Our reduced ability to correctly report two sequentially presented targets is seen in the robust effect known as the attentional
blink (AB; Raymond, Shapiro, & Arnell, 1992). One recent report (Olivers & Nieuwenhuis, 2005) strikingly reveals the AB to
be virtually abolished when non-task-demanding music occurs in the background. The authors suggest that a diffuse attentional
state is the mediating factor. Here, we seek to broaden the finding’s generality by determining if task-irrelevant visual
motion and flicker also attenuate the AB. In our experiments, the AB task was presented together with a background field of
moving dots that could moveaway from ortoward the central AB task, or flicker. In the control condition, the dots remained static. The AB was attenuated—though to different
degrees—in all experimental conditions, but not in the static condition. Our findings add to the generality of the previous
conclusions, and we emphasize an account based on the overallocation of attention. 相似文献

Optimal Bayesian reasoning performance has reportedly been elusive, and a variety of explanations have been suggested for this situation. In a series of experiments, it is demonstrated that these difficulties with replication can be accounted for by differences in participant-sampling methodologies. Specifically, the best performances are obtained with students from top-tier, national universities who were paid for their participation. Performance drops significantly as these conditions are altered regarding inducements (e.g., using unpaid participants) or participant source (e.g., using participants from a second-tier, regional university). Honours-programme undergraduates do better than regular undergraduates within the same university, paid participation creates superior performance, and top-tier university students do better than students from lower ranked universities. Pictorial representations (supplementing problem text) usually have a slight facilitative effect across these participant manipulations. These results indicate that studies should take account of these methodological details and focus more on relative levels of performance rather than absolute performance. 相似文献

This paper details efforts by the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis
(IUPUI) to create a single instrument for honors science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students wishing
to demonstrate competence in the IUPUI Principles of Undergraduate Learning (PUL’s) and Accreditation Board for Engineering
and Technology (ABET) Engineering Accreditation Criterion (EAC) and Technology Accreditation Criterion (TAC) 2, a through
k. Honors courses in Human Behavior, Ethical Decision-Making, Applied Leadership, International Issues and Leadership Theories
and Processes were created along with a specific menu of activities and an assessment rubric based on PUL’s and ABET criteria
to evaluate student performance in the aforementioned courses. Students who complete the series of 18 Honors Credit hours
are eligible for an Honors Certificate in Leadership Studies from the Department of Organizational Leadership and Supervision.
Finally, an accounting of how various university assessment criteria, in this case the IUPUI Principles of Undergraduate Learning,
can be linked to ABET outcomes and prove student competence in both, using the aforementioned courses, menu of items, and
assessment rubrics; these will be analyzed and discussed.

Though covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, job candidates with a record of a disability may be adversely evaluated. Two experiments demonstrate that subtle knowledge of a prior disability creates a bias that can be removed by a structured interview. A job candidate was labeled as having once suffered from depression, substance abuse, cancer, or no disability. The candidate who once suffered from depression or substance abuse was judged more negatively than a control candidate, while a cancer survivor was not. Though disabilities are not perceived equally, benchmarked rating scales can enhance attention to relevant behaviors, thus controlling the potential for bias.We thank Steven Gregson, Michael Records and Cynthia Strickland for their help with pilot studies. Following adaptation to a rectangular grating, subjects observed a shift in the perceived duty cycle of a test grating (Burton, Nagshineh, & Ruddock, 1977; DeValois, 1977). This suggests that size information about black and white pattern components may be analyzed independently. We have tested this hypothesis by combining adaptation to a 2-cpd rectangular wave grating (narrow white bars and wide black bars or vice versa) with adaptation to a 4-cpd sine wave (narrow white and black bars. The data do not support the independent analysis of white and black components, but they may be accounted for by mechanisms sensitive to the relative phase relations among the spatial frequency components of the input. 相似文献

The effects of large neighborhoods (neighborhood size) and of higher frequency neighbors (neighborhood frequency) were examined as a function of nonword neighborhood size in lexical decision tasks. According to the multiple read-out model (J. Grainger & A. M. Jacobs, 1996), neighborhood size and neighborhood frequency effects should vary systematically as a function of nonword neighborhood size. In these experiments, the nonword context was more extensively manipulated than in previous studies, providing a more complete test of the model's predictions. In addition, simulations were conducted examining the model's ability to account for the facilitatory neighborhood size and neighborhood frequency effects observed in these experiments. Cultural influences in the experience and expression of emotions have been widely recognized, although systematic studies
of emotion-related beliefs in culturally diverse families have been scarce. The purpose of the present exploratory study was
to examine beliefs about anger among a group of adolescent male offenders in India temporarily residing in a pre-sentencing
institution. In particular, adolescent offenders (n = 14) were individually interviewed about their beliefs concerning causes and concomitants of, and behavioral responses to,
one’s own and others’ anger, as well as family patterns of anger expression that are crucial in understanding socialization
processes. Although some of the themes reflected in their narratives parallel the beliefs of educated, middle-class, non-offender
youth in India (e.g., social inappropriateness of anger), as well as those of offenders in other parts of the world (e.g.,
aggressive behavior as a common response to anger), beliefs about various aspects of anger specific to this subculture of
offender youth also emerged. In particular, perceived violations of family honor were cited as the most common elicitors of
anger, and although anger was considered ‘bad’ it was expressed through aggression. The findings of this study highlight the
need to develop a culturally informed theory of emotions, and relatedly, to develop culturally sensitive interventions for
anger management that can be incorporated as a part of rehabilitation efforts for offender youth in India. 相似文献

It has been suggested that effort invested in a task may be moderated by the perception of the nature of reward offered, e.g., whether social or financial in nature. If levels of payment for empirical work meaningfully influence the effort invested in tasks by participants, the implications may be serious and wide-ranging for the reliability and validity of published data. The study reported in this paper, examines this thesis in a driving context. Thirty-six participants were allocated to either a No payment, Low payment or Medium payment condition in a driving simulator. They undertook both easy and difficult driving scenarios in which performance was measured. Subjective workload and performance results indicated that task difficulty was successfully manipulated with the study. However, in contrast to the previous research in non-driving contexts, participants not receiving rewards were found to perform more poorly and experience increased time pressure. 相似文献
