This paper presents a survey designed to identify the procedures used by British university departments when selecting academic staff and compare them with typical practice in other UK organizations. The results indicate that, compared with other large organizations, university departments make much less use of psychometric tests or assessment centres, relying heavily on the application form, a single interview and a presentation. There were no differences between academic departments of English, Biology or Psychology and the level of academic appointment only affected the composition of the interview panel. Possible reasons for the failure to use modern objective methods of selection are considered. It is argued that universities should apply more objective selection methods based on a full analysis of the competencies required of the higher education lecturer. 相似文献

Through their organization and curricula, schools either promote separate roles for males and females or operate to minimize differences. This study describes sex differences in science and reading achievement and attitudes for nationwide samples of 14-year-old children in the United States, Sweden, and England. There are largely the same sex differences in all three countries: Male and female pupils have similar reading skills, while girls have more positive reading habits; males outperform females in science, with the smallest difference observed for biology; males have more positive attitudes toward science, except that females believe science to be at least as important a topic as boys do. There is no noteworthy increase in sex distinctions with one more year of schooling, from grade 8 to grade 9. However, in English coeducational schools, girls show a deceleration in science and vocabulary achievement relative to their male peers. Girls in English one-sex schools exceed their male counterparts in reading and several science subjects. It is hypothesized that the role of successful female teachers and peers, and the absence of social pressure from boys, may facilitate girls' learning in these areas. A study is proposed of specific school practices and the ways in which they determine sex discrepancies.An earlier version of this article was presented to the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, San Francisco, April 1976. This paper describes a preparation for recording action potentials from the central nervous system of an intact self-respiring fish. The cervical spinal cord of the anesthetized fish was lesioned to minimize body movements, and the brain was exposed by cutting a hole in the dorsal skull. A clamp was attached to the rostral edge of this hole to eliminate motion of the skull. The fish in this preparation can control its own respiration and thus maintain an essentially normal respiratory state. This is a significant improvement over previous preparations, as respiratory state has been shown to be an important determinant of central nervous system function. 相似文献

Twelve cases with agoraphobic and other phobic symptoms are presented. Their family backgrounds and marital relationships are delineated. A consistent pattern, the phobic-counterphobic system, emerges. This contains five elements. (1) Anxious ambivalent attachment, which characterizes the previous childhood relationships of both partners in the marriage. The future patient has responded to this with a tendency to clinging behaviour, her spouse with a propensity to detachment. (2) A marriage in which, initially, each, through the other, escapes from their childhood difficulties. (3) A precipitating change with challenges the couple's illusionary unity. (4) A period of escalation and failure of reassurance by the husband. (5) The illness, which stabilizes the system and leads to a 'compulsory marriage'. When people argue with others in conversation, they make a variety of conversational moves: They make claims, ask for justification of others' claims, attack claims, and attack claims' justifications. The arrangement of these moves gives argumentation its characteristic shape. This article illustrates a proposed format for conversations of this type, and it reviews some findings about the way people understand and evaluate these conversations. The findings suggest that judgments of the arguers' burden depend not only on the content of their claims, but also on the conversation's structure. In addition, judgments of the strength of a justification—an arguer's evidence or explanation—are a function of the argument's setting. 相似文献

PSYCHLOPS (Psychological Outcome Profiles) is a recently developed, client‐generated, psychometric instrument that can be used as an outcome measure. Based on a similar instrument developed primarily for use in physical illnesses (MYMOP — ‘Measure Your Medical Outcome Profile’), it seeks the client's perspective on their psychological distress. It asks them to describe and then score the problem that troubles them the most at the start of counselling. We describe the development of PSYCHLOPS, including the involvement of the Plain English Campaign and two national mental health organisations: the mental health charity and support group, Depression Alliance (DA) and Primary Care Mental Health Education (PRIMHE). We review the literature and suggest that PSYCHLOPS, by focusing on the problems of greatest priority to the client, might prove a sensitive measure of improvement after counselling. 相似文献

Rather than treating paired associate and serial learning as involving the acquisition of distinct types of information [e.g. Murdock (1974). Human memory: Theory and data. New York: Wiley] I propose an Isolation Principle which treats the two as ends of a continuum. According to this principle, consecutive pairs of items are relatively isolated from other studied items in paired associates learning, but not isolated in serial list learning. The consequence is that variability that dominates forward and backward probed recall is highly correlated in pairs but less so, due to differential interference, in lists. This can explain an important dissociation: whereas forward and backward probes of pairs are nearly perfectly correlated, the correlation is only moderate for serial lists. I demonstrate this in a chaining model by varying item-to-item associative strengths and in a positional coding model by varying the similarity structure of item positions. This enables a range of models to account for data on pairs and lists, as well as potential intermediate or hybrid paradigms, within a single theoretical framework. 相似文献

The authors tested the hypothesis that there is a correlation between hemispheric cognitive style and ear temperature. A sample of 100 participants completed a measure of hemispheric cognitive style, the Hemispheric Consensus Prediction Profile. Ear temperatures were taken in 2 sessions, 2 times for each ear at each session. Average left ear temperature was subtracted from average right ear temperature as an index of dominant temperature. Only 56 of the participants showed a stable dominant ear temperature. For these 56 participants, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between scores on the Hemispheric Consensus Prediction Profile and tympanic member temperature (Spearman's ρ =.29, 95% CI [.04,.51]). Individuals with a left hemispheric cognitive style tended to have a warmer left tympanic membrane temperature while those with a right hemispheric cognitive style tended to have a warmer right tympanic membrane temperature. Tympanic membrane temperatures are easily obtained using inexpensive and noninvasive technology. The relationship suggested by these findings may open new opportunities for the study of cerebral asymmetry. 相似文献

The effects of letter substitutions have been linked to their position within a word (letter position effects). The current study expanded upon previous research by examining letter-position effects for letter substitutions using forward- and reverse-spelled word primes. Often substituting a letter on one side of a word will have a stronger impact on performance than substituting a letter on the other side of a word. In three experiments it was revealed that the letter-position effects of substitutions changed places when words were spelled backwards. This occurred when both the target and prime were spelled backwards. This was evidence of a congruency effect of letter-position priming. The ramifications of these results for word recognition and transfer are discussed. However, the need for future research should focus on the possibility of an inversion process/mechanism. 相似文献

Many scholars have written about the role of spirituality in health care. One mechanism for incorporating spirituality into the care of patients is to integrate clinically trained chaplains into hospital care teams. We examined in a mixed-methods fashion, the effects of this type of integrated care team within a teaching hospital setting. The quality and impact of chaplain involvement were studied from patient and physician-in-training perspectives, using data from more than 200 patients and physicians in training. Findings clearly show that clinically trained chaplains can contribute meaningful expertise and real value to the quality and comprehensiveness of patient and physician experiences. 相似文献
