Many studies have used mirror-image stimulation in attempts to find self-recognition in monkeys. However, very few studies
have presented monkeys with video images of themselves; the present study is the first to do so with capuchin monkeys. Six
tufted capuchin monkeys were individually exposed to live face-on and side-on video images of themselves (experimental Phase
1). Both video screens initially elicited considerable interest. Two adult males looked preferentially at their face-on image,
whereas two adult females looked preferentially at their side-on image; the latter elicited lateral movements and head-cocking.
Only males showed communicative facial expressions, which were directed towards the face-on screen. In Phase 2 monkeys discriminated
between real-time, face-on images and identical images delayed by 1 s, with the adult females especially preferring real-time
images. In this phase both screens elicited facial expressions, shown by all monkeys. In Phase 3 there was no evidence of
discrimination between previously recorded video images of self and similar images of a familiar conspecific. Although they
showed no signs of explicit self-recognition, the monkeys’ behaviour strongly suggests recognition of the correspondence between
kinaesthetic information and external visual effects. In species such as humans and great apes, this type of self-awareness
feeds into a system that gives rise to explicit self-recognition. 相似文献

A new technique (manipulation of overlapping rivalrous images by polarizing filters, or MORI) has been invented for presenting on the same screen two different images that can be seen separately by two groups of viewers without their noticing the overlap. It can easily create desired artificial conflicts among viewers. Two perpendicular polarizing filters provide separate invisible channels from dual video projectors to two groups of viewers on a single screen. The basic principle of the presentation technique, details of the apparatus, and limitations are introduced. As an example of the application of this technique, an eyewitness experiment is briefly reported. The results of experiments conducted by the author and colleagues provide evidence of the effectiveness of this technique with various projectors, video materials, group sizes, and ages of participants. 相似文献

Using the Mori technique in which two different movies presented on the same screen were viewed separately by two groups without their noticing the duality, two experiments were carried out with 138 undergraduates in groups of varying sizes to examine the effects of cowitnesses with the same or different information on these witnesses' memory distortion. Exp. 1 investigated the cowitness effects in a one-versus-two situation, while Exp. 2 investigated the effects in a two-versus-two situation. Analysis showed isolated eyewitnesses who had no supporting cowitnesses changed their minds more frequently toward the majority and, when they had a cowitness who shared the same information, they tended to stick to their original reports even after being confronted with conflicting information in a discussion. 相似文献

Like humans, songbirds, including Bengalese finches, have hierarchical structures in their vocalizations. When humans perceive
a sentence, processing occurs in phrase units, not words. In this study, we investigated whether songbirds also perceive their
songs by chunks (clusters of song notes) rather than single song notes. We trained male Bengalese finches to react to a short
noise in a Go/NoGo task. We then superimposed the noise onto recordings of their own songs and examined whether the reaction
time was affected by the location of the short noise, that is, whether the noise was placed between chunks or in the middle
of a chunk. The subjects’ reaction times to the noise in the middle of a chunk were significantly longer than those to the
noise placed between chunks. This result was not observed, however, when the songs were played in reverse. We thus concluded
that Bengalese finches perceive their songs by chunks rather than single notes. 相似文献

We investigated perceived range, perceived velocity, and perceived duration of the body rotating in the frontal plane (in roll). Specifically, to examine how shear to the otoliths in the inner ears and tactile pressure to the trunk affect judgments of range and velocity, in two experiments, we manipulated rotating range (30°–160°), rotating velocity (1.8°/sec to 9.6°/sec), mean tilt of the body (?60°, 0°, and 60°), and exposure to the visual vertical. Thirty-three normal or blindfolded participants made verbal judgments of range, velocity, and duration for each combination of these factors. The exponents of the power functions fitted to these judgments were, as a first approximation, .94, .61, and .84 for range, velocity, and duration, respectively, and perceived velocity was proportional to the ratio of perceived range to perceived duration (r = .91). These results suggest that the vestibular and somatosensory inputs are effective on judgments of range, but less so on judgments of velocity, and that perceived velocity may be determined as a ratio of perceived range to perceived duration. In addition, we found that (1) when the range the body has traveled is constant, the perceived range increases as the objective velocity decreases (proprioceptive τ effect); (2) self-motion through the tilted roll sometimes enlarges perceived range and perceived duration but reduces perceived velocity; and (3) the exposure to the visual vertical reduces variability of judgments for range and velocity and also reduces perceived range and perceived velocity of self-motion within a small range through the vertical roll. 相似文献

Aspects of a definition for two characteristics of adolescence, being capable of doing something or not and having the right to do it, are proposed since adolescence is a period when a person is capable of but without the right to do something. 相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to demonstrate that skilled soroban (Japanese abacus) operators can improve digit memory retention by manipulating the beads of a ‘mental soroban’ which is analogous to the actual one. In Experiment 1, soroban experts and control subjects were given two digit memory tasks. In one task, pictures of a soroban figure and in the other, pictures of digit sequences, were presented to the subjects during the retention interval. Soroban experts experienced greater interference from presentation of the soroban figures than the digits; on the other hand, the reverse was true in the control subjects. In Experiment 2, ther soroban experts and control subjects were given the same digit memory tasks under three conditions—soroban pictures, pictures of digit sequences, and human faces were presented to subjects during the retention period of 15 s. The soroban experts were more affected by the presentation of the soroban figures than by the faces or digits, whereas the controls showed more interference from the digits than by the presentation of faces or soroban pictures. 相似文献

The decay of the peak intensity of the electron spin resonance signal associated with light-induced dangling bonds in a-Si(H) has been measured at room temperature as a function of time during very long intervals such as 3400 days after the intense pulsed illumination was turned off. The decay curve is fitted by an exponential function with a decay constant of 393 days and reaches a steady-state value smaller than the value taken before illumination. Such a long-term metastability of light-induced dangling bonds in a-Si:H is discussed in terms of reconstruction of the amorphous network occurring through hydrogen motion. 相似文献

The Minkowski property of psychological space has long been of interest to researchers. A common strategy has been calculating
the stress in multidimensional scaling for many Minkowski exponent values and choosing the one that results in the lowest
stress. However, this strategy has an arbitrariness problem—that is, a loss function. Although a recently proposed Bayesian
approach could solve this problem, the method was intended for individual subject data. It is unknown whether this method
is directly applicable to averaged or single data, which are common in psychology and behavioral science. Therefore, we first
conducted a simulation study to evaluate the applicability of the method to the averaged data problem and found that it failed
to recover the true Minkowski exponent. Therefore, a new method is proposed that is a simple extension of the existing Euclidean
Bayesian multidimensional scaling to the Minkowski metric. Another simulation study revealed that the proposed method could
successfully recover the true Minkowski exponent. BUGS codes used in this study are given in the Appendix. 相似文献

In a previous study, Adachi, Kuwahata, Fujita, Tomonaga & Matsuzawa demonstrated that infant Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) form cross‐modal representations of conspecifics but not of humans. However, because the subjects in the experiment were raised in a large social group and had considerably less exposure to humans than to conspecifics, it was an open question whether their lack of cross‐modal representation of humans simply reflected their lower levels of exposure to humans or was caused by some innate restrictions on the ability. To answer the question, we used the same procedure but tested infant Japanese macaques with more extensive experience of humans in daily life. Briefly, we presented monkeys with a photograph of either a monkey or a human face on an LCD monitor after playing a vocalization of one of these two species. The subjects looked at the monitor longer when a voice and a face were mismatched than when they were matched, irrespective of whether the preceding vocalization was a monkey's or a human's. This suggests that once monkeys have extensive experience with humans, they will form a cross‐modal representation of humans as well as of conspecifics. 相似文献
