The representation of body orientation and configuration is dependent on multiple sources of afferent and efferent information about ongoing and intended patterns of movement and posture. Under normal terrestrial conditions, we feel virtually weightless and we do not perceive the actual forces associated with movement and support of our body. It is during exposure to unusual forces and patterns of sensory feedback during locomotion that computations and mechanisms underlying the ongoing calibration of our body dimensions and movements are revealed. This review discusses the normal mechanisms of our position sense and calibration of our kinaesthetic, visual and auditory sensory systems, and then explores the adaptations that take place to transient Coriolis forces generated during passive body rotation. The latter are very rapid adaptations that allow body movements to become accurate again, even in the absence of visual feedback. Muscle spindle activity interpreted in relation to motor commands and internally modeled reafference is an important component in permitting this adaptation. During voluntary rotary movements of the body, the central nervous system automatically compensates for the Coriolis forces generated by limb movements. This allows accurate control to be maintained without our perceiving the forces generated.  相似文献

We measured the effects of postrotary head tilts on the perceived duration and the apparent axis of illusory self-rotation experienced following counterclockwise body rotation in high (1.8 G), normal (1 G), and low (0 G) gravitoinertial force environments. In the absence of head movements, the duration of illusory afterrotation was shorter in 0 G and 1.8 G than in 1 G, and it was further shortened by 40 degrees pitch-back head movements in 1 G and 1.8 G. Clockwise illusory afterrotation about the torso's vertical z-axis was always experienced in trials without postrotary head tilts. In trials with head movements, half the subjects experienced no change in this pattern; however, half experienced transient rightward roll of the torso's z-axis, which remained the rotation axis. The duration and extent of apparent roll were greater in 0 G and smaller in 1.8 G than in 1 G. We provide a functional explanation for the tendency for perceived self-rotation to be determined relative to the torso and to the gravitoinertial vertical rather than solely in relation to head position and head-fixed angular velocity sensors.  相似文献

Aftereffects following a single exposure to visual rearrangement last for 48 h and longer. Following multiple spaced exposures to visual rearrangement, aftereffects persisted for at least 2 weeks. Over the course of the multiple exposures, subjects showed diminished scatter when pointing without sight of hand to visual targets but did not show diminished constant errors. Adaptation achieved in one visuomotor transferred nearly perfectly to a test situation involving somewhat different movement demands.  相似文献

Three experiments were performed to evaluate the influence of active and passive limb movements on adaptation to visual displacement. Over a wide frequency range (0·5-1·25 Hz) with constant amplitude, 30°, significant adaptation was achieved with active and passive movements. When arm movement frequency was constant at 1·0 Hz but amplitude of movement was varied, less adaptation was achieved for both active and passive movements than when amplitude was held constant. Even at a frequency above that of most naturally occurring limb movements, 1·67 Hz, and with variable amplitude motion, significant adaptation was achieved with active and passive limb movements. These findings emphasize the importance of visual-proprioceptive discordances for adaptation to visual displacement when only sight of the hand is permitted. Significant differences did not appear between the active and passive movement conditions in any of the experiments.  相似文献

A manned space mission to Marx might take as long as I year each way. Consequently, artificial gravity is being considered as a way of preventing the debilitating effects of long-duration exposure to microgravity on the human body. The present article discusses some of the problems associated with adapting to the rotation levels that might he used to generate artificial gravity. It also describes how exposure to background-force levels greater or less than the I-G force of Earth gravity affects orientation and movement control. The primary emphasis of the article is that human movement and orientation control are dynamically adapted to the I-G force background of Earth and that accommodation to altered force levels or to rotating environments requires a wide range of adaptive changes.  相似文献

The authors investigated processing of threat words in motor vehicle accident survivors using a modified Stroop procedure. Three samples were included: 28 participants with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and pain, 26 participants with pain without PTSD, and 21 participants without pain or any psychiatric conditions. Four word categories were used: (a) accident words, (b) pain words, (c) positive words, and (d) neutral words. This study examined whether processing biases would occur to accident words only in participants with PTSD or if these biases would also be noted in the No PTSD/Pain sample. Additionally, this study examined whether processing biases would be noted to pain words in the 2 pain samples, irrespective of PTSD. Overall, color naming was significantly slower in the PTSD/Pain group in comparison with the other groups. As well, the PTSD/Pain sample showed significant response delays to both accident and pain-related words, whereas patients with No PTSD/Pain showed delays to pain stimuli only.  相似文献

Two studies of the subjective location of clicks in spoken sentences indicate: (1) within-clause phrase structure boundaries do not significantly affect the segmentation of spoken sentences; (2) divisions between underlying structure sentences determine segmentation even in the absence of corresponding explicit clause divisions in the surface phrase structure. These results support a model of speech processing according to which listeners actively segment and organize spoken sequences into potential underlying syntactic structures.  相似文献

It was found that brief periods of exposure to visual rearrangement elicit aftereffects that are still of considerable magnitude 24 h later. Despite the existence of these after-effects, visuomotor coordination does not appear to be disrupted between test periods, suggesting that these after-effects may be similar to some of the recently described situation-dependent visual after-effects.  相似文献

If one listens to a meaningless syllable that is repeated over and over, he will hear it undergo a variety of changes. These changes are extremely systematic in character and can be described phonetically in terms of reorganizations of the phones constituting the syllable and changes in a restricted set of distinctive features. When a new syllable is presented to a subject after he has listened to a particular syllable that was repeated, he will misreport the new (test) syllable. His misperception of the test syllable is related to the changes occurring in the representation of the original repeated syllable just prior to the presentation of the test syllable.  相似文献
