The case of a 57-year-old congenitally deaf man who suffered a cerebral vascular accident is presented. Resultant symptomatology included right hemiplegia and aphasia. The authors' findings and conclusions concur with a small, but slowly growing, body of literature which suggests that the fundamental linguistic processes are the same for the congenitally deaf and for the normal hearing population.  相似文献

Predictions made from the learned-helplessness model received support in three experiments. The effects of response-outcome independence, as well as immunization and reversibility of such effects were demonstrated with human subjects. It was also demonstrated that differences in locus of control, sex and attribution, influenced those results. Furthermore, the effects of modeling and the use of cognitive tasks for both pretreatment and reversibility were examined.  相似文献

Academic behaviors can be enhanced through the manipulation of either consequent or antecedent stimuli. In this study, we evaluated the effects of manipulating two antecedent stimulus events with respect to oral reading errors and self-corrections of four mentally retarded children. Using an alternating treatments design, the effects of previewing the target text and previewing an unrelated text were evaluated against no-previewing. In the first previewing condition, the teacher discussed the target text with the children before they were required to read it orally. The same procedure was used in the other previewing condition but with the provision that an unrelated text was previewed. Oral reading errors decreased and self-corrections increased when the children previewed the target text with their teacher before reading it orally. No changes were observed as a result of implementing the other two procedures, previewing an unrelated text and no-previewing. The results, which were consistent across all four children, showed that reading proficiency can be increased by manipulating antecedent stimulus events prior to oral reading.  相似文献

Eating at fast-food restaurants is becoming increasingly popular. However, little research has been conducted examining the determinants of this behavior. A subjective probability model and Fishbein's behavioral intention model were used to examine this behavior. Both models were significant predictors of the individual's intention to eat at these restaurants and both were used to identify psychologically important beliefs that determine this behavior. Intention was found to be a significant and sufficient predictor of behavior. Finally, the use of these findings for both applied and basic researchers is presented.  相似文献

These studies continue the exploration of variables related to a person's use of the mental illness categorization. The central concern in the present studies was the effect of perceived variation in a target person's level of involvement in a social situation. While a low level of involvement, as portrayed in videotaped scenarios, prompts attribution of mental illness, other features of implicit personality theories also relate to greater or lesser attribution of mental illness. Those participants who gave evidence of having attributed lower levels of involvement, regardless of filmed information, also attributed higher levels of mental illness. Social workers, compared to general population participants, attributed higher levels of mental illness at all levels of target involvement. We discuss the implications of these findings for dissemination and assignment of the mentally ill role.  相似文献

The capacity for formulating moral judgments shown by 20 emotionally disturbed, cognitively delayed adolescents was related to their social behaviors as observed in a classroom situation. Adolescents reported by their teachers to be shy and submissive were less capable of reasoning about moral issues than were adolescents who were seen as more assertive and socially engaged. The level of moral judgment was not a function of intelligence or ability to understand concrete operations. The implication that social engagement is a critical determinant of moral judgment for these adolescents is discussed.  相似文献

Deficiencies in basic trust frequently undermine the efficacy of group therapy in multiracial and multicultural groups. It is necessary to distinguish trust deficits caused by individual psychopathology, societal attitudes (cultural pathology), or a combination of both. A typology for classifying self-disclosure problems in multicultural and multiracial groups is presented, and illustrated with case material: Mode A, Good enough trust, allows patient self-disclosure in multicultural groups; Mode B, Low level of cultural paranoia and high level of functional paranoia; Mode C, Culturally paranoid individual can self-disclose in culturally homogeneous group but mistrusts outsiders; Mode D, Confluent paranoid has high levels of both functional and cultural paranoia. For Modes C and D, it is crucial that experiences of bias be acknowledged and empathized with first before patients will be able to achieve good enough trust to risk self-disclosure. The ethnic composition of the group must be attended to in the placement of these patients. Hospital (inpatient) groups are especially likely to have problems with basic trust. The role of the leader in demonstrating empathy, tolerance, racial sensitivity, and appropriate self-disclosure is emphasized. Cultural awareness training, a personal group therapy experience for the therapist, and the use of co-therapists are recommended as ways of minimizing negative countertransference or cultural bias on the part of the leader.  相似文献

Two experiments using a probe-RT paradigm showed that partial information about the size of a stimulus can influence response processes before complete size information is available. Contrary to the asynchronous discrete coding model, these results suggest that the perceptual system may transmit to the response system information that only partially specifies a single stimulus attribute. In combination with previous findings, these results also suggest that there are at least two dissociable forms of selective preparation for a given response.  相似文献

Staff assumptions and program practices in two models of residential care for male adolescent offenders were compared. Group care settings had from 6 to 15 youths in residence and used peer-mediated treatments. Treatment Foster Care settings had one youngster placed in each home and treatments were adult-mediated. Results showed that group care and Treatment Foster Care program models differed on staff assumptions about therapeutic mechanisms of change, and different patterns of daily program practices were found.  相似文献

This study compared differing predictions about the relationship between subjects' style or preference for general cognitive complexity and the role of incongruity and complexity on the perception of humor. The subjects, all adult females, found simpler, less incongruous cartoons to be most humorous. Regardless of their general preference for cognitive complexity, ease of information processing seemed directly related to the perception of humor.  相似文献
