Poor decision making during adolescence occurs most frequently when situations
are emotionally charged. However, relatively few studies have measured the
development of cognitive control in response to emotional stimuli in this
population. This study used both affective (emotional faces) and non-affective
(letter) stimuli in two different flanker tasks to assess the ability to ignore
task-irrelevant but distracting information, in 25 adults and 25 adolescents. On
the non-emotional (letter) flanker task, the presence of incongruent flanking
letters increased the number of errors, and also slowed participants’ ability to
identify a central letter. Adolescents committed more errors than adults, but
there were no age-related differences for the reaction time interference effect
in the letter condition. Post-hoc testing revealed that age-related differences
on the task were driven by the younger adolescents (11-14 years); adults and
older adolescents (15-17 years) were equally accurate in the letter condition.
In contrast, on the emotional face flanker task, not only were adolescents less
accurate than adults but they were also more distracted by task-irrelevant
fearful faces as evidenced by greater reaction time interference effects. Our
findings suggest that the ability to self-regulate in adolescents, as evidenced
by the ability to suppress irrelevant information on a flanker task, is more
difficult when stimuli are affective in nature. The ability to ignore irrelevant
flankers appears to mature earlier for non-affective stimuli than for affective

A total of 114 3rd- and 6th-graders from a suburban elementary school participated in a study examining the influence of implicit self-theories on rated creativity in the domains of art and literature in a quasi-experiment. Creativity was measured via the Consensual Assessment Technique. Participants were divided into two groups and received different sets of instructions emphasizing either an incremental or entity-implicit theory of creativity, before completing a drawing task and a writing task. Implicit theories of creativity of participants were measured before and after the instructions were given. The results indicated that participants in the incremental group showed increased incremental views following the manipulation; participants in the entity group showed no significant change. The writing (but not the artwork) from the incremental group was rated as more creative than those from the entity group. This effect was stronger for third graders than for sixth graders, suggesting that implicit theory interventions are more effective with younger children. Implications are discussed. 相似文献

In this pilot study, the effectiveness and feasibility of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for decreasing disruptive behavior was evaluated in 17 young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). PCIT is a behaviorally based play therapy which targets the parent-child relationship through live coaching of play interactions and the implementation of consistent discipline techniques. Following an average of 19 sessions, disruptive behavior as measured by multiple indices significantly decreased. Congruently, parents increased positive parental following skills and decreased negative parental leading skills across the course of treatment. In addition, parents reported increased levels of child functional communication and prosocial behavior. High levels of parent acceptability of the intervention were also noted. Effect sizes were medium to large across measured dependent variables, including parent report and behavioral observations. Implications for the clinical use of PCIT within an ASD population and future research with controlled outcome studies are discussed. 相似文献

Past research on the desirability bias and on bracing for bad news has focused on the potential influence of outcome desirability on people's stated expectations. The present studies examined its influence on behavior—that is, what is done in anticipation of, or preparation for, an uncertain outcome. In five studies, the desirability of possible outcomes for an event, which was uncertain and uncontrollable by the participant, was manipulated, and preparation behavior was measured. Study 1 used a hypothetical‐events paradigm. Studies 2 and 3 involved a computer activity in which behavior was tracked on a trial‐by‐trial basis. In Studies 4 and 5, the uncertain event was the ending of a videotaped basketball game. Rather than exhibiting bracing or a reluctance to tempt fate, participants tended to behave in a manner consistent with an optimistic desirability bias. In a subset of studies, predictions and likelihood judgments were also solicited; the differential effects of outcome desirability on these measures are discussed.
