Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are a highly complex and rich phenomena, and this has a number of important clinical, theoretical and methodological implications. However, until recently, this fact has not always been incorporated into the experimental designs and theoretical paradigms used by researchers within the cognitive sciences. In this paper, we will briefly outline two recent examples of phenomenologically informed approaches to the study of AVHs taken from a cognitive science perspective. In the first example, based on Larøi and Woodward (Harv Rev Psychiatry 15:109–117, 2007), it is argued that reality monitoring studies examining the cognitive underpinnings of hallucinations have not reflected the phenomenological complexity of AVHs in their experimental designs and theoretical framework. The second example, based on Jones (Schizophr Bull, in press, 2010), involves a critical examination of the phenomenology of AVHs in the context of two other prominent cognitive models: inner speech and intrusions from memory. It will be shown that, for both examples, the integration of a phenomenological analysis provides important improvements both on a methodological, theoretical and clinical level. This will be followed by insights and critiques from philosophy and clinical psychiatry—both of which offer a phenomenological alternative to the empiricist–rationalist conceptualisation of AVHs inherent to the cognitive sciences approach. Finally, the paper will conclude with ideas as to how the cognitive sciences may integrate these latter perspectives into their methodological and theoretical programmes. 相似文献

In response to concerns with existing procedures for measuring strategic control over implicit knowledge in artificial grammar learning (AGL), we introduce a more stringent measurement procedure. After two separate training blocks which each consisted of letter strings derived from a different grammar, participants either judged the grammaticality of novel letter strings with respect to only one of these two grammars (pure-block condition), or had the target grammar varying randomly from trial to trial (novel mixed-block condition) which required a higher degree of conscious flexible control. Random variation in the colour and font of letters was introduced to disguise the nature of the rule and reduce explicit learning. Strategic control was observed both in the pure-block and mixed-block conditions, and even among participants who did not realise the rule was based on letter identity. Preschoolers who explore objects haptically often fail to recognize those objects in subsequent visual tests. This suggests that children may represent qualitatively different information in vision and haptics and/or that children’s haptic perception may be poor. In this study, 72 children (2½-5 years of age) and 20 adults explored unfamiliar objects either haptically or visually and then chose a visual match from among three test objects, each matching the exemplar on one perceptual dimension. All age groups chose shape-based matches after visual exploration. Both 5-year-olds and adults also chose shape-based matches after haptic exploration, but younger children did not match consistently in this condition. Certain hand movements performed by children during haptic exploration reliably predicted shape-based matches but occurred at very low frequencies. Thus, younger children’s difficulties with haptic-to-visual information transfer appeared to stem from their failure to use their hands to obtain reliable haptic information about objects. 相似文献

In two experiments, we examined the impact of the degree of match between sequential auditory perceptual organization processes
and the demands of a short-term memory task (memory for order vs. item information). When a spoken sequence of digits was
presented so as to promote its perceptual partitioning into two distinct streams by conveying it in alternating female (F)
and male (M) voices (FMFMFMFM)—thereby disturbing the perception of true temporal order—recall of item order was greatly impaired
(as compared to recall of item identity). Moreover, an order error type consistent with the formation of voice-based streams
was committed more quickly in the alternating-voice condition (Exp. 1). In contrast, when the perceptual organization of the
sequence mapped well onto an optimal two-group serial rehearsal strategy—by presenting the two voices in discrete clusters
(FFFFMMMM)—order, but not item, recall was enhanced (Exp. 2). The results are consistent with the view that the degree of
compatibility between perceptual and deliberate sequencing processes is a key determinant of serial short-term memory performance.
Alternative accounts of talker variability effects in short-term memory, based on the concept of a dedicated phonological

This study examined neural features of emotional responses to errors. We specifically examined whether directed emotion regulation
of negative emotion associated with error modulates action-monitoring functions of anterior cingulate cortex, including conflict
monitoring, error processing, and error prevention. Seventeen healthy adults performed a continuous performance task during
assessment by fMRI. In each block, participants were asked either to increase or decrease their negative emotional responses
or to react naturally after error commission. Emotion regulation instructions were associated with modulation of rostral and
dorsal anterior activity and of their effective connectivity following errors and conflict. Cingulate activity and connectivity
predicted subsequent errors. These data may suggest that responses to errors are affected by emotion and that aspects of emotion
and cognition are inextricably linked, even during a nominally cognitive task. 相似文献

The present study examined the flexibility with which people can adopt different category schemes in the spatial domain. In
a location memory task, participants viewed and estimated the locations of four kinds of objects that were spatially grouped
by object identity. This identity-based arrangement was either congruent or incongruent with the perceptually based, geometric
categories that have been reported in previous research. Four experiments examined the conditions under which these different
category schemes are used to inform estimates of locations. The results showed that use of identity information depended on
the number of objects to be remembered during a trial: When one or two objects were remembered at a time, only geometric categories
affected estimates, but when four objects were to be remembered, both geometric categories and identity groupings affected
estimates. As memory load increases, participants rely on additional sources to inform their estimates of location. 相似文献

Categories are learned and used in a variety of ways, but the research focus has been on classification learning. Recent work
contrasting classification with inference learning of categories found important later differences in category performance.
However, theoretical accounts differ on whether this is due to an inherent difference between the tasks or to the implementation
decisions. The inherent-difference explanation argues that inference learners focus on the internal structure of the categories—what
each category is like—while classification learners focus on diagnostic information to predict category membership. In two
experiments, using real-world categories and controlling for earlier methodological differences, inference learners learned
more about what each category was like than did classification learners, as evidenced by higher performance on a novel classification
test. These results suggest that there is an inherent difference between learning new categories by classifying an item versus

The current study uniquely extended research that has linked traumatic event exposure to panic-spectrum problems among adolescents. It was hypothesized that among 127 adolescents (age range: 10 to 17 years; M = 14.63, SD = 2.24), those who endorsed a history of traumatic event exposure would evidence significantly greater anxious and fearful reactivity to a well-established 3-min voluntary hyperventilation procedure compared to nonexposed individuals. Results were consistent with hypotheses, suggesting traumatic event exposure is associated with anxious and fearful reactivity to abrupt increases in bodily arousal among adolescents. Moreover, consistent with hypotheses, anxiety sensitivity significantly mediated the relations between traumatic event exposure and both self-reported panic symptoms and panic symptoms elicited by the challenge. Future prospective research is now needed to better understand temporal relations between traumatic event exposure and indices of panic and related vulnerability. 相似文献
