In Memory: Rene A. Ruiz

The life and professional contributions of Rene A. Ruiz are remembered by family, friends, and colleagues. Ruiz's trailblazing work on Hispanic issues in counseling and psychology places him among the ranks of the true pioneers in the field. His career as a counselor, teacher, writer, and researcher spanned three decades prior to his untimely death in 1982. On December 13, 1982, a heart attack claimed the life of Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences Book Review Editor Rene A. Ruiz at the young age of 53. His death was unexpected as he was in good health. With his death, his friends have lost a witty and charming man of high ideals and moral integrity. (Padilla, 1983, p. 137)     

A Case for Uncertainty in Career Counseling

This article suggests that an important aspect of the career decision-making process is the awareness that uncertainty (i.e., “1 don't know”) is normal, natural, and most likely unavoidable. The essential message of this article is that it is as useful, and even vocationally mature, to be both certain and uncertain about making a career decision.

GRIEVANCES: A REVIEW OF RESEARCH AND PRACTICE

Behavioral and industrial relations literature on grievances were reviewed. As a result, serious methodological, theoretical, and ethical questions were raised. Fundamental research is required to establish the reliability of grievance phenomena. Further, the use of grievance data as criteria is dubious because of conceptual problems of deficiency and contamination. Given existing threats to traditional grievance systems, basic research, especially program evaluation, on proposed structural and behavior variants of grievance procedures is necessary.     

Error Rates on Two Forms of the Self-Directed Search and Satisfaction With the Results

The number and type of scoring errors made on Holland's Self-Directed Search-R (SDS-R) are examined. Participants were high school juniors and seniors. The results indicate that although some errors were made, the SDS-R was perceived as a useful career assessment tool. Implications of the results are also discussed.
