Use of real-time data collection is rapidly expanding in the medical sciences and questions have been raised as to whether frequent ratings of disease symptoms could evoke depressed mood. This study investigated the effect of an intensive momentary assessment protocol on depressed mood. Community rheumatology patients (= 105) were recruited to participate in a 30-day momentary assessment protocol of pain and fatigue. Patients were randomly signaled and completed approximately 6 ratings per day and at bedtime. Beck Depression Inventory-II scores were obtained prior to and at the completion of the protocol. Thirty-six percent of patients were classified initially as mild to severely depressed, and 31% percent at the end of the protocol. Depression scores were significantly lower following the protocol (< .001). Whereas 10% of patients shifted into a more depressed category at the end of the protocol, 20% shifted into a less depressed category. These findings suggest frequent assessment of pain and fatigue may not induce depressed mood, and may in some instances be associated with a small reduction in depressed mood.  相似文献

This study addressed fathers' satisfaction with their wives' employment role and fathers' participation in child care and household tasks in a middle-class sample of families with first-born infants in which the mother was either employed or a homemaker. Observations of mother, father, and infant were carried out in the home on weekday evenings when the infants were 12 months old, and parent interviews were carried out after the completion of the observations. On interview measures, fathers with homemaker wives tended to report greater satisfaction with their wives' employment role than did fathers whose wives were employed. In addition, fathers with employed wives, but not those with homemaker wives, reported that they were participating more in child care and household tasks as a result of their wives' emplovment role. On home observation measures, fathers with employed wives were found to engage in somewhat less Distal Interaction with their infants, but the two groups did not differ with regard to Proximal, Complex Social, or Caregiving Interactions. The results indicate the need to give special consideration to the infancy period when one is examining both paternal endorsement of maternal employment and the father's participation with children in light of the mother's employment role.  相似文献

A growing child forms part of a network of relationships that affect the course of his or her development. Understanding individual development requires us to come to terms both with successive levels of social complexity (individual characteristics, interactions, relationships, groups) and with the dialectical relations between them and between each of them and the sociocultural structure (values, beliefs, etc.). Gender differences occur not only in the frequency of occurrence of particular types of interactions, but also in the two-way influences between individual characteristics and relationships. In a study of preschool children, gender differences were found in the structure of the mother/child relationship and in the relations between the mothedchild relationship and child (temperament) and maternal (mood) characteristics. Such differences probably result from gender stereotypes held by the mother and may have important consequences. Most attempts to understand the genesis of gender differences involve assessing the influence of biological vs. social factors. It is necessary also to analyze the ways in which very small mean differences in biological propensities become exaggerated and distorted in social stereotypes by the dialectical relations between successive levels of social complexity and the ways in which these then feed back on individual development.  相似文献

Forty females and 40 males were shown slides of masculine and feminine phrases controlled for social desirability, sex-linked content, syllable length, and negative semantic construction to evaluate schematic processing on the dimensions of masculinity and femininity. Their responses to the phrases were timed. The BSRI, PAQ, and SSR1Q administered subsequent to the slide presentation were used to categorize subjects into groups of masculine, feminine, androgynous, and undifferentiated. Comparisons between the groups evaluated by the different scales indicated that the PAQ was the best predictor of schematic processing and that the SSRIQ and gender were not predictors of schematic processing. Correlations between the SSRIQ and the masculine and feminine scales of the BSRI and PAQ provided evidence partially supportive of Storms's (1979) theory that sex-role identity influences the development of same-sex-typed attributes but does not influence opposite-sex-typed attributes.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about temporal patterns of diet change within interventions, nor about predictors of early and sustained successful change. Social-cognitive theory asserts that early successes in achieving behavior change increase self-efficacy, leading to longer-term success. DESIGN: The authors conducted exploratory cluster analyses using dietary data from the first month of the telephone counseling intervention of the Women's Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) Study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Change in dietary pattern at three early intervention timepoints. RESULTS: Three clusters were identified: Cluster 1 (25%) was close to meeting study goals at baseline, but still made major changes; Cluster 2 (49%) and Cluster 3 (26%) were not achieving study goals at baseline, but Cluster 2 made substantial immediate changes, while Cluster 3 changed their diet more gradually. Baseline demographic and behavioral variables were associated with cluster membership; however, the strongest predictors of cluster were self-efficacy, motivation, and approaches to study goals. Cluster membership predicted dietary pattern at 12 months. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that a one-on-one telephone counseling intervention that is intensive in the early weeks may maximize the level of change achieved in a study.  相似文献
