This paper examines the importance of political knowledge in shaping accurate perceptions of the political world—specifically, how levels of general political knowledge influence the accuracy of specific political judgments, how those judgments might also be shaped by "wishful thinking," and how political knowledge attenuates the impact of wishful thinking on political judgments. Predictions of who would win the U.S. presidential election in 1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996, as surveyed in the National Election Studies conducted in those years, were used as a measure of the accuracy of political perceptions. Analysis of these data reveals that both political knowledge and wishful thinking are important determinants of the accuracy of people's perceptions; in addition, the impact of wishful thinking on perceptions is attenuated by political knowledge. 相似文献

We outline our central reasons for pursuing the project of equality studies and some of the thinking we have done within an
equality studies framework. We try to show that a multi-dimensional conceptual framework, applied to a set of key social contexts
and articulating the concerns of subordinate social groups, can be a fruitful way of putting the idea of equality into practice.
Finally, we address some central questions about how to bring about egalitarian social change.

Research has demonstrated that people automatically devote more attention to negative information than to positive information. The authors conducted 3 experiments to test whether this bias is attenuated by a person's affective context. Specifically, the authors primed participants with positive and negative information using traditional (e.g., subliminal semantic priming) and nontraditional (e.g., social interactions) means and measured the amount of attention they allocated to positive and negative information. With both event-related brain potentials (Experiment 1) and the Stroop task (Experiments 2 and 3), results suggest that the attention bias to negative information is attenuated or eliminated when positive constructs are made accessible. The implications of this result for other biases to negative information and for the self-reinforcing nature of emotional disorders are discussed. 相似文献

Manifestations of chronic shock and annihilation anxiety-including autistic defenses, chaotic relationships, disorganized attachment, split-off affective states, and vulnerability to disintegration--exist side by side with apparent ego strength and high functioning, even in nonabused patients. Chronic shock stemming from uncontained distress and failed dependency during childhood can persist throughout the lifespan, creating ripples of dysfunction that mask as character distortion and contribute to therapeutic impasse. Patients rely on omnipotent defenses to provide a sense of "having skin" in the face of the fear of breakdown, striving to avoid vulnerability, and trying to insulate themselves from shock experience. Although the relinquishment of autistic defenses and subsequent integration of disowned affect states are overwhelming and painful, patients can emerge from this process with significant shifts in intrapsychic, interpersonal, and existential/spiritual functioning. Clinical material from one psychodynamic psychotherapy group tracks the group process and growth trajectories of seven group members struggling with chronic shock. The ability to recognize subtle dissociative states is a valuable tool in the repertoire of the group psychotherapist. 相似文献

This study assessed whether a practice effect occurs across five serial administrations of the sensory organization test. Composite equilibrium scores and mean equilibrium scores from 30 healthy volunteers (M age=36.9, SD = 12.2 yr.) performing each of the six test conditions were examined using a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance. Analysis yielded a significant interaction between testing condition and time, as well as significant main effects for both condition and time. Pairwise comparisons showed significant differences among test conditions and the first and second times of test administration. Analysis of simple effects between the two administrations identified significant increases in composite equilibrium scores and mean equilibrium scores on two sway-referenced support surface conditions, vision removed and sway-referenced visual surround. An immediate increase in equilibrium scores suggests clinicians and researchers allow one pracatice trial before recording test scores for baseline measurements. 相似文献

Two hundred and one unemployed men and women participated in a cross‐sectional study that assessed self‐esteem, financial deprivation, number of alternate roles, and use of social support. Financial deprivation, alternate roles, and social support each had a main effect on self‐esteem. In addition, these variables interacted with gender to affect self‐esteem. Specifically, financial deprivation had a greater negative association with self‐esteem in men as compared with women. In contrast, alternate roles and social support had a stronger positive relationship to self‐esteem in women than in men. The incorporation of these findings into intervention programs for unemployed persons is discussed. 相似文献

Two studies were designed to examine the impact of the false consensus effect on behavior (FCE; Ross, Greene, & House, 1977).
False consensus is a form of social projection whereby individuals overestimate the degree to which others share their characteristics
or beliefs. In a modified test of the theory of reasoned action, Study 1 demonstrated that the FCE independently predicts
behavioral intentions regarding important social issues in a sample comprised of 205 college students. Further, results indicated
that self-monitoring moderates the extent to which the FCE predicts behavioral intentions (specifically, as hypothesized,
the FCE is a stronger predictor of behavior for high self-monitors). Because of the prevalence of the FCE among college students
regarding potentially harmful social behaviors, Study 2 was designed to eliminate the FCE by differentially presenting students
(N = 280) with alternative viewpoints regarding various issues. Presenting both sides of an argument using video-based stimuli
effectively reduced the FCE. Recommendations for interventions that effectively promote beneficial social norms are discussed. 相似文献

Knowing what skills underlie college success can allow students, teachers, and universities to identify and to help at‐risk students. One skill that may underlie success across a variety of subject areas is structure building, the ability to create mental representations of narratives (Gernsbacher, Varner, & Faust, 1990 ). We tested if individual differences in structure‐building ability predicted success in two college classes: introductory to psychology and introductory biology. In both cases, structure building predicted success. This effect was robust, with structure building explaining variance in course grades even after accounting for high school GPA and SAT scores (in the psychology course) or a measure of domain knowledge (in the biology course). The results support the claim that structure building is an important individual difference, one that is associated with learning in different domains. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
