A stochastic model for free recall

A statistical model for verbal learning is presented and tested against experimental data. The model describes a Markov process with a realizable absorbing state, allowing complete learning on some finite trial as well as imperfect retention prior to this trial.This work was carried out while the author was at Lincoln Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Operated with support from the U. S. Army, Navy, and Air Force.     

Occupational Aspirations of Selected Appalachian Youth

This study examines the concepts that Appalachian youth have concerning their probable life work. After comparing and contrasting these students with a group of native and Appalachian migrant students in an Ohio city, the following results were noted: (a) Appalachian youth who stay in the geographic area have a significantly lower aspirational level than do those students who are native to a rurban area; (b) the Appalachian youth have different personal role models and characteristics for success than those students who have migrated from the Appalachian area; (c) one of the major problems in raising the occupational aspirations of Appalachian students appears to be lack of information and opportunity rather than lack of ability.     

Some observations and measurements of the Panum phenomenon

The angular separation between the “binocular” and the “monocular” line of Panum’s limiting case was systematically varied under conditions in which the changes in seen relative depth could be quantified. Stereoscopic, equidistant, and anomalous depth localizations were seen. A criterion of variability of depth localization was utilized to differentiate the mechanism operative in determining the seen depth. When stereopsis is clearly present, depth in Panum’s limiting case is predictable and reveals a one-to-one relationship with the angle of lateral separation of the stereoscopic stimuli, i.e., the odd line cooperates in free binocular vision with both of the paired lines to give “true” stereoscopic depth. The range of angular separation over which Panum’s limiting case will give rise to stereoscopic depth is increased by free eye movements well beyond the usually reported limits of Panum’s retinal areas.
