Intuition in family therapy: A short manual on post-modern witchcraft

Intuition is an important part of a mature clinician's work. Yet, it is a component of clinical work which is looked upon with suspicion, due in part to the Middle-Age's association between intuition and the work of witches. This paper describes a tenuous link between intuition, witches, and Carl Whitaker. Patterns for including intuition in family therapy are discussed.     

Content filtering human speech: A simple electronic system

The use of electronic bandpass filtering for content-masking speech samples in studies on expressive aspects of vocal behavior is discussed. A simple electronic filtering system, which can be built easily and which can be adopted readily for a variety of applications, is described.     

Vocal cues to deception: A comparative channel approach

The study investigated the leakage potential of different voice and speech cues using a cue isolation and masking design. Speech samples taken from an earlier experiment were used in which 15 female students of nursing dissimulated negative affect produced by an unpleasant movie or told the truth about positive affect following a pleasant movie. Several groups of judges rated these speech samples in five conditions: (1) forward or clear, (2) electronic filtering, (3) random splicing, (4) backwards, (5) pitch inversion, (6) tone-silence sequences. The results show that vocal cues do indeed carry leakage information and that, as reflected in the differences among the conditions masking different types of cues respectively, voice quality cues may be centrally implicated. In addition, gender differences in decoding ability are discussed.     

The short-term storage as a buffer memory between long-term storage and the motor system: A simultaneous-processing model

It is assumed that in a free-recall task the short-term store serves as a memory buffer between the long-term store and a final motor stage of word production. Because of this the retrieval process in long-term store is not hindered by the final motor stage of word production since continued output from the long-term store queues in the buffer for motoric processing. Otherwise a time consuming communication between the two processes would be necessary. A stochastic model of this conceptualization is provided to predict the temporal course of free recall as well as a paradigm in which the contribution of the short-term store in free recall can be studied. The experimental results from this paradigm were used to test the model and to estimate short-term storage capacity on the basis of the time course of free recall. The model predictions were in good agreement with the data and the capacity estimate coincides well with estimates found by totally different methods reported in the literature.     

A Comparative Analysis of the Influence of Economic Culture on East and West German Consumers' Subjective Product Meanings

Les consommateurs des économies planifiées ont développé des savoir-faire différents de ceux adoptés par les consommateurs des économies de marché. Alors que les premiers ont appris à localiser les produits, les seconds se sont exercès à comparer et à choisir entre les produits proposés. Dans le domaine alimentaire, l' ancienne Allemagne de l' Est offrait une série de produits quantitativement suffisants mais peu variés et de qualityé médiocre ou moyenne. Les produits étaient vendus dans tout le pays a des prix imposés. Désormais, la variété et la diversité des qualityés est la měme qu'à l' Ouest et l' on constate des variations de prix considérables. On a étudié les différences entre les consommateurs de l' Est et de l' Ouest en comparant des échantillons de consommateurs de Kiel et de Rostock. On a analysé leur perception des produits alimentaires (du fromage et des plats surgelés) et comment ils les rattachaient à des valeurs (à partir d' une approche moyens-fins ). Les dimensions perceptives de base, qui émanent des caractéristiques concrètes des produits, sont les měmes partout, quoique la perception soit plus précise à l' Ouest qu'à l' Est. L' analyse des valeurs fondamentales de l' existence chez les consommateurs allemands de l' Est et de l' Ouest (gřce au Schwartz Value Inventory ) a montré que ceux de l' Est se portaient sur les valeurs collectives et ceux de l' Ouest sur les valeurs individuelles. L' analyse du lien que les consommateurs établissent entre les caractéristiques concrètes des produits et les valeurs fondamentales de la vie montra qu'il y avait de légères     

Construal Level Theory as an Integrative Framework for Behavioral Decision‐Making Research and Consumer Psychology

In this comment to Trope, Liberman and Makslak's lead article, I refrain from any attempt to review or recapitulate the growing body of research in social psychology in general and in consumer science in particular that is explicitly devoted to construal level theory (CLT). Rather, granting the status of CLT as a leading contemporary theory, with rich implications and applications in consumer science, I concentrate on recent phenomena in judgment and decision making for which CLT provides an implicit account. Specifically, CLT affords an integrative framework for understanding a whole variety of preference reversals—a major challenge for students of consumer behavior.     

A suicide epidemic in a psychiatric hospital.

The authors report in detail on an epidemic of six inpatient suicides in a psychiatric hospital in Finland. Suggestion and identification had an effect on the timing as well as on the method of four of the suicides. The epidemic is viewed from individual, network, and organizational perspectives. The authors speculate on how such epidemics could be avoided. An increase in inpatient suicide rates has been reported from many countries, and the Werther effect may thus become a topic of considerable importance in psychiatric hospitals in the future.
