Working from a naïve‐realist perspective, I examine first‐person knowledge of one's perceptual experience. I outline a naive‐realist theory of how subjects acquire knowledge of the nature of their experiences, and I argue that naive realism is compatible with moderate, substantial forms of first‐person privileged access. A more general moral of my paper is that treating “success” states like seeing as genuine mental states does not break up the dynamics that many philosophers expect from the phenomenon of knowledge of the mind.  相似文献

Observers pointing to a target viewed directly may elevate their fingertip close to the line of sight. However, pointing blindfolded, after viewing the target, they may pivot lower, from the shoulder, aligning the arm with the target as if reaching to the target. Indeed, in Experiment 1 participants elevated their arms more in visually monitored than blindfolded pointing. In Experiment 2, pointing to a visible target they elevated a short pointer more than a long one, raising its tip to the line of sight. In Experiment 3, the Experimenter aligned the participant's arm with the target. Participants judged they were pointing below a visually monitored target. In Experiment 4, participants viewing another person pointing, eyes-open or eyes-closed, judged the target was aligned with the pointing arm. In Experiment 5, participants viewed their arm and the target via a mirror and posed their arm so that it was aligned with the target. Arm elevation was higher in pointing directly.  相似文献

Objectives: To use the Theory of Planned Behaviour to explore factors associated with performing skin care behaviors and the occurrence of pressure sores in people with spinal cord injury. Design: A within-group cross-sectional design was used to assess 59 people with spinal cord injury living in the community. Of these, 17 participants returned a repeat assessment allowing a longitudinal examination of the relationship between intention and actual behaviour. Methods: A measure was developed in accordance with the Theory of Planned Behaviour guidelines through interviews with people with spinal cord injury. Measures of mood and knowledge of skin care behaviour were also included. Results: The Theory of Planned Behaviour components, mood and knowledge of skin behaviours predicted intention, skin care behaviour and occurrence of pressure sores. Knowledge of skin care was negatively correlated with occurrence of pressure sores (r=−.38, p < .01). Indirect perceived control was a particularly important predictor of pressure relief, accounting for 24% of the variance. Conclusions: Psychosocial factors, including the Theory of Planned Behaviour components, predicted skin care behaviours and the occurrence of pressure sores. These findings provide empirical support for the Theory of Planned Behaviour. The study also carries clinical implications for skin care education for people with SCI and their families.  相似文献

This paper examines the use of self‐review to debias recency. Recency is found in the ‘going concern’ judgments of staff auditors, but is successfully eliminated by the auditor's use of a simple self‐review technique that would be extremely easy to implement in audit practice. Auditors who self‐review are also less inclined to make audit report choices that are inconsistent with their going concern judgments. These results are important because the judgments of staff auditors often determine the type and extent of documentation in audit workpapers and serve as preliminary inputs for senior auditors' judgments and choices. If staff auditors' judgments are affected by recency, the impact of this bias may be impounded in the ultimate judgments and choices of senior auditors. Since biased judgments can expose auditors to significant costs involving extended audit procedures, legal liability and diminished reputation, simple debiasing techniques that reduce this exposure are valuable. Research has documented elevated levels of depression and suicide in the spinal cord injured (SCI) population, with the majority of suicide attempts occurring within 12 months of injury onset. Social support has been linked with depression and suicidal intent, and this study aimed to determine the impact of the quality and quantity of social support on levels of depression and hopelessness, an indirect indicator of suicide risk in the SCI population. Fifty-three individuals with traumatic SCI at Week 6 of their rehabilitation, and 42 at Week 18, with an approximate male to female ratio of 4:1, completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), and Social Support Questionnaire. Stepwise multiple regression analyses revealed that high quality of social support was associated with low hopelessness and depression scores, being more pronounced at Week 18 postinjury. The impact of social support on psychological well-being demonstrates the importance of fostering and integrating social support in rehabilitation following spinal cord injury.  相似文献

DAngiulli et al (1998 Scandinavian Journal of Psychology 39 187-190) found blind and sighted (blindfolded) children identified common objects in raised-outline drawings explored haptically, and corrected themselves without feedback. The self-correction suggests that participants can assess the extent to which the referents they suggest as possible identifications fit the haptic pictures. Indeed, when we asked subjects to identify haptic pictures, and to judge how well the referents they mentioned fitted the pictures, their fit judgments predicted the accuracy of their suggestions. Also, when one group of subjects offered the suggestions and another group assessed the fit of the suggestions to the pictures, the fit judgments predicted the accuracy of the suggestions. Further, good fit predicted successful recognition memory. In addition, both high and low fit judgments were made confidently, so the range of confidence judgments was smaller than the range of fit judgments. Finally, visual judgments of fit by one group predicted the level of success of the suggestions from another (haptic) group. In sum, subjects assess their suggested identifications appropriately, most likely on the basis of object shape criteria, outlined surface edges, and use of a vantage point.  相似文献

Exclusive use of the clinical model in school psychology is impractical. This is discussed in terms of incidence of adjustment problems, psychologist-student ratios, and undesirable side effects that have resulted from sole use of the clinical model. Reasons for implementing developmental and preventive mental health programs in the schools are discussed, and examples of such programs are presented. Some alternatives to the usual ways of handling the remediation of currently existing adjustment problems are suggested.  相似文献

What is the relation between metaphors and similes? Aristotle's “comparison theory” holds that metaphors are elliptical similes: “Sam is a pig” is simply a short form of “Sam is like a pig.” In contrast, it has been suggested that metaphors cannot be elliptical similes because metaphors are “stronger” than similes. We know metaphors are stronger, it is argued, because of examples involving corrections, such as “Peter is not just like a rock, he is a rock.” The argument from corrections can be challenged on logical and empirical grounds. The ability to correct a simile with a metaphor does not entail that metaphors are stronger than similes when used on their own, which is likely to be the most frequent case. Although four experiments indicate that when corrections are involved, metaphors are indeed stronger than similes in several respects, alas a further four experiments indicate that these differences are largely eliminated when metaphors and similes are used on their own. We note that this pattern of results is consistent with the comparison theory, and we offer an explanation of the effects of corrections.  相似文献

Patients with psychiatric catatonias vs those with medical catatonias may differ in catatonic phenomenology. To determine if these could be distinguished, the following methods were used: 1) a review of the literature; 2) a chart review; and 3) a prospective series. The literature review of 467 reports of medical catatonias yielded 240 cases that met research criteria. A chart review of 47 episodes of catatonia revealed a higher frequency of negativism in patients with medical catatonias. Prospective data obtained from rating scales revealed an increased frequency of echophenomena in patients with medical catatonias; however, no discriminate pattern of catatonic signs for medical catatonias arose. Overall, catatonic signs appear to share a similar distribution. These findings suggest that psychiatric and medical catatonias are indistinguishable based upon catatonic sign.  相似文献

Gaia, a totally blind girl, was asked to make raised-line drawings. Gaia's vision at best was peripheral. She draws out of interest, and has drawn since preschool with encouragement from her mother. She was asked to draw objects and scenes involving depth from a vantage point, eg a table from below, two cars (one behind the other), and two parallel rows of apples (receding from her, on a table top). Gaia represented space in her drawings using T-junctions for overlap, height in the picture plane, parallel projection, and inverse projection. That is, Gaia uses features of systems common in sighted children's drawings. The development of drawing in blind and sighted children may be similar in good measure because haptics provides access to many of the same spatial principles as vision.  相似文献
