Heart rate (HR), operant key pressing, and urinary 11-hydroxycorticosteroids (11-OH-CS) were recorded while dogs were subjected to various aversive conditioning schedules over a six-month period. The schedules consisted of Sidman avoidance, followed by a Sidman schedule which paired unavoidable shocks (US) with offset of seven discrete conditioned stimuli (CS). Introduction of the Sidman avoidance schedule led to an increase in HR. Changes in the experimental schedule always results in an increase in urinary 11-OH-CS. Neither HR nor urinary 11-OH-CS were correlated with rate of operant key pressing. Differences in the dependent variables reflected the different topological characteristics of the dogs studied. This study demonstrated: (a) a causal independence of physiological and behavioral responses conditioned to the same stimulus complex, and (b) that longterm increases in HR can be maintained if the experimental situation is manipulated to maintain the fear eliciting characteristics of the conditioning situation.  相似文献

The nature of psychological measurements in relation to mathematical structures and representations is examined. Some very general notions concerning algebras and systems are introduced and applied to physical and number systems, and to measurement theory. It is shown that the classical intensive and extensive dimensions of measurements with their respective ordinal and additive scales are not adequate to describe physical events without the introduction of the notions of dimensional units and of dimensional homogeneity. It is also shown that in the absence of these notions, the resulting systems of magnitudes have only a very restricted kind of isomorphism with the real number system, and hence have little or no mathematical representations. An alternative in the form of an extended theory of measurements is developed. A third dimension of measurement, the supra-extensive dimension, is introduced; and a new scale, the multiplicative scale, is associated with it. It is shown that supra-extensive magnitudes do constitute systems isomorphic with the system of real numbers and that they alone can be given mathematical representations. Physical quantities are supra-extensive magnitudes. In contrast, to date, psychological quantities are either intensive or extensive, but never of the third kind. This, it is felt, is the reason why mathematical representations have been few and without success in psychology as contrasted to the physical sciences. In particular, the Weber-Fechner relation is examined and shown to be invalid in two respects. It is concluded that the construction of multiplicative scales in psychology, or the equivalent use of dimensional analysis, alone will enable the development of fruitful mathematical theories in this area of investigation. The editors of this journal should perhaps point out that unanimous agreement with the arguments and points of view expressed in this article is not anticipated. They believe, however, that its publication may stimulate needed thinking and clarification of problems basic to psychological measurement and thus serve the purpose for which the journal was founded.  相似文献

Previous research aimed at testing the situational strength hypothesis suffers from serious limitations regarding the conceptualization of strength. In order to overcome these limitations, the present study attempts to test the situational strength hypothesis based on the operationalization of strength as reinforcement contingencies. One dispositional factor of proven effect on cooperative behavior, social value orientation (SVO), was used as a predictor of behavior in four social dilemmas with varying degree of situational strength. The moderating role of incentive condition (hypothetical vs. real) on the relationship between SVO and behavior was also tested. One hundred undergraduates were presented with the four social dilemmas and the Social Value Orientation Scale. One‐half of the sample played the social dilemmas using real incentives, whereas the other half used hypothetical incentives. Results supported the situational strength hypothesis in that no behavioral variability and no effect of SVO on behavior were found in the strongest situation. However, situational strength did not moderate the effect of SVO on behavior in situations where behavior showed variability. No moderating effect was found for incentive condition either. The implications of these results for personality theory and assessment are discussed.  相似文献

The authors investigated the development of the affective, cognitive, and behavioral components of empathy in preschoolers, specifically examining how cognitive empathy is linked to theory of mind and affective perspective taking. Participants were 158 children aged 4–6 years. They listened to narratives and then answered questions about the protagonists' emotions. The affective component was probed with the question, “How do you feel seeing the little girl/boy?”; the cognitive component with the question, “Why do you feel [emotion shared with the character]?”; and the behavioral one with the question, “What would you do if you were next to the little boy/girl [experiencing an emotional scenario]?” Results revealed a developmental sequence in the self-focused attribution of cognitive empathy, and a trend toward a developmental sequence for behavioral empathy, which underwent a slight linear increase between 4 and 6 years old. Affective empathy remained stable. More interestingly, they showed that cognitive empathy is linked to both theory of mind and affective perspective taking.  相似文献

This study's general objective was to analyze whether different types of cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS), namely adaptive strategies—specifically positive refocusing and positive reappraisal—and maladaptive strategies—self-blame, catastrophizing, and rumination—mediated the neuroticism-depression relationship in children 9–12 years old, and whether gender and school transition moderated the relationships proposed. A self-reporting measure was administered to 315 children to evaluate said variables. The resulting data were analyzed using structural equations. The study verified that maladaptive CERS partially mediated neuroticism's relationship with depression, while adaptive CERS, though negatively associated with depression, did not show a mediating effect on this relationship. The results provide evidence of the mediating function of maladaptive CERS on the neuroticism-depression relationship. Gender and school transition did not moderate the relationships proposed. Because, by their very nature, these strategies are modifiable, these results constitute an important finding that can be transferred to the design and content of child mental health prevention and promotion programs.  相似文献

Although the relationship between negative childhood experiences, peer victimization, depressive symptoms, and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) is widely recognized, the mechanisms involved are not fully understood, especially among adolescents. This study aims to test the mediating role of both self-criticism and depressive symptoms in the relationship between memories of negative or positive experiences, current peer victimization, and NSSI. The sample consists 854 Portuguese adolescents, 451 female and 403 male, with ages between 12 and 18 years (M = 14.89; SD = 1.79), from middle and secondary schools. Participants answered self-report measures. Results from path analysis showed that memories of negative experiences, the absence of positive memories with family in childhood and peer victimization indirectly impact on NSSI through self-criticism and depressive symptoms. In addition, these stressful experiences led to depressive symptoms through self-criticism. Lastly, the most severe form of self-criticism indirectly impacts on NSSI through depressive symptoms, even though it also has a strong direct effect. It suggests that negative experiences with parents and peer victimization, as well as the absence of positive memories with family, have a negative impact on NSSI when these experiences are linked with a sense of self-hatred and depressive symptoms.  相似文献

We use the metatheoretical principle of cumulative advantage as a framework to understand the presence of heavy‐tailed productivity distributions and productivity stars. We relied on 229 datasets including 633,876 productivity observations collected from approximately 625,000 individuals in occupations including research, entertainment, politics, sports, sales, and manufacturing, among others. We implemented a novel methodological approach developed in the field of physics to assess the precise shape of the productivity distribution rather than relying on a normal versus nonnormal artificial dichotomy. Results indicate that higher levels of multiplicity of productivity, monopolistic productivity, job autonomy, and job complexity (i.e., conductors of cumulative advantage) are associated with a higher probability of an underlying power law distribution, whereas lower productivity ceilings (i.e., insulator of cumulative advantage) are associated with a lower probability. In addition, higher levels of multiplicity of productivity, monopolistic productivity, and job autonomy were associated with a greater proportion of productivity stars (i.e., productivity distributions with heavier tails), whereas lower productivity ceilings were associated with a smaller proportion of productivity stars (i.e., productivity distributions with lighter tails). Results serve as a building block for future theory development and testing efforts aimed at understanding why, when, and how the distribution of individual productivity may follow a nonnormal curve—and to what extent. We also discuss implications for organizations and management in terms of the design and implementation of human resource systems (e.g., selection, training, compensation), as well as for individuals interested in becoming productivity stars themselves.  相似文献
