Nanotechnology and nanosciences have recently gained tremendous attention and funding, from multiple entities and directions.
In the last 10 years the funding for nanotechnology research has increased by orders of magnitude. An important part that
has also gained parallel attention is the societal and ethical impact of nanotechnology and the possible consequences of its
products and processes on human life and welfare. Multiple thinkers and philosophers wrote about both negative and positive
effects of nanotechnology on humans and societies. The literature has a considerable amount of views about nanotechnology
that range from calling for the abandonment and blockage of all efforts in that direction to complete support and encouragement
in hopes that nanotechnology will be the next big jump in ameliorating human life and welfare. However, amidst all this hype
about the ethics of nanotechnology, relatively less efforts and resources can be found in the literature to help engineering
professionals and educators, and to provide practical methods and techniques for teaching ethics of nanotechnology and relating
the technical side of it to the societal and human aspect. The purpose of this paper is to introduce strategies and ideas
for teaching ethics of nanotechnology in engineering in relation to engineering codes of ethics. The paper is neither a new
philosophical view about ethics of nanotechnology nor a discussion of the ethical dimensions of nanotechnology. This is an
attempt to help educators and professionals by answering the question of how to incorporate ethics of nanotechnology in the
educational process and practice of engineering and what is critical for the students and professionals to know in that regard.
The contents of the presented strategies and ideas focus on the practical aspects of ethical issues related to nanotechnology
and its societal impact. It also builds a relation between these issues and engineering codes of ethics. The pedagogical components
of the strategies are based on best-practices to produce independent life-long self-learners and critical thinkers. These
strategies and ideas can be incorporated as a whole or in part, in the engineering curriculum, to raise awareness of the ethical
issues related to nanotechnology, improve the level of professionalism among engineering graduates, and apply ABET criteria.
It can also be used in the way of professional development and continuing education courses to benefit professional engineers.
Educators and institutions are welcome to use these strategies, a modified version, or even a further developed version of

A negative attitude towards suicide is generally assumed to be predominant in low-income countries. In order to understand the negative attitude in general it is necessary to look at how religion and morality influence the attitudes. Our aim in this qualitative interview study was to investigate what attitudes professional mental health workers in Uganda bear towards suicide and suicidal persons. The professionals argue for their attitude by employing religious, communal and medical ethics arguments, which draw both in a negative and positive direction. The professionals are in general unambiguously negative towards suicide and positive towards suicidal people who are mentally ill. In cases other than mental illness non-accepting attitudes surface. This is discussed against previous research showing that effective treatment of suicidal people is to be based on a trusting and accepting relationship. 相似文献

Previous researchers have argued that there is a metamemory monitoring deficit in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) because patients tend to overestimate their recall performance on a word list. We propose that these previous results are a misleading by-product of the methodologies used, rather than evidence of an underlying metamemory deficit. In two experiments, AD patients and older adult controls made predictions of performance both before and after encoding a to-be-remembered list. Metamemory function was measured by observing the shift in predictions made with, and without, an opportunity to monitor the list. Experiment 1 found that although there were differences between the groups’ accuracy for their prestudy predictions of recall, both groups were equally accurate after encoding. Experiment 2 explored this using four lists that varied in item difficulty and semantic relatedness. This experiment replicated the findings of Experiment 1, and it was also found that the AD group became more accurate at predicting their performance with more exposure to study-test trials. These studies suggest that metamemory monitoring is intact in AD, because AD patients utilize information gained during processing the to-be-remembered items to revise their predictions of subsequent performance. 相似文献

ObjectivesIs the home advantage in individual sports comparable in magnitude and consistency to that in team sports? If not, is it nevertheless a major factor? The present paper reviews the literature to date with respect to these questions and augments it with original analyses where appropriate.DesignThe review is framed and dominated by a design consideration, namely, that all major team sports play balanced home-and-away schedules, whereas individual sports rarely, if ever, do. As a result, it is necessary to take player quality into account in assessing home advantage in an individual sport.Method/approachThe paper begins with three individual sports (tennis, golf, and boxing) in which home advantage has been studied using available controls for player quality. It moves on to individual and team sports in the Olympics, where home advantage has also been studied with credible controls on player (country) quality. Studies are then reviewed in which player quality has not been controlled. Finally, data are presented for two individual efforts embedded in team sports (free throws in basketball and shootouts in ice hockey).ResultsSubjectively evaluated sports such as diving, gymnastics, or figure skating usually show sizable and significant home advantages. Otherwise, occasional findings have been reported but they are not consistent within a sport, are generally weak, and often statistically unreliable.ConclusionsExcept for subjectively evaluated sports, home advantage is not a major factor in individual sports, much less does it play a role in individual sports comparable to its role in team sports. 相似文献

Abstract This paper is an attempt to explore the position that the mother occupies in both Freud's and Lacan's accounts of oedipalization. Both authors' work will be addressed with reference to contemporary feminist critiques of their accounts. The aim will be to query the belief that the mother must be repudiated in order for the child to move into culture. A primary goal of scientists, be they psychologists or physicists, is the detection of cause‐and‐effect relationships. In whatever field of study, the impact of the independent variable upon the dependent variable is assessed either indirectly through presumed change (comparing groups cross‐sectionally) or directly through observed change (comparing a single entity or groups of entities longitudinally). Researchers' conceptualization of change varies quite dramatically, even within the field of psychology, with attendant variation in research designs and statistics commonly employed. Como en los estudios británicos, las críticas y la implicación emocional excesiva de un familiar clave para el paciente en el momento de su ingreso constituyen el mejor predictor aislado de recaída sintomática en los nueve meses posteriores al alta hospitalaria. Al igual que en los resultados británicos, la asociación entre la emoción expresada de los familiares y la recaída fue independiente de todas las demas variables investigadas. Personality Disorder Services working along psychotherapeutic lines are gaining appeal with Health Care Commissioners following the publication of the NICE guidelines for Borderline & Antisocial Personality Disorders and the emerging successful application of psychoanalytically-derived approaches. Establishing a new Personality Disorder Service is akin to constructing a ‘home’ within which the therapeutic work with patients can develop. As clinicians, we are required to question what facets are important to the development of this new home, and to further to endure the unfamiliar state of being ‘not at home’ while the identity of the service is established. We address how this process parallels the task facing the patient as they struggle to establish their own identity. We also highlight some important tenets in the work of securing a robust identity for both the service and the patient suffering from a personality disorder. 相似文献
