Narrative analysis, creative writing, and interactive reflective writing have been identified as valuable for professional identity formation and resilience among medical and premedical students alike. This study proposes that medical student blogs are novel pedagogical tools for fostering peer-to-peer learning in academic medicine and are currently underutilized as a near-peer resource for premedical students to learn about the medical profession. To evaluate the pedagogical utility of medical student blogs for introducing core themes in the medical humanities, the authors conducted qualitative analysis of one hundred seventy-six reflective essays by baccalaureate premedical students written in response to medical student-authored narrative blog posts. Using an iterative thematic approach, the authors identified common patterns in the reflective essays, distilled major themes, coded the essays, and conducted narrative analysis through close reading. Qualitative analysis identified three core themes (empathic conflict, bias in healthcare, and the humanity of medicine) and one overarching theme (near-peer affinities). The premedical students’ essays demonstrated significant self-reflection in response to near-peer works, discussed their perceptions of medical professionalism, and expressed concerns about their future progress through the medical education system. The essays consistently attributed the impact of the medical student narratives to the authors’ status as near-peers. The authors conclude that reading and engaging in reflective writing about near-peer blog posts encourages premedical students to develop an understanding of core concepts in the medical humanities and promotes their reflection on the profession of medicine. Thus, incorporating online blogs written by medical trainees as narrative works in medical humanities classrooms is a novel pedagogical method for fostering peer-to-peer learning in academic medicine.

Self-ratings by 308 shop workers of their job variety, autonomy, task identity, and skill challenge correlate significantly with ratings by observers of the jobs' skill requirements. Self-ratings, however, are unrelated to observers' estimates of the physical demands of the jobs or to environmental conditions of the work. The self-ratings and observer measures provide complementary, not substitute, information. Self-ratings can signal person-job dysfunctions, and more objective job measures can identify possible sources of the dysfunctions. Modifications to job characteristics measures are discussed and suggestions are made to begin a new phase of programmatic job characteristics research.  相似文献

The present study examined the effects of intraseptal administration of the GABAergic agonist muscimol on performance of a radial-arm maze (RAM) task. Male Long-Evans rats were trained to perform a RAM task in which a 1-h delay was imposed between the sample and the test session. In this task rats have access to four out of eight maze arms during a predelay session. Following a 1-h delay, rats are returned to the maze and allowed to freely choose among all eight arms. Arms not blocked during the predelay session are baited, and entry into an arm chosen during the predelay session or a repeated entry into a postdelay chosen arm constitutes an error. Following acquisition, animals were implanted with a single cannula aimed at the medial septum. A within-subjects design was utilized to examine the effects of intraseptal administration of muscimol (0.0, 0.75, 1.5 or 3.0 nmol) on performance in this task. All drugs or artificial cerebrospinal fluid were administered immediately following the predelay session. Muscimol, a GABA-A agonist, produced a dose-dependent impairment in maze performance as evidenced by fewer correct choices in the first four postdelay choices and an increase in the number of errors. Intraseptal administration of muscimol did not significantly alter latency per choice on the RAM task nor did it affect locomotor activity levels. Muscimol-induced impairments were also observed when a 4-h delay was imposed between the fourth and the fifth maze selection, suggesting that the behavioral deficit represents an inability to store or retain spatial working memories rather than a general performance deficit. These data indicated that pharmacological manipulation of GABA-A receptors within the medial septum modifies working memory processes. The potential interaction of GABAergic and cholinergic mechanisms in the modulation of working memory processes is discussed.  相似文献

Lesions of the medial hypothalamus, medial accumbens, or septum were made in 21- to 25-day-old male hooded rats. Half of the animals in each group were subsequently reared in groups and the other half in isolation. When tested for defensiveness toward the experimenter at 31, 34, and 37 days postoperatively, rats with medial hypothalamic lesions were most hyperdefensive toward the experimenter if reared in isolation but were significantly more defensive than sham-lesioned animals even when reared in groups. Rats with septal lesions were significantly more defensive than sham-lesioned animals only when reared in isolation while rats with medial accumbens lesions were not different from controls whether reared individually or in groups. These results suggest that the medial hypothalamus may have a special importance in determining temperament since the hyperdefensiveness that results from interference with its functioning is resistant to experiential remediation.  相似文献

The effects of color on children's food choices were investigated. Subjects were 120 children who were equally distributed among each of the combinations of age (5 vs. 9 years old), sex (male vs. female), food type (3 types of candies), and color (red, green, yellow, and orange) in a counterbalanced, factorial, analysis-of-variance design with repeated measures on subjects. A significant main effect for color indicated that children preferred foods that were red, green, orange, and yellow, in that order. Interpretation of this main effect was not interfered with by main effects or interaction terms involving age, sex, or food type, which served as alternative rival hypotheses.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of integrating an unstable group of seriously disturbed adolescents into an existing day treatment program. Behavioral data were collected for an established group of subjects who were in treatment one year prior to and one year after the arrival of a new group of severely disturbed adolescents. It was found that the disruptive behavior displayed by the new admission subjects was not imitated by the subjects of the established group. Rather, there was a significant decrease in aggression and in the overall number of psychiatric events for the established group. The treatment milieu was seen to be resistant to the effects of the new admissions largely due to the structured form of treatment.  相似文献

Recent interviews of 15 eminent community psychologists, 6 of whom attended the founding conference at Swampscott, highlighted some historically significant aspects of community psychology's emergence and provided background information concerning the conference's processes and content. The interview informants described the idealism of the era in the context of societal unrest, the struggle with psychiatrists' control of extant mental health services, and the uncertain role of a community orientation within academic psychology as key social historical factors. The informants identified some of the behind-the-scenes preparations for Swampscott as well as the conference climate and emergent ideology. This study explored the differences on personality variables between upperclass students who made congruent and incongruent occupational choices. The personality variables were operationally defined by the California Psychological Inventory and the Omnibus Personality Inventory. Congruent and incongruent current occupational choice groups were defined operationally using the Self Directed Search. The analysis of variance revealed the main effect of groups to be significant for nine personality variables. The test for the main effect of sex was found to be significant for seven personality variables. The test for interaction was found to be significant for three personality variables. Findings suggest that students in the congruent male group tend to report better maintenance of personal and vocational stability and greater satisfaction than students in the incongruent male and female groups.  相似文献
