Group psychotherapy: being and becoming

This basic model of group therapy highlights marked differences from individual therapy and illustrates the complexity of treatment planning. As human needs today are often shunted, group therapists respond by absorbing experiential-type innovations and by extending the boundaries of theory and application. An attempt at enriching and integrating group methods gives rise to Theme-Centered Interactional Therapy, the advantages of which are discussed. This new approach has relevance to group counseling.     

Liberal vs Radical Feminism Revisited

ABSTRACT This essay considers the movement away from a feminism based upon liberal political principles, such as John Stuart Mill espoused, and towards a radical feminism which seeks to build upon more recent explorations of psychology, biology and sexuality. It argues that some of these moves are philosophically suspect and that liberal feminism can accommodate the more substantial elements in these radical lines of thought.     

Dimensions of the perception of art: verbal scales and similarity judgements

Abstract.— An INDSCAL analysis was performed on subjects' similarity judgements of all pairs of 12 landscape paintings. Three principal INDSCAL dimensions were identified by analysing responses to 24 unidimensional rating scales derived from previous experiments. The present findings, together with those of previously published studies, suggest that three of the principal dimensions of perception of art appear to be (1) Hedonic-Representational, (2) Clarity, (3) A Dynamic factor involving activity, balance and symmetry. It is suggested that although Complexity may be an important factor influencing responses to simple stimuli, its rôle in the perception of paintings is small, and has frequently been over-emphasised.     

Genetic and environmental influences on adult attachment styles

The heritability of adult attachment styles as measured by the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ) was estimated on data from a volunteer general population sample of 220 adult twin pairs (116 monozygotic pairs. 104 dizygotic pairs). Additive genetic effects accounted for 37%, 43%, and 25% of the variance in the secure, fearful, and preoccupied adult attachment styles, respectively, but none of the variance in the dismissing style. Nonshared environmental influences accounted for the majority of the variance in all styles: 63% secure, 57% fearful, 75% preoccupied, and 71% dismissing. Shared environmental effects were negligible for all styles except dismissing (29%).
