The present study investigated whether pain expectancies cause pain in chronic low back patients. Back patients (N = 29) were requested to perform four exercise bouts (two with each leg), each consisting of flexing and extending the knee three times at maximal force (Cybex 350 System). During each exercise bout the baseline pain, the expected pain and experienced pain were recorded. Patients also reported their experienced fear of further injury to the back. Furthermore, the peak force of both knee flexors and extensors was assessed. Although patients did expect a back pain increase during the first exercise bout with each leg, no evidence was found for the thesis that pain expectancies generate increases in subjective pain experiences. Instead, the reported pain expectancy was readily corrected during the next exercise bout, whereas the experienced pain remained unchanged. Furthermore, a high pain expectancy co-occurred with (1) a marginally significant fear of (re)injury, and (2) a significant lower peak torque of the knee flexors. These results are consistent with conditioning models which state that pain expectations are associated with a fear response and an urge to avoid the pain. 相似文献

The present study examines the concept of illness identity, the degree to which a chronic illness is integrated into one’s identity, in adults with a chronic illness by validating a new self-report questionnaire, the Illness Identity Questionnaire (IIQ). Self-report questionnaires on illness identity, psychological, and physical functioning were assessed in two samples: adults with congenital heart disease (22–78 year old; n?=?276) and with multisystem connective tissue disorders (systemic lupus erythematosus or systemic sclerosis; 17–81 year old; n?=?241). The IIQ could differentiate four illness identity states (i.e., engulfment, rejection, acceptance, and enrichment) in both samples, based on exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. All four subscales proved to be reliable. Rejection and engulfment were related to maladaptive psychological and physical functioning, whereas acceptance and enrichment were related to adaptive psychological and physical functioning. The present findings underscore the importance of the concept of illness identity. The IIQ, a self-report questionnaire, is introduced to measure four different illness identity states in adults with a chronic illness. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether brain activity related to the presence of stuttering can be identified with rapid functional MRI (fMRI) sequences that involved overt and covert speech processing tasks. The long-term goal is to develop sensitive fMRI approaches with developmentally appropriate tasks to identify deviant speech motor and auditory brain activity in children who stutter closer to the age at which recovery from stuttering is documented. Rapid sequences may be preferred for individuals or populations who do not tolerate long scanning sessions. In this report, we document the application of a picture naming and phoneme monitoring task in 3 min fMRI sequences with adults who stutter (AWS). If relevant brain differences are found in AWS with these approaches that conform to previous reports, then these approaches can be extended to younger populations. Pairwise contrasts of brain BOLD activity between AWS and normally fluent adults indicated the AWS showed higher BOLD activity in the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), right temporal lobe and sensorimotor cortices during picture naming and higher activity in the right IFG during phoneme monitoring. The right lateralized pattern of BOLD activity together with higher activity in sensorimotor cortices is consistent with previous reports, which indicates rapid fMRI sequences can be considered for investigating stuttering in younger participants.Educational objectives: The reader will learn about and be able to describe the: (1) use of functional MRI to study persistent developmental stuttering; (2) differences in brain activation between persons who stutter and normally fluent speakers; and (3) potential benefit of time efficient fMRI sequences combined with a range of speech processing tasks for investigating stuttering in younger populations. 相似文献

Instances of explanatory reduction are often advocated on metaphysical grounds; given that the only real things in the world
are subatomic particles and their interaction, we have to try to explain everything in terms of the laws of physics. In this
paper, we show that explanatory reduction cannot be defended on metaphysical grounds. Nevertheless, indispensability arguments
for reductive explanations can be developed, taking into account actual scientific practice and the role of epistemic interests.
Reductive explanations might be indispensable to address some epistemic interest answering a specific explanation-seeking
question in the most accurate, adequate and efficient way. Just like explanatory pluralists often advocate the indispensability
of higher levels of explanation pointing at the pragmatic value of the explanatory information obtained on these higher levels,
we argue that explanatory reduction—traditionally understood as the contender of pluralism—can be defended in a similar way.
The pragmatic value reductionist, lower level explanations might have in the biomedical sciences and the social sciences is

Earlier factor analytical studies on the empirical validity of the DSM-IV-TR (American Psychological Association, 2000) Axis II classification have offered little support for the current three-cluster structure. In his large-scale meta-analysis of previously published personality disorder correlation matrices, O'Connor (2005) found four factors, corresponding to the neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness domains of the five-factor model of personality. In the present study, this dimensional four-factor model and the categorical DSM three-cluster structure were fitted to the Assessment of DSM-IV Personality Disorders questionnaire (ADP-IV; Schotte & De Doncker, 1994) scale scores using structural equation modelling. The results strongly favored the dimensional model, which also resembled other well-founded four-factor proposals (Livesley, Jang, & Vernon, 1998; Widiger & Simonsen, 2005). Moreover, a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis showed that this model was highly invariant and thus generalizable across two large clinical (n = 1,029) and general population (n = 659) samples. 相似文献

ObjectivesThe behaviors physical education (PE) teachers engage in affect a number of important student outcomes. Therefore, it is essential to study the antecedents of these teaching behaviors.Design and methodGrounded in Self-Determination Theory, this cross-sectional study explored the relations between PE teachers' autonomous and controlled motivational orientations and a variety of observed need-supportive and need-thwarting teaching behaviors in 79 PE classes by means of regression analyses.ResultsControl-oriented teachers made less use of an overall need-supportive teaching style and provided less structure during the activity in particular, while they engaged in more need-thwarting teaching behavior in general and in more controlling and cold teaching behavior in particular.ConclusionAlthough autonomy-oriented teachers tended to display the opposite pattern of correlates, these associations were non-significant. As the current findings suggest that teachers' actual teaching behavior is rooted at least partly in their own dispositional motivational orientation, they may inform the design of effective continuous professional development programs and interventions aimed at enhancing teachers' need-supportive teaching.
