Categorization research typically assumes that the cognitive system has access to a (more or less noisy) representation of the absolute magnitudes of the properties of stimuli and that this information is used in reaching a categorization decision. However, research on identification of simple perceptual stimuli suggests that people have very poor representations of absolute magnitude information and that judgments about absolute magnitude are strongly influenced by preceding material. The experiments presented here investigate such sequence effects in categorization tasks. Strong sequence effects were found. Classification of a borderline stimulus was more accurate when preceded by a distant member of the opposite category than by a distant member of the same category. It is argued that this category contrast effect cannot be accounted for by extant exemplar or decision-bound models of categorization. The effect suggests the use of relative magnitude information in categorization. A memory and contrast model illustrates how relative magnitude information may be used in categorization.

Movement recall was investigated in relation to the sensory processes involved in a triangle drawing task.Forty subjects in two groups, one with and one without visual feedback, performed a recall task involving movements of their index finger. All subjects attended different experimental sessions in which (1) all proprioceptive feedback was eliminated by the ischaemic block technique, (2) muscle spindle feedback was distorted by vibration of the muscles and tendons involved in the movement, and (3) proprioceptive feedback was normal.Within each session subjects were required firstly to recall triangular movements made for them passively by the experimenter, and secondly, to recall movements they had made actively. Results indicated comparable accuracy in recall of active movements in all conditions, and a decrement in passive recall dependent on the availability of the alternative sources of feedback. The results indicated a process of integrated contribution of all inputs to the perception of movement; redundancy in information when all channels are available; and a role of corollary discharge in recall of movements.

Reaction time techniques were used to examine the role of attention in the construction and maintenance of expectancies. In Experiment I, a primed letter matching task, expectancies were observed through a delay (cost) in responding to misprimed letter arrays. A secondary probe task was interpolated between prime and array letters on some of the trials, with attentional demands inferred from delayed responding to probes. By varying the amount of time between onset of the prime and either a probe or letter array, it was found that there is attentional involvement (as reflected in probe inhibition) prior to the observation of expectancies (as reflected in letter matching cost). It was also found that the interpolation of an attention-demanding probe task did not entirely disrupt primed expectancies. Experiment II found that an expectancy persists even when an interpolated distractor task signals that the expectancy is no longer valid. These expectancies were found to decay as a function of time. The implications of these results for attention allocation and memory activation views of expectancy were discussed.

Infants were tested in three experiments to study the development of sensitivity to information for impending collision and to investigate the hypothesis that postural changes of very young infants in response to an approaching object are of a tracking rather than of a defensive nature. Experiment 1 involved the presentation of three types of shadow projection displays, specifying (1) collision, (2) noncollision, and (3) a nonexpanding rising contour, to infants from 1 to 9 months of age. Avoidance of collision appears to be absent in 1- to 2-month-olds, begins to develop in 4- to 6-month-olds, and is present in 8- to 9-month-old infants. In Experiment 2, 1- to 2-month-old infants were presented with optical expansion patterns which specified collision and noncollision. The top contour of these displays stayed at eye level. No significant difference was observed between reaction to the collision and the noncollision displays, suggesting that the young infants were tracking the displays and not attempting to avoid collision. Experiment 3 was designed to determine whether an approaching real object might elicit an avoidance response in infants not sensitive to an optical display specifying collision. No evidence of avoidance behavior was observed in the 1- to 2-month-olds; however, avoidance, as indexed by blinking, does appear to be present at 4 months of age.

Significance tests are developed for evaluating the absolute invariance of the dominance and composition scales presented in a previous paper [Bechtel, 1967]. These tests derive from the multivariate normality of the estimated scale values—this multinormality stemming from that of the observations upon which these estimated scale parameters are based. The scales compared by means of the present techniques will typically be constructed under distinct experimental conditions, which may take the concrete form of treatments, occasions, individuals, or groups. Thus the present tests possess a wide range of applicability including various experimental designs in which scale configuration is the dependent variable. Illustrative data are used in statistically comparing the scale structures of two different individuals. This research was supported in part by National Institutes of Health Grant MH-04439-06. “High-anxiety” and “low-anxiety” subjects, selected for extreme scores on the Taylor Anxiety Scale, learned a list of paired-associate nonsense syllables in the belief that they were undergoing an intelligence test. Both groups were then given a second list of paired associates to learn, the stimulus-items being the same as those of the first list but the responses being changed. Before the presentation of the second list, half the subjects in each group were given anxiety-increasing instructions and the remaining half were given reassuring instructions.

The results verified two predictions made from Hull's behaviour theory, using the concept of fear or anxiety as a secondary drive:—“high anxiety” subjects took more trials to master the second learning task than “low-anxiety” subjects; and there was a significant interaction between initial anxiety-level and type of instructions, such that “high-anxiety” subjects who received drive-increasing instructions had a worse performance in the second part than all other sub-groups. There was no indication that “low-anxiety” subjects were significantly affected by the type of instructions received. The “high-anxiety” group had greater difficulty than the “low-anxiety” group in learning the first list, but the difference was non-significant.
