The Werther effect and assisted suicide

In the course of a large epidemiological study in the region of Basle, Switzerland, from 1992 to 1996, a considerable rise in suicides assisted by the right-to-die society EXIT was uncovered after wide press coverage of an assisted double suicide of a prominent couple in that region in March 1995. Further investigation revealed that the rise of assisted suicides for a period of 2 years after the critical event was statistically significant compared to the 2 years previous to the double suicide. This was especially true for women older than 65 years. Hence, the almost enthusiastic kind of reporting about this event was apt to induce imitation suicides or a "Werther-effect."     

Graduate training and the treatment of suicidal clients: the students' perspective

Existing literature suggests that graduate programs may not provide adequate training in working with suicidal clients. Therefore, we surveyed 238 predoctoral psychology interns and assessed the prevalence of clients engaging in suicidal behaviors and the amount of formal training in managing suicidal clients received. Results showed approximately 5% of participants indicated a client suicide and 99% indicated they had treated at least one suicidal client during their graduate training. In contrast, results demonstrated only 50% of the participants reported attending programs where formal training was offered. These findings suggest a continued need for increased formal training in managing suicidal clients in graduate psychology programs.     

Toward an embodiment-disembodiment taxonomy

Psychological, neuroscientific, and linguistic evidence suggests that a mental scene is in principle cognized with a mental gaze that can take on one of three forms: embodied physical gaze, embodied mental gaze, or disembodied mental gaze. Combinations of these forms also occur. A first sketch of the embodiment-disembodiment taxonomy that emerges from this threefold distinction is presented.
