Sustained behavioral contrast in children

Children were exposed to a multiple schedule involving equal variable-interval schedules in each of two components and a multiple schedule involving a variable-interval schedule in one component and an extinction schedule in the other. Response rates were equal in both components when each involved a variable-interval schedule. Response rates differed in the two components of the multiple variable-interval extinction schedule. Response rates were higher in the variable-interval schedule when the accompanying schedule was extinction than when it was variable interval. The increase in response rate in the variable-interval component, simultaneous with the decrease in response rate in the extinction component, illustrated sustained behavioral contrast, and was the first evidence of this phenomenon in children.     

Fu tao: guidance in Taiwan seeks a value orientation

The guidance movement in Taiwan, only 20 years old, has paralleled ours in developing from vocational-educational advisement toward personal counseling. There is a basic conflict between traditional Chinese culture grounded in Confucian ideals and rules of behavior, and the highly individualized value orientation on which the counseling movement is predicated. This conflict leads Chinese guidance workers to search their tradition for a more appropriate balance between individual freedom and social responsibility. This article is a cross-cultural comparison exploring some critical implications for the value orientation of our Western democratic society and the counseling movement.     

An electronic audio switch

This article describes an electronic switch that allows presentation of sine wave stimuli without the often undesirable transient thump, thud, or click usually caused by ordinary electromechanical switches.     

Redistributing control between the elements of a compound stimulus

Twenty-eight pigeons were given discrimination training. Four groups were run in which for 0, 2, 4 and 9 sessions of training colour was an irrelevant cue and tone was relevant. Generalization tests were given in extinction; the training colour (C₁) and another colour (C₂) were presented with tone (T) and noise (N). Responding to these four stimulus combinations, TC₁, TC₂, NC₁ and NC₂, allowed the assessment of control by colour and tone. A reduction of control by colour and an increase in control by tone were found to be positively related to the amount of training with colour irrelevant. Tests showed a strong inverse relationship between control by colour and tone.

Signal probability and spatial location as possible bases for increased selectivity in noise

It was previously found that noise increased both performance on a primary tracking task and the detection of centrally located signals in a secondary multi-source monitoring task. The present experiment examines the effect of changing the distribution of signals across the monitoring display. When equal numbers are seen at all locations there is no differential effect of noise for central and peripheral locations. Such an effect only occurs when central signals are seen to have greater probability. This result points to the selectivity effect in noise being a function of task priorities and not of physical location.     

The elimination of interfering response patterns in lever-press avoidance situations

Lever holding into shock and short-latency responses to shock onset are two response patterns that interfere with avoidance acquisition in free-operant and discriminated avoidance situations. In an attempt to eliminate these patterns, an additional timer disabled the lever for a period slightly longer than shock duration. A free-operant avoidance schedule with a warning stimulus, but without the additional timer, constituted the control condition. The lever-disabling timer was turned on by different events in two experimental conditions: (a) release of the lever at the onset of shock, (b) shock onset. Interfering responses diminished most rapidly, and efficient avoidance behavior appeared earliest, when the lever-disabling timer was turned on by shock onset.
