The emergence of shared symbol systems is considered to be a pivotal moment in human evolution and human development. These changes are normally explained by reference to changes in people's internal cognitive processes. We present 2 experiments which provide evidence that changes in the external, collaborative processes that people use to communicate can also affect the structure and organization of symbol systems independently of cognitive change. We propose that mutual-modifiability-opportunities for people to edit or manipulate each other's contributions-is a key constraint on the emergence of complex symbol systems. We discuss the implications for models of language development and the origins of compositionality. 相似文献

In past work, the authors produced divergent patterns of courtship and communication in juvenile male cowbirds (Molothrus ater) by providing them with different social experiences during their 1st year. Here the authors determined whether these different social patterns could be transmitted to new generations of juvenile males. In Experiment 1, the authors exposed groups of juveniles to adult males who differed in the amount of male-male competition they produced. In Experiment 2, they gave groups of juveniles either social access to adult males or only visual and acoustic access to those males. In both experiments, juvenile males developed patterns of courtship and competition similar to those expressed by the adult males with whom they had social contact. The juveniles never had the opportunity to observe some of the adults' behaviors that they came to replicate. This suggests that the role of the adults was to establish the social structure in the groups, modifying juveniles' early social interactions. Juveniles were then "cultured" within these different learning environments, constructing social behavior similar to the adult males' behavior in their 1st year. 相似文献

Examined the age of onset of ADHD symptoms and subtypes using parent ratings of a large sample of elementary school students.
Results showed: (1) in children with ADHD-combined type, hyperactive-impulsive symptoms emerged at younger ages than inattention
symptoms; (2) about one-fifth of children who met symptom count and impairment criteria for ADHD did not meet the age of onset
criterion; (3) Children who did not meet the age of onset criterion consisted primarily of children with inattention problems;
and (4) children who did not meet the age of onset criterion had more impaired parent-child relationships, self-esteem, family
functioning, and higher overall impairment ratings than children who did meet the criterion. These results raise questions

This study assessed the efficacy of a time-sensitive cognitive remediation summer program (CRSP) that provided patients and their families with tools to help mitigate neurocognitive deficits and promote independence to foster precursor transition of medical care skills. A total of 38 participants (aged 9–15) were included in one of the CRSPs offered yearly from 2013 to 2016. A longitudinal design was employed and at each evaluation time point, one week before start of the CRSP (pre-testing) and within three weeks after the end of the program (post-testing)), participants were administered measures of executive functioning in addition to parent ratings of behavior, executive functioning, and adaptive skills (Year 1–Year 4). In Year 4, additional measures were collected, including parenting style and parent engagement and involvement in the program. Results from Year 1 to Year 4 (n = 35) demonstrated that participants in the CRSP showed significant improvement on neuropsychological testing in sustained and selective attention, planning, and cognitive flexibility. Robust changes in parent ratings of adaptive functioning from pre- to post-treatment were also found. Specific to Year 4 (n = 13), results revealed that participants showed improvement in levels of independence with at least one of the individualized goals focused on during the program. This study provided a systematic method to gauge the levels of instruction necessary to reach goals, a crucial tool in skill-teaching. Overall, our study provides evidence for the efficacy of the CRSP and validates a feasible intervention that can be integrated into standard of care for pediatric medical populations. 相似文献

Previous research and popular conceptualizations of suicide have posited that many suicides are the result of impulsive, “on a whim” decisions. However, recent research demonstrates that most suicides are not attempted impulsively, and in fact involve a plan. Legally, suicide has historically been considered to be a superseding intervening cause of death that exonerates other parties from liability, but currently there are two general exceptions to this view. Specifically, another party may be found responsible for a suicide if that party either caused the suicide or failed in its duty to prevent the suicide from occurring. Both of these exceptions assume that the resulting suicide was foreseeable. Given that recent research has indicated that most suicides are planned, and thereby foreseeable to a certain extent under many circumstances, this article discusses issues of foreseeability as they pertain to litigation involving third party liability for the suicide of university students, prison inmates, and mental health patients. The authors contend that the surest way for universities, prison staff, and mental health practitioners to avoid being held liable for a suicide is to appropriately assess for suicidal intent. Intervention research with youths at elevated risk for suicidal behavior and suicide—a vulnerable and high risk population—presents investigators with numerous ethical challenges. This report specifically addresses those challenges involving the informed consent and assent process with parents/guardians and youths. The challenges are delineated in the context of pertinent laws and regulatory requirements, and guidelines are suggested for their practical resolution. These are illustrated with case examples from NIMH‐funded intervention trials. Through the sharing of such methodological information, intervention researchers can support each other in conducting ethical research in a manner that does not unduly compromise scientific rigor. 相似文献

This study prospectively investigated the effects of major life events on subsequent exercise adherence rates of individuals (N = 173) participating in a 2-year, randomized, controlled clinical trial of 3 different exercise conditions (higher-intensity home-based; lower-intensity home-based; and higher-intensity class-based). For 3 of 4 6-month exercise-adherence periods, an analysis of variance indicated a significant main effect (p < .05) for major life events. Compared with participants reporting 0 or 1 major life event, exercise adherence in the maintenance phase was significantly lower for those reporting 3 or 4 major life events regardless of the exercise condition. No significant life-event-exercise-adherence relationship was found in the adoption phase of exercise participation (i.e., Months 1 to 6). The deleterious effect of life events emphasizes the importance of instruction regarding how to prepare for high-risk situations that can lead to missed exercise sessions or to program attrition. 相似文献
