Statistical learning has been widely proposed as a mechanism by which observers learn to decompose complex sensory scenes. To determine how robust statistical learning is, we investigated the impact of attention and perceptual grouping on statistical learning of visual shapes. Observers were presented with stimuli containing two shapes that were either connected by a bar or unconnected. When observers were required to attend to both locations at which shapes were presented, the degree of statistical learning was unaffected by whether the shapes were connected or not. However, when observers were required to attend to just one of the shapes' locations, statistical learning was observed only when the shapes were connected. These results demonstrate that visual statistical learning is not just a passive process. It can be modulated by both attention and connectedness, and in natural scenes these factors may constrain the role of stimulus statistics in learning. 相似文献

This study explores the relation between girls' social adjustment and their use of defense mechanisms. We recruited girls representing four sociometric status classifications (rejected, neglected, average, and popular), and assessed their use of defense mechanisms both before and after encountering a peer rejection experience in the laboratory. We hypothesized that increasing degrees of social maladjustment would be associated with higher levels of defense use, particularly after encountering a rejection experience. Our results supported these hypotheses. There was a significant negative relationship between social adjustment and defense use, both prior to and immediately following the rejection experience. Categorical analyses revealed that rejected and neglected girls used more defenses following the rejection experience than did popular and average girls. 相似文献

Subjects (N = 252, college students) rehearsed a 30-item free-recall list, or rested for one of three intervals (32, 42 or 54 sec), on the first, third, or ninth study trial. At the conclusion of the interval, subjects made an absolute judgement of interval duration. Half the subjects were informed that this time judgement would be required prior to the interval (prospective), and the remainder were not informed of the required time judgement until after the interval (retrospective). As the number of previous trials increased, judged time (1) increased linearly in the prospective-rehearsal group, (2) decreased linearly in the retrospective-rehearsal group, and (3) had no effect on the nonrehearsal groups. Prospective judgements were greater than retrospective. Social anxiety disorder (SAD) tends to emerge during the early teenage years and is particularly refractory to change even when standard evidence-based CBT treatments are delivered. Efforts have been made to develop novel, mechanistic-driven interventions for this disorder. In the present study, we examined Attention Bias Modification Treatment (ABMT) for youth with SAD. Participants were 58 adolescents (mean age = 14.29 years) who met diagnostic criteria for SAD and who were randomized to ABMT or a placebo control condition, Attention Control Training (ACT). We predicted that ABMT would result in greater changes in both threat biases and social anxiety symptoms. We also explored potential moderators of change including the severity of social anxiety symptoms, the level of threat bias at pretreatment, and the degree of temperament-defined attention control. Contrary to our hypotheses, changes in attention bias were not observed in either condition, changes in social anxiety symptoms and diagnosis were small, and significant differences were not observed between the ABMT and ACT conditions. Little support for the proposed moderators was obtained. Reasons for our failure to find support for ABMT and its potential moderators are explored and recommendations for changes in the ABMT paradigm are suggested. 相似文献

Bilingualism research has established language non-selective lexical access in comprehension. However, the evidence for such an effect in production remains sparse and its neural time-course has not yet been investigated. We demonstrate that German-English bilinguals performing a simple picture-naming task exclusively in English spontaneously access the phonological form of –unproduced– German words. Participants were asked to produce English adjective-noun sequences describing the colour and identity of familiar objects presented as line drawings. We associated adjective and picture names such that their onsets phonologically overlapped in English (e.g., green goat), in German through translation (e.g., blue flower – ‘blaue Blume’), or in neither language. As expected, phonological priming in English modulated event-related brain potentials over the frontocentral scalp region from around 440 ms after picture onset. Phonological priming in German was detectable even earlier, from 300 ms, even though German was never produced and in the absence of an interaction between language and phonological repetition priming at any point in time. Overall, these results establish the existence of non-selective access to phonological representations of the two languages in the domain of speech production. 相似文献

Two experiments investigate whether native speakers of French can use a noun’s phonological ending to retrieve its gender
and that of a gender-marked element. In Experiment 1, participants performed a gender decision task on the noun’s gender-marked
determiner for auditorily presented nouns. Noun endings with high predictive values were selected. The noun stimuli could
either belong to the gender class predicted by their ending (congruent) or they could belong to the gender class that was
different from the predicted gender (incongruent). Gender decisions were made significantly faster for congruent nouns than
for incongruent nouns, relative to a (lexical decision) baseline task. In Experiment 2, participants named pictures of the
same materials as used in Experiment 1 with noun phrases consisting of a gender-marked determiner, a gender-marked adjective
and a noun. In this Experiment, no effect of congruency, relative to a (bare noun naming) baseline task, was observed. Thus,
the results show an effect of phonological information on the retrieval of gender-marked elements in spoken word recognition,

This paper explores why people identify with social groups and what this identification signifies for their sense of self,
status in society and intergroup conflict. We describe various theories of social identity to elucidate ways in which individuals
can negotiate their different social identities, and what this means for intergroup relations. We consider the implications
for both majority and minority group members, and those from high and low status groups. We show that social identification
is an essential part of an individual’s social existence, and that such identification is inextricably related to intergroup
conflict. While overarching common identities have been hailed as a possible panacea for conflict, we demonstrate that such
identities have differential effects for minority and majority group members. There is a serious tension between the assimilationist
preference that the majority wishes for minority members to adopt, and the integrationist position that the minority group
themselves prefer. We conclude with a call to focus research efforts on how to balance the needs of the many and the few in
