline or 1.0 mg/kg amphetamine. Three days after depletion, lesioned rats exhibited a decrease rate of habituation of locomotor activity relative to controls. When challenged with amphetamine (1.0 mg/kg), 5HT-depleted rats exhibited increased corner and decreased center activity, as well as stereotyped patterns of locomotion. Eleven days following lesion, 5HT-depleted rats exhibited habituation rates greater than controls; amphetamine challenge yielded patterns of activity similar to those of control animals. These results show that central serotonergic pathways play an important role in modulating both spontaneous and amphetamine-elicited activity in rats, and that compensatory mechanisms operate over time to alter the behavioral effects of 57DHT-induced depletions of brain 5HT.
