We report a series of three experiments designed to examine the effect of posture on tactile temporal processing. Observers reported which of two tactile stimuli, presented to the left and right index fingers (experiments 1-3; or thumb, experiment 3), was perceived first while adopting one of two postures--hands-close (adjacent, but not touching) or hands-far (1 m apart)--in the dark. Just-noticeable differences were significantly smaller in the hands-far posture across all three experiments. In the first two experiments we compared hand versus foot responses and found equivalent advantages for the hands-far posture. In the final experiment the stimuli were presented to either the same or different digit on each hand (index finger or thumb) and we found that only when the same digit on each hand was stimulated was there an advantage for the hands-far posture. The finding that temporal precision was better with greater distance contradicts predictions based on attention-switching models of temporal-order judgments, and also contrasts with results from similar experimental manipulations in other modalities (eg vision). These results provide support for a rapid and automatic process that transforms the representation of a tactile stimulus from a skin-centred reference frame to a more external (eg body-centred or allocentric) one. 相似文献

Error-monitoring abnormalities may underlie positive symptoms of schizophrenia. Response-synchronized event-related potentials during picture-word matching yielded error- and correct-response-related negativity (ERN, CRN) and positivity (Pe, Pc) and preresponse lateralized readiness potentials (LRP) from 18 schizophrenic patients and 18 controls. Both groups responded faster to matches than nonmatches, although patients were generally slower and made more errors to nonmatches. Compared with controls, patients, particularly with paranoid subtype, had smaller ERNs and larger CRNs, which were indistinguishable. LRPs showed evidence of more response conflict before errors than before correct responses in controls but not patients. Despite ERN/CRN abnormalities, post-error slowing and Pe were normal in patients, suggesting a dissociation of ERN and error awareness. Anterior cingulate and dorsolateral prefrontal cortical dysfunction in schizophrenia are implicated. 相似文献

A series of studies explored how sadness impacts the accuracy of social judgments. In Study 1, induced sadness led to reduced accuracy in judgments of teacher effectiveness from brief samples of nonverbal behavior (thin slices). In Study 2, sad participants showed reduced accuracy in judging relationship type from thin slices as well as diminished judgmental efficiency. Study 3 revealed that higher Beck Depression Inventory scores were associated with diminished accuracy on the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity. Finally, Study 4 tested the possibility that sadness impairs accuracy by promoting a more deliberative information-processing style. As expected, accuracy was higher among participants in a sad mood condition who completed the judgment task while simultaneously performing a distracting cognitive load task. 相似文献

The activation of positive stereotypes has been shown to produce academic performance boosts. Evidence regarding the role of self-relevance in producing such effects has been mixed. The authors propose that the subtlety of stereotype activation plays a key role in creating performance boosts among targets and nontargets of stereotypes. Study 1 found that subtle stereotype activation boosted performance in targets, but blatant activation did not. Study 2 was conducted on both targets and nontargets using different methods of stereotype activation. Again, targets showed performance boosts when stereotypes were subtly activated but not when they were blatantly activated. Nontargets, however, showed boosts in performance only when stereotypes were blatantly activated. The role of self-relevance in mediating sensitivity to stimuli is discussed. 相似文献

Anecdotal evidence from players and coaches indicates that cognitive processing (e.g., expectations about the upcoming pitch) plays an important role in successful baseball batting, yet this aspect of hitting has not been investigated in detail. The present study provides experimental evidence that prior expectations significantly influence the timing of a baseball swing. A two–state Markov model was used to predict the effects of pitch sequence and pitch count on batting performance. The model is a hitting strategy of switching between expectancy states using a simple set of transition rules. In a simulated batting experiment, the model provided a good fit to the hitting performance of 6 experienced college baseball players, and the estimated model parameters were highly correlated with playing level. 相似文献

Behavioral studies suggest that two affective dimensions of personality are associated with working memory (WM) function. WM load is known to modulate neural activity in the caudal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a brain region critical for the cognitive control of behavior. On this basis, we hypothesized that neural activity in the caudal ACC during a WM task should be associated with personality: correlated negatively with behavioral approach sensitivity (BAS) and positively with behavioral inhibition sensitivity (BIS). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we measured brain activity in 14 participants performing a three-back WM task. Higher self-reported BAS predicted better WM performance (r = .27) and lower WM-related activation in the caudal ACC (r = -.84), suggesting personality differences in cognitive control. The data bolster approach-withdrawal (action control) theories of personality and suggest refinements to the dominant views of ACC and personality. 相似文献

Previous research has shown that when a moving object is occluded prior to collision with another stationary object, observers tend to consistently underestimate the physical/actual time to collision (TTC). We examined whether mislocalization of the initial point of disappearance plays any role in this underestimation. To assess the contribution of mislocalization, we coupled a standard TTC paradigm with a representational-momentum paradigm. Representational momentum refers to the tendency to mislocalize the remembered stopping point of a moving object as being too far forward along an actual or implied path of motion. Using identical displays we found large representational-momentum shifts and consistent underestimation of TTC. When the displays were modified to disambiguate the point of disappearance, representational momentum was absent or significantly reduced and underestimates of TTC were effectively eliminated. These results strongly suggest that the represented point of disappearance is an important factor in TTC estimation and that systematic forward displacement of this point may partially explain frequently observed underestimation. 相似文献

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to bar-press for food reward on a successive discrimination involving periods of reward on a variable-interval (VI) 18-s schedule interspersed with periods of extinction. The two components of the schedule were signaled by a steady or a flashing light, counterbalanced between VI and extinction components. Confirming previous findings, the discrimination was easier when the flashing light signaled VI and the steady light signaled extinction, than with the reverse allocation of stimuli. This pattern of results is consistent with a dynamogenic effect of flashing light relative to steady light, facilitating discrimination when the flashing light signals the occasion to respond but impairing discrimination when this stimulus signals the occasion to withhold responding. Given this interpretation of performance in the successive discrimination task, it may be used to test three different hypotheses of the functions of the dorsal noradrenergic bundle (DB): that this subserves learning, selective attention, or behavioral inhibition plus arousal. To examine these hypotheses sham-operated animals were compared to animals in which hippocampal noradrenaline levels had been reduced by 98% and hypothalamic levels by 48% after injection into the DB of the catecholamine-specific neurotoxin, 6-hydroxy-dopamine. The lesioned animals responded more slowly than controls in VI components when these were signaled by the flashing light, and more rapidly than controls in extinction components when these were signaled by the steady light. In consequence, the discrimination was impaired only in the condition (flashing light signaling VI, steady light signaling extinction) which controls found easier. These results are in conflict with predictions from the learning and attentional hypotheses of DB function. They are consistent, however, with a model that attributes behavioral inhibitory functions to the DB projection to the septohippocampal system, and arousing functions to the DB projection to the hypothalamus. 相似文献
