The purpose of this study was to evaluate a culturally adapted cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for major depression among Hispanics in primary care. Cultural adaptations were applied based on a range of cultural considerations described in the literature. Fifteen Hispanic primary care patients with major depression were enrolled. All participants received the 12-session intervention and completed baseline, posttreatment, and 6-month follow-up assessments. Four participants (27%) dropped out of the treatment. Analyses focused on changes from baseline functioning using a Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results showed significant reductions in depressive, anxious, and somatic symptoms at posttreatment and 6-month follow-up. Mean reduction of depressive symptoms at posttreatment was 57%. Findings of acceptable treatment retention rates and clinically meaningful reductions in depressive symptoms showed promise for this intervention to treat Hispanics with major depression. Future studies should conduct a more rigorously controlled evaluation of this intervention. 相似文献

Philosophical thinking, in the historically original sense, is simply the human mind in operation, unaided by anything supernatural
and unfettered by any human authority or any procedure for reaching some pre-given end. This means that “philosophy” originally
included far more than it does now, including all the natural sciences, as well as rational reflection on society, history,
and art. What this means for us now is that philosophy must be an essentially outward-facing discipline, open to others. Most
importantly, it needs now to be open to the sciences, to practical social reflection, and to its own history. But what philosophy
brings to all its reflections is above all a spirit of critical reflection, respect for evidence and argument, and a ruthless
honesty that demands of people that they form their beliefs and views of life according to the best reasons and information
they have, rather than forming their views according to their wishes or prejudices, or letting them be dictated by authorities
or social traditions. In this sense, we are living in an unphilosophical, or even anti-philosophical, age, but this makes

Previous research has shown that phonetic categories have a graded internal structure that is highly dependent on acoustic-phonetic contextual factors, such as speaking rate; these factors alter not only the location of phonetic category boundaries, but also the location of a category’s best exemplars. The purpose of the present investigation, which focused on the voiceless category as specified by voice onset time (VOT), was to determine whether a higher order linguistic contextual factor, lexical status, which is known to alter the location of the voiced—voiceless phonetic category boundary, also alters the location of the best exemplars of the voiceless category. The results indicated that lexical status has a more limited and qualitatively different effect on the category’s best exemplars than does the acousticphonetic factor of speaking rate. This dissociation is discussed in terms of a production-based account in which perceived best exemplars of a category track contextual variation in speech production. 相似文献

The authors evaluate a mapping of Rescorla and Wagner's (1972) behavioral model of classical conditioning onto the cerebellar substrates for motor reflex learning and illustrate how the limitations of the Rescorla-Wagner model are just as useful as its successes for guiding the development of new psychobiological theories of learning. They postulate that the inhibitory pathway that returns conditioned response information from the cerebellar interpositus nucleus back to the inferior olive is the neural basis for the error correction learning proposed by Rescorla and Wagner (Gluck, Myers, & Thompson, 1994; Thompson, 1986). The authors' cerebellar model expects that behavioral processes described by the Rescorla-Wagner model will be localized within the cerebellum and related brain stem structures, whereas behavioral processes beyond the scope of the Rescorla-Wagner model will depend on extracerebellar structures such as the hippocampus and related cortical regions. Simulations presented here support both implications. Several novel implications of the authors' cerebellar error-correcting model are described including a recent empirical study by Kim, Krupa, and Thompson (1998), who verified that suppressing the putative error correction pathway should interfere with the Kamin (1969) blocking effect, a behavioral manifestation of error correction learning. The authors also discuss the model's implications for understanding the limits of cerebellar contributions to associative learning and how this informs our understanding of hippocampal function in conditioning. This leads to a more integrative view of the neural substrates of conditioning in which the authors' real-time circuit-level model of the cerebellum can be viewed as a generalization of the long-term memory module of Gluck and Myers' (1993) trial-level theory of cerebellar-hippocampal interaction in motor conditioning. 相似文献
