Towards a functional analysis of delinquent behaviour: A pilot study

The events surrounding the delinquent behaviour of 21 juvenile offenders were examined in terms of the antecedents and consequences of these behaviours and with reference to the functional value of the behaviour to the individual. The results are analysed using reversal theory and the importance of the motivational state of the offender at the time the crime is carried out is stressed.     

Measuring violence on television

Television violence has been measured in numerous studies. However the amounts reported vary considerably depending on the definitions provided of violence and the sampling periods adopted. Studies that have followed the methodology of Gerbner are more easily compared and point to rates of around 5-6 violents acts per hour on prime time television in most countries. The rate of violence on British television is considerably lower than this and evidence points to a recent decline. However, traditional content analyses are limited and provide little understanding of television as a narrative art.     

Brief systemic work in psychiatric settings where a family member has been diagnosed as schizophrenic

In this paper I discuss work with the families of patients diagnosed as schizophrenic. The focus is on two particular aspects of such work: special features of therapy with these families and the important preparatory contextual work that needs to be done with colleagues in the professional network.
