Learning to “See” Less Than Nothing: Putting Perceptual Skills to Work for Learning Numerical Structure

How can children's natural perceptuo-motor skills be harnessed for teaching and learning mathematical structure? We address this question in the case of the integers. Existing research suggests that adult mental representations of integers recruit perceptuo-motor functionalities involving symmetry. Building on these findings, we designed a hands-on curriculum that emphasizes symmetry to teach integer concepts to fourth graders. Compared to two control conditions, children who went through the experimental curriculum showed evidence of incorporating symmetry into their mental representations of integers and performed higher on problems beyond the scope of instruction, including negative fractions and algebra-readiness problems. Gains did not come at the expense of basic integer computation skill. This study has direct practical implications, as current integers curricula generally omit symmetry. The research demonstrates an approach to designing instruction that involves identifying perceptuo-motor functionalities underlying numerical cognition and creating learning activities to recruit them.     

Troubled or Traumatized Youth? The Relations Between Psychopathy,Violence Exposure,Posttraumatic Stress Disorder,and Antisocial Behavior Among Juvenile Offenders

The current study examined how psychopathy, exposure to violence, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with antisocial behavior among 1,354 serious delinquent adolescents from the Pathways to Desistance study. Results showed that psychopathy, violence exposure, and PTSD are independently linked to self-reported involvement of delinquency, even after controlling for respondents’ demographic characteristics. However, the effect of PTSD on antisocial behavior was small. Differential associations were observed between the 2 factors of psychopathy, interpersonal/affective and social deviance, and PTSD symptoms. Specifically, the effect of social deviance characteristics on delinquency was above and beyond that of interpersonal/affective features. In addition, exposure to violence as a victim or witness were uniquely associated with increased delinquent behavior. Findings clarified the relations among psychopathy, violence exposure, PTSD, and antisocial behavior, and highlighted the differential links between psychopathy factors and delinquency.     

Quality of Life of Individuals with Acquired Brain Injuries

This study investigated the quality of life of individuals with acquired brain injuries (ABI) across a one- to fifteen-year post-injury time span. This allows us to identify the health and service needs of individuals with ABI and provide direction for further improvement. Twenty-nine individuals were invited from the local Self-Help Group for the Brain-Damaged to participate in this study. Four instruments were used to help in the investigation of the subjective components of the quality of life, including the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) and Positive and Negative Affect Scales (PANAS). The instruments used were the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) and Lawton Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL) Scale. After analysis of the results and their interpretation, there was no significant difference between the post-injury groups in their scores of negative affect. It is suggested that there should be services, such as psychotherapy, to help reduce the existence of negative moods. Improvement in the IADL aspect should be more focused in future rehabilitation services to allow people to enjoy a fuller life.     

The grateful disposition: a conceptual and empirical topography.

In four studies, the authors examined the correlates of the disposition toward gratitude. Study I revealed that self-ratings and observer ratings of the grateful disposition are associated with positive affect and well-being, prosocial behaviors and traits, and religiousness/spirituality. Study 2 replicated these findings in a large nonstudent sample. Study 3 yielded similar results to Studies I and 2 and provided evidence that gratitude is negatively associated with envy and materialistic attitudes. Study 4 yielded evidence that these associations persist after controlling for Extraversion/positive affectivity. Neuroticism/negative affectivity, and Agreeableness. The development of the Gratitude Questionnaire, a unidimensional measure with good psychometric properties, is also described.     

Erotic Authenticity: Comparing Intimate Relationships between High-End Bar and Low-End Bar in China’s Global Sex Industry

Research on the sex industry generally focuses heavily on the economic relationship between sex workers and their clients but typically fails to consider the role and significance of intimacy within these interactions. By drawing upon over 36 months’ ethnographic work conducted in high-end and low-end bars in Dongguan from 2008 to 2009 and 2011 to 2017, the article argues that sex workers and their clients are not only involved in pecuniary transactions but also may exchange intimate and non-remunerative feelings. In order to understand the factors that both facilitate and limit experiences of intimacy in sex work, relevant socioeconomic circumstances must be deconstructed. The dynamics that characterize contemporary Dongguan must be considered within the unique subcultures that characterize the high-end and low-end sex markets. In order to extrapolate from the aforementioned factors, this article examines the interactions of concepts such as economic and cultural capitals, emotional labor, and bounded authenticity to provide insights into how intimacy occurs in China’s global sex industry. The article will also draw from these insights and explore how Chinese and foreign clients overcome social and cultural barriers to develop intimate relationships with sex workers.     

Integrating psychological research on girls with feminist activism: a model for building a liberation psychology in the United States

A liberation psychology is needed to bridge the gap between psychology's focus on individual distress and broad social forces that foster such distress. We offer a model for bridging this gap by focusing on a specific area of psychology (psychological research on girls) and a specific social movement (feminist activism). Psychological research on girls and feminist activism share the common goal of improving the lives of girls and women. However, both have fallen short of this goal. This is due, in part, to the weaknesses associated with each endeavor and to the fact that the complementary strengths of each have remained isolated from the other. In this paper, we propose a common language and shared framework to integrate psychological research with feminist activism. First, we review the basic strengths and weaknesses associated with psychological research and feminist activism, with a particular focus on how they are distinct from one another. Second, we provide a taxonomic framework for integrating these two areas on the basis of the stress paradigm, with specific examples provided from our recent reviews of the literature and our own empirical work with adolescent girls. Finally, we conclude with recommendations for future work needed to integrate psychological research on girls with feminist activism toward the goal of building a liberation psychology in the United States.     

Personality traits in adolescence as predictors of religiousness in early adulthood: findings from the Terman Longitudinal Study

The authors examined the associations of the Big Five personality factors with religiousness in adulthood for a 19-year longitudinal sample of 492 adolescents age 12 to 18. Among the Big Five, Conscientiousness in adolescence was uniquely related to higher religiousness in early adulthood. For adolescents high in Emotional Stability, the link between strength of religious upbringing and religiousness in adulthood was weaker than it was for adolescents who were less emotionally stable. These findings replicate the work of others demonstrating the importance of Conscientiousness as a predictor of religiousness and suggest that emotionally unstable adolescents might be more likely to adopt levels of religiousness that are similar to those of their parents.     

Ability to register new information: a memory measure for the aged

Ability to register new information is a necessity for the maintenance of autonomy. Its measurement is especially critical with older patients to distinguish cognitive from other aging losses. This paper introduces the Aronson Shopping List, constructed to assess that ability. It describes a check on the test's reliability and an aspect of construct validity for its use. The subjects were 67 community volunteers aged 62 to 89 yr. Those aged 80 to 89 yr. required more training than members of the two preceding decades. Correlations of learning scores on the Aronson Shopping List with WAIS or WAIS--R subtests and prorated IQs were significant. Alternate form stability/reliability, checked after a mean interval of 11 mo. was .75. Assessing cognitive aging was discussed and related to memory.     

The measurement of response force during a lever-press shock-escape procedure in rats

Three albino rats were given extensive exposure to an escape procedure in which shocks were scheduled to occur 30 sec apart. The amount of downward force exerted on the lever was continuously recorded and compared with traditional discrete measurement in which only responses above an arbitrary force threshold were recorded. Subjects typically remained in contact with the lever throughout the shock-free intertrial interval. Shock onset reliably occasioned a brief lurch from and return to the lever, which resulted in a lever-press escape response being recorded. Lever contact, which occupied an average of 90% of session time, showed great stability in force after a brief (e.g., 5-sec) period of instability after each shock terminated. In general, continuous measurement revealed considerably different results than discrete measurements of on-lever behavior. For example, continuous lever contact fluctuating near response threshold was often recorded as discrete responding, and sustained lever contact occurring below response threshold was omitted from discrete measurement.
