As part of a general theory of sexual offending, it is suggested that the failure to achieve intimacy in relations with adults produces emotional loneliness, which leads to an aggressive disposition, and a tendency to pursue sex with diverse partners in the hope of finding intimacy through sexuality or through less threatening partners. The development of intimacy and its benefits are described, as are the consequences that befall those who fail to achieve it. The history of sexual offenders illustrates why they fail to develop the attitudes and skills necessary to attain intimacy, and why this failure leads to sexual abuse. Finally, suggestions are made for the modification of programs for the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders, in order to include problems of intimacy and loneliness. 相似文献

Fifty subjects (29 fearless and 21 fearful) were tested in a potentially acrophobia-inducing situation, and their avoidance behavior and self-reported fear were noted. Subjects also completed various scales intended to measure their fearfulness and thoughts in hypothetical height-phobic, social-phobic and nonphobic situations. Interviews conducted immediately after the behavioral test, evaluated their thinking, fearfulness and tactics designed to deal with any fear they experienced. Analyses indicated that catastrophic thinking is more evident than irrational thinking in height situations and that such thinking was the best predictor of behavior among the measures used. The results are discussed in terms of their relevance for cognitive views of acrophobia and in terms of their relevance for treatment. 相似文献

Heart rates and behavioural states of 14 breast-fed and 14 bottlefed newborn infants were assessed every 30 seconds for 2 continuous hours. The 240 observations of heart rate were treated as time-series data and spectrum-analysed for behavioural rhythmicities. Of the 28 infants, 25 showed reliable cycles in heart rate; 22 of the 25 infants showed a dominant frequency with a 30–60 min periodicity, one that approximates the basic-rest activity cycle (BRAC). In addition to this basic cycle, additional higher frequency cycles in long-term heart rate variability were evident in the spectra of many infants. Breast-fed newborns had greater numbers of reliable cycles in heart rate than bottle-fed newborns. Further, breast-fed newborns had lower overall mean heart rates and lower mean heart rates in Quiet and Active Sleep states than bottle-fed newborns. Bottle-fed newborns were observed more often in Quiet Sleep than breast-fed newborns. Without knowledge of the specific mechanisms causing these behavioural differences, the results of this study suggest that the context in which breast-feeding occurs results in a more complex and energy-efficient pattern of behavioural organization than the context of bottle-feeding. 相似文献

Unilateral visuospatial neglect is now widely acknowledged to be a highly heterogeneous condition: The overt manifestations of visual neglect can vary as a function of task, spatial domain, and mode of response (at least). Double dissociations (sometimes of the strong form) have already been reported between most of the components of what was originally thought to be a relatively stable construct within the visual modality. Nonetheless, throughout successive fractionations of neglect, reported cases of bidirectional task-specific neglect after unilateral brain damage are rare. We now report two such cases. After right hemisphere stroke, the first patient reliably showed severe left neglect on cancellation but right neglect on line bisection. After left hemisphere stroke, the second case showed right neglect on cancellation but left neglect on line bisection. Extensive investigation of case 1 confirmed our previous conjecture that the crucial distinction between these tasks lies in the presence or the absence of an overt target. In contrast to cancellation, line bisection demands the internal computation of the location of the “target” (the midpoint), followed by executing a motor response toward the precise location of that “imaginary” midpoint. The relative attentional and premotor contributions of the intact and damaged hemispheres to these forms of bidirectional neglect are also assessed. 相似文献

The object of this experiment is to study the autonomic nervous control of alpha responses elicited in classical conditioning. Twenty-two mongrel dogs were trained in classical discriminative conditioning. Typical two-phase tachycardic responses were observed in positive (CS+) trials while only the earliest, phase 1, response was observed in negative (CS-) trials. The phase 1 response, which was identical in CS+ and CS-trials, was compared in dogs before and after selective SA-nodal parasympathectomy (N=7) and beta-adrenergic blockade (N=11). The phase 1 tachycardic response was eliminated by selective SA-nodal parasympathectomy but not by beta-adrenergic blockade. We conclude that the phase 1 response observed in both CS+ and CS-trials with similar time sequence and magnitude is an alpha response. The heart rate orienting response results from a withdrawal of parasympathetic activity with little or no change in sympathetic tone. 相似文献

Twenty-four 14- to 30-month-old children observed a model use 20 new words as labels for objects of varied semantic associations. Acquisition of the new words was clear in both elicited and spontaneous imitation by the children and in generalized use of the words. Age was highly and positively correlated with elicited and spontaneous imitation and scores for recognition of the objects associated with the words. Imitation and recognition scores were highest for words associated with food and active objects and low for passive objects and words with no associations. Older children's use of the words immediately after the model's use increased rapidly with the first two presentations, and their use of the words prior to the model's use showed an increasing trend over the series of modeling sessions. An attempt was made to specify whether previously reported limitations on young children's full-report capacity lay in a smaller amount of available information, in a shorter trace duration of information in visual information storage (VIS), or in poorer coding of information into permanent storage. Five- and 8-year-olds and adults were shown an eight-item array of figures. followed at varying intervals by an indicator signaling the subject to report the figure to which the indicator had pointed. The effects of three levels of familiarity or “labelability” were examined. While no age differences were revealed in amount of information available nor in the trace duration of information in VIS, strong age differences emerged in coding of information into permanent storage. Data on latency to verbal labeling and familiarity suggested that verbal labeling could not account for the age trends. Rather, the differences seemed to lie in the use of organized visual coding and rehearsal strategies by adults and their relative lack of use by children. 相似文献

Children's comprehension of the semantic rules for temporal prepositions was investigated. The temporal prepositions werein, on, andat. Lech's (1969) semantic analysis was used as the framework for the study. The contextual property [(x)]→TIM[PERI] with its related constraints indicates the ill-formedness of phrases like* in noon,* on January and* at Saturday. Correct usage of these prepositions is based on the implicit distinction between time with or without duration (period versus moment). Comprehension differences among the prepositions, based on semantic differences were hypothesized, as well as developmental differences across age levels. Thirty-five children at each of three levels (kindergarten, grades 2, and 4) in Experiment 1, and 24 grade 4 children in Experiment 2, judged the appropriateness of sentences containing temporal prepositions and attempted to revise the ill-formed sentences. Significant developmental differences were observed. Kindergarten children could not discriminate between well- and ill-formed sentences; second grade children could discriminate but could not identify the reason for their discrimination, nor could they revise the ill-formed sentences. Fourth grade children could discriminate and identify or revise the ill-formedness. Ability to revise the prepositions was found to be related to cognitive developmental level. None of the children in either experiment were able to articulate the periodicity-moment temporal distinction which provides the basis for the semantic constraints. The awareness of semantic rules for temporal prepositions may be relatively late in developing, perhaps between the ages of 8 and 10 years. An advanced awareness of these rules may develop considerably later. 相似文献
