Levels of arousal in high- and low-frequency gamblers

High-(N = 22) and low-(N = 22) frequency gamblers were subjected to provocation with gambling or neutral stimuli prior to playing a poker machine. All Ss used a minimum of AS$3 of their own money and played a machine currently in use in local clubs with a maximum major payout of AS$100. HR and subjective measures of arousal were taken throughout. Neither provocation condition resulted in changes from baseline arousal in either group. Playing was associated with increases in arousal in both groups, but significantly greater arousal was shown by high-frequency players.

Spatial properties of mechanisms for detection of moving dot targets in dynamic visual noise

The maximum displacement threshold for direction discrimination (dmax) was determined for single or paired dot targets moving discretely against a background of dynamic visual noise. dmax rose as the spatial density of noise was reduced, or when the interframe interval was decreased. dmax was greater for dot pairs than for single dots, and rose progressively as the distance between the dots was reduced. dmax was also greater if the orientation of the target dot pairs differed from the orientation of paired dots in the background noise. Dichoptic presentation of the target and background noise allowed the target to be detected with an accuracy that did not depend on displacement.     

Conducting a Pragmatic Trial in Integrated Primary Care: Key Decision Points and Considerations

Pragmatic trials testing the effectiveness of interventions under “real world” conditions help bridge the research-to-practice gap. Such trial designs are optimal for studying the impact of implementation efforts, such as the effectiveness of integrated behavioral health clinicians in primary care settings. Formal pragmatic trials conducted in integrated primary care settings are uncommon, making it difficult for researchers to anticipate the potential pitfalls associated with balancing scientific rigor with the demands of routine clinical practice. This paper is based on our experience conducting the first phase of a large, multisite, pragmatic clinical trial evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of behavioral health consultants treating patients with chronic pain using a manualized intervention, brief cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain (BCBT-CP). The paper highlights key choice points using the PRagmatic-Explanatory Continuum Indicator Summary (PRECIS-2) tool. We discuss the dilemmas of pragmatic research that we faced and offer recommendations for aspiring integrated primary care pragmatic trialists.
