The rhetorical voice of psychoanalysis has a long history and has only recently come to be seen as a special feature of the theory. Its beginnings can be found in Freud's earliest pleadings for the usefulness of metaphor and analogy, although he felt that they were largely provisional and would eventually be replaced by more durable concepts. We have begun to see problems in replacing the central metaphors; the rhetorical base of psychoanalysis may be more enduring than we thought. While our metaphors may never provide epistemic access to the stuff of the mind, they can and do point to specific clinical encounters. Ways must be found to expand our rhetorical treasure chest and develop language even better suited to our concepts and observations.  相似文献

The accuracy with which graphical elements are judged was assessed in a psychophysical task that parallels the real-life use of graphs. The task is a variant of the Metfessel-Comrey constant-sum method, and an associated model based on Stevens's law is proposed. The stimuli were horizontal and vertical lines, bars, pie and disk slices, cylinders, boxes, and table entries (numbers). Stevens's law exponents were near unity for numbers and 1-dimensional elements but were also close to 1 for elements possessing 2 or 3 apparent dimensions--subjects accommodate extraneous dimensions that do not carry variation, changing the effective dimensionality of the stimulus. Judgment errors were small, with numbers yielding the best performance; elements such as bars and pie slices were judged almost as accurately; disk elements were judged least accurately, but the magnitude of the errors was not large.  相似文献

As a consequence of the complexity of the iterative optimum seeking procedures used by practical nonmetric multidimensional scaling algorithms, many of their computational properties have not been well understood. In particular, the following questions are of interest: (a) from the user's point of view, are there significant differences between alternative available programs, (b) are suboptimal solutions frequently encountered, and how does this depend on the characteristics of the algorithm? Using Monte Carlo techniques to generate dissimilarity matrices with known underlying configurations, Kruskal's M-D-SCAL, Guttman-Lingoes' SSA-I, and Young-Torgerson's TORSCA-9 programs were compared. It was found: (a) that differences between the solutions obtained by the algorithms were typically so small as to be of little practical importance, (b) deviant solutions were occasionally produced by each of the algorithms, but most often by M-D-SCAL, and furthermore, most frequently in one dimension. The likelihood of being trapped in a nonoptimal position is reduced by a good choice of initial configuration, and also possibly by constructing the iterative process to favor the possibility of stepping over small local depressions when far from the location of the optimum. The conclusions of this study are based on a total of 2160 scaling solutions.  相似文献

Middle- and lower-class children who had been treated by E in a warm or aloof manner were given a discrimination learning task under one of six conditions forming a 3 × 2 design: three reinforcement types (Verbalintoned, Verbal-nonintoned, or Symbolic) and reinforcement for correct or incorrect responses. In accordance with Zigler's valence theory of social reinforcement, lower-class girls and middle-class children of both sexes tended to perform better when they had previously received warm treatment. No significant differences among the three types of reinforcers occurred in either SE group, thus failing to support the implications of several theories about the relative effectiveness of social and nonsocial reinforcers and tonality factors related to SES.  相似文献

Seventy-six young, male offenders, attending a Community Home School, were randomly assigned to social skills training (SST) incorporating training in basic and more complex interpersonal skills, attention placebo (APC) and no treatment control (NTC) groups. Within subject changes in specific social skills were monitored in the SST group using a multiple baseline design. The results showed that SST led to definite improvements in some but not all the basic skills, and that these improvements were maintained at 3-month follow-up. In a between groups design SST was found to be significantly superior to APC and NTC groups on the performance of basic skills at posttest. Although the SST group reported significantly less social problems on a social problems questionnaire after training, a similar, though lesser reduction was found for the APC group and the NTC group. On a staff questionnaire of social problems, and independent ratings of social skills, friendliness, anxiety and employability. social workers' ratings of work, school and family relationships, self-reported offending and police convictions, there was no evidence that SST was differentially more effective than the comparison groups. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms both of current research into SST and the treatment of delinquency.  相似文献

First, differences in attitudes and beliefs towards masculine and feminine roles as well as legal and social facts in the U.S. are presented. Due to women's and civil rights movements those differences are changing now. However, inequalities and barriers for changing are still not completely overcome, often referring to differences in temperament and motivation between men and women which are assumed to be based on biological and/or socializing factors. In the U.S. sample, sex differences emerged on the following variables: Marriage importance (F> M), Masculinity score for self (M > F), Femininity score for self (F > M), Femininity score for ideal man (F > M), Masculinity score for ideal women (F > M) and Competitiveness (M > F). Academic orientation also influences the Educational Aspirations and Expectations (college > technical) and the Masculinity score for the ideal woman (college > technical). Suggestions are given for future research work: finding techniques to decrease sex stereotypes and focusing research on the conditions which were responsible in the past for the traditional masculine and feminine roles in the American Society and how these roles no longer are appropriate.  相似文献

We tested the efficacy of two types of educational materials for genetic counseling: a traditional information brochure and one adding a role model story. Brochures were alternated weekly at a prenatal genetics center. Subjects were asked to read the brochure and fill out a questionnaire covering demographics and variables from the health belief model (impact, barriers, motivation, susceptibility, knowledge, severity). A group of 409 pregnant women and 251 male partners participated. Study design was quasiexperimental, using a post-test only comparison group. The brochure with modeling enhanced the perception of both risk and the severity of the disease and was inversely associated with the assessment of barriers, but did not directly impact on the decision to pursue testing; only 12% chose to be tested, with no significant differences between groups. While suggestive, the study is not confirmatory and should be repeated with a more heterogenous group of women.  相似文献

Fourteen musicians who reported a history of pain in the upper limb associated with the playing of their instruments were compared with a sample of pain-free musicians, matched for age, sex and musical instrument. Four tasks were presented in random order and included neutral, general stressor, personal stressor and pain stressor tasks. Ratings of stressfulness and recordings of skin conductance level confirmed the effectiveness of the experimental manipulations for both subject groups. No differences were found between groups or tasks for frontalis surface electromyograph (EMG) activity. Evidence was found, however, of EMG elevation in flexor and trapezius muscles on the pain side for the pain subjects, in response to the task involving recall of a pain experience. This elevation was not found for the pain-free controls or for other stressor tasks, although some elevation in response to the pain stressor task was found for pain subjects in the trapezius muscles of the non-pain side. The duration of return to baseline of EMG following the pain stressor task was found to be extended in pain subjects for the trapezius, but not for the flexor muscles of the pain side. The findings suggest that site-specific muscle hyper-reactivity may play a role in the development and maintenance of occupational upper limb pain in musicians.  相似文献
