The emergence of ethnic and racial attitudes in preschool-aged children

The author assessed preschool-aged children's attitudes (N = 70) toward their own and 2 ethnic or racial out-groups using traditional forced-choice measures and a new method that assessed children's out-group attitudes independently of their attitudes toward their own group. When required to assign positive and negative traits to either their own group or an ethnic or racial out-group, children evaluated their own group favorably relative to the out-group in question. However, when not forced to choose between groups, children evaluated out-groups positively, indicating that own-group preference relative to ethnic and racial out-groups was not equated with out-group rejection. Children's positive out-group evaluations did vary with the out-group being considered and were reflective of the local social context, suggesting the influence of social learning. The results indicate that young children's positive feelings toward their own group do not necessarily involve or cause negative out-group attitudes and that various factors might differentially influence in-group and out-group attitudes.

Computable Isomorphisms of Boolean Algebras with Operators

In this paper we investigate computable isomorphisms of Boolean algebras with operators (BAOs). We prove that there are examples of polymodal Boolean algebras with finitely many computable isomorphism types. We provide an example of a polymodal BAO such that it has exactly one computable isomorphism type but whose expansions by a constant have more than one computable isomorphism type. We also prove a general result showing that BAOs are complete with respect to the degree spectra of structures, computable dimensions, expansions by constants, and the degree spectra of relations.     

Semisimplicity,EDPC and Discriminator Varieties of Residuated Lattices

We prove that all semisimple varieties of FL _ew-algebras are discriminator varieties. A characterisation of discriminator and EDPC varieties of FL _ew-algebras follows. It matches exactly a natural classification of logics over FL _ew proposed by H. Ono.     

Psychosocial Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening: Concerns With Self-presentation and Social Evaluation1

The incidence of cervical cancer has decreased over 70% in the last several decades due in large part to the Papanicolaou (Pap) test. Despite the acknowledged efficacy of this test, however, many women do not receive cervical screening. The present study investigated the contributions of individual differences in concerns with self-presentation and social evaluation to the prediction of intentions and behavior involving cervical screening. Eighty-two Caucasian women completed measures of social anxiety, physique anxiety, public and private self-consciousness, fear of negative evaluation, and self-esteem, in addition to questions assessing their knowledge and behavior regarding cervical screening. Social anxiety significantly predicted intention to receive cervical screening for a medical reason, as well as the frequency with which the women actually received gynecological examinations. Physique anxiety accounted for a significant percentage of the variance in women's likelihood of receiving cervical screening within the next year. Interpersonal aspects of the gynecological exam, as well as implications of the findings for gynecological practice are discussed.     

Token economy: who responds how?

Token economy programs (TEP) can successfully modify a variety of specific and generalized behaviors in clinical populations (Gripp and Magaro, 1974). but this general success is offset by the frequent occurrence of individual nonresponsiveness (Kazdin. 1973), Two solutions to the problem of nonresponsiveness have been proposed. One proposal regards the nonresponder as needing intensified training with behavioral methods while the other suggests that the operant paradigm may be inappropriate or inefficient with such patients. In either case, it would be helpful to identify potential nonresponders before or shortly after their introduction to a TEP in order that alternative treatments or pretraining might be developed to suit them while reserving the TEP for those who could derive maximum benefit from it. However, little consistent relationship between individual responsiveness and other patient-related characteristics has been found upon which to base such judgements. The present research examined the changes in response to treatment over time of a TEP population and its component diagnostic groups with the hypothesis that distinct and unique patterns of response would be associated with the diagnostic groups and that the patterns would be different from that shown by the total group.

Felicitometric hermeneutics: interpreting quality of life measurements

The use of quality of life (QOL) outcomes in clinical trials is increasing as a number of practical, ethical, methodological, and regulatory reasons for their use have become apparent. It is important, then, that QOL measurements and differences between QOL scores be readily interpretable. We study interpretation in two contexts: when determining QOL and when basing decisions on QOL differences. We consider both clinical situations involving individual patients and research contexts, e.g., randomized clinical trials, involving groups of patients. We note the ethical importance of such understanding: proper interpretation and communication facilitate health care decision making. Communication that facilitates interpretation is of moral significance since better communication can attenuate ethical problems and inform choices. Much of what is communication worthy about QOL assessments is determined by the particular QOL instrument used in the assessment and how it is administered. In practice, these choices will be driven by the purpose of the assessment, but, it is argued, to maximize understanding, we should combine the information garnered from traditional standardized QOL instruments, from individualized QOL assessments, and from a recently proposed dialogic paradigm, where QOL is determined by shared conversation regarding the interpretation of texts. And, while some studies can surely succeed using abbreviated methods of administration (e.g., postal surveys may suffice for certain purposes), we will focus on methods of administration involving interviewer?Crespondent interaction. We suggest that during the QOL elicitation process, interviewer and respondent should engage in a two-way conversation in order to achieve a shared understanding of the ??answers?? to QOL ??questions?? and, finally, to reach a shared interpretation of the individual??s QOL.     

The Power of a Propositional Constant

Monomodal logic has exactly two maximally normal logics, which are also the only quasi-normal logics that are Post complete, and they are complete for validity in Kripke frames. Here we show that addition of a propositional constant to monomodal logic allows the construction of continuum many maximally normal logics that are not valid in any Kripke frame, or even in any complete modal algebra. We also construct continuum many quasi-normal Post complete logics that are not normal. The set of extensions of S4.3 is radically altered by the addition of a constant: we use it to construct continuum many such normal extensions of S4.3, and continuum many non-normal ones, none of which have the finite model property. But for logics with weakly transitive frames there are only eight maximally normal ones, of which five extend K4 and three extend S4.
