Changing features do not guide attention in change detection: Evidence from a spatial cuing paradigm
Smilek, Eastwood, and Merikle (2000) demonstrated that the detection of change was facilitated when the target character changed
in many rather than few of its features. Specifically, the function relating search response time to display set size was
shallower when more features changed than when fewer features changed. The researchers interpreted these results as indicating
that large feature changes provide preattentive guidance of focal attention to the location of the change. We tested this
preattentive guidance hypothesis by examining change detection performance in the context of a spatial cuing paradigm. The
hypothesis predicts that (1) the cost on invalidly cued trials should be less when more features change than when fewer features
change, and (2) the features manipulation should have no effect on validly cued trials. In contrast to these predictions,
our results show that cuing effects are equivalent across all levels of feature change and that a robust effect of the features
manipulation is observable for both validly and invalidly cued trials. We argue that large feature changes do not provide

Motor learning in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and eyeblink conditioning use similar neural circuitry, and they may use similar cellular plasticity mechanisms. Classically conditioned eyeblink responses undergo extinction after prolonged exposure to the conditioned stimulus in the absence of the unconditioned stimulus. We investigated the possibility that a process similar to extinction may reverse learned changes in the VOR. We induced a learned alteration of the VOR response in rhesus monkeys using magnifying or miniaturizing goggles, which caused head movements to be accompanied by visual image motion. After learning, head movements in the absence of visual stimulation caused a loss of the learned eye movement response. When the learned gain was low, this reversal of learning occurred only when head movements were delivered, and not when the head was held stationary in the absence of visual input, suggesting that this reversal is mediated by an active, extinction-like process. 相似文献

Previous evidence has suggested that N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) are critically involved in the acquisition of aversively based learning tasks. However, the role of NMDARs in the BLA in the consolidation of memory of aversive training has not been well elucidated. In the present study, the NMDAR antagonist AP-5 (1 or 3 microg) was infused into the BLA of male Sprague-Dawley rats immediately before, immediately after, or 6h after training on an inhibitory avoidance task with either a high footshock (HFS; only high dose of AP-5 given) or a low footshock (LFS; both doses of AP-5 given). The 48 h retention of animals given AP-5 (3 microg) immediately before or after HFS training was significantly impaired compared to that of vehicle-controls. In contrast, the retention of rats given AP-5 (3 microg) immediately after LFS training was significantly enhanced compared to that of vehicle-controls. AP-5 (3 microg) infusions administered 6h after training with either an HFS or LFS did not affect retention. These findings suggest that the NMDARs in the BLA are involved in both the acquisition and consolidation of aversive memory. In addition, the AP-5-induced enhancement of memory obtained with LFS training suggests that NMDARs in the BLA are involved in other mechanisms influencing synaptic transmission, in addition to their well-established role in neuroplasticity. 相似文献

The intent of a binomial effect size display (BESD) is to show "the [real-world] importance of [an] effect indexed by a correlation [r]" (R. Rosenthal, 1994, p. 242) by reexpressing this correlation as a success rate difference (SRD) (e.g., treatment group success rate-control group success rate). However, SRDs displayed in BESDs generally overestimate real-world SRDs implied by correlations of (a) dichotomous X and Y variables (phi coefficients), (b) dichotomous X and continuous Y variables (point-biserial coefficients [rpbs]). and (c) continuous X and Y variables (rxys). Furthermore, overestimation biases are larger for rxys than for rpbs. Differences in the sizes of biases linked to different correlations suggest that BESD SRDs reported for different correlations are not comparable. The stochastic difference index (N. Cliff, 1993: A. Groups of first-grade (mean age = 82 months), third-grade (mean age = 107 months), and fifth-grade (mean age = 131 months) children with a learning disability in mathematics (MD, n = 58) and their normally achieving peers (n = 91) were administered tasks that assessed their knowledge of counting principles, working memory, and the strategies used to solve simple (4+3) and complex (16+8) addition problems. In all grades, the children with MD showed a working memory deficit, and in first grade, the children with MD used less sophisticated strategies and committed more errors while solving simple and complex addition problems. The group differences in strategy usage and accuracy were related, in part, to the group difference in working memory and to group and individual differences in counting knowledge. Across grade-level and group, the switch from simple to complex addition problems resulted in a shift in the mix of problem-solving strategies. Individual differences in the strategy mix and in the strategy shift were related, in part, to individual differences in working memory capacity and counting knowledge. 相似文献

This study found mixed support for the hypothesis that the difference in criterion-related validity between unstructured and structured employment interviews is due solely to the greater reliability of structured interviews. Using data from prior meta-analyses, this hypothesis was tested in 4 data sets by using standard psychometric procedures to remove the effects of measurement error in interview scores from correlations with rated job performance and training performance. In the 1st data set. support was found for this hypothesis. However, in a 2nd data set structured interviews had higher true score correlations with performance ratings, and in 2 other data sets unstructured interviews had higher true score correlations. We also found that averaging across 3 to 4 independent unstructured interviews provides the same level of validity for predicting job performance as a structured interview administered by a single interviewer. In four experiments involving 184 participants, people rated their confidence that particular events had happened in their childhood (e.g., "Broke a window playing ball"). If participants had to unscramble a key word in a phrase just before rating it (e.g., "Broke a nwidwo [window] playing ball"), confidence ratings increased-the revelation effect. However, the pattern of revelation effects depended on the particular way in which participants processed key words (e.g., visualizing vs. counting vowels in the word window) approximately 10 min prior to rating life events that contained those words. Prior exposure to key words never in itself directly affected confidence ratings. These results demonstrate that one can manipulate the revelation effect by altering the processing that participants perform on words prior to unscrambling them. These results also pose difficulties for many accounts of the revelation effect. The major puzzle posed by our present findings is that unscrambling key words increases confidence that an event has happened in childhood, whereas prior exposure to these words does not. 相似文献

College students generated autobiographical memories from distinct emotional categories that varied in valence (positive vs. negative) and intensity (high vs. low). They then rated various perceptual, cognitive, and emotional properties for each memory. The distribution of these emotional memories favored a vector model over a circumplex model. For memories of all specific emotions, intensity accounted for significantly more variance in autobiographical memory characteristics than did valence or age of the memory. In two additional experiments, we examined multiple memories of emotions of high intensity and positive or negative valence and of positive valence and high or low intensity. Intensity was a more consistent predictor of autobiographical memory properties than was valence or the age of the memory in these experiments as well. The general effects of emotion on autobiographical memory properties are due primarily to intensity differences in emotional experience, not to benefits or detriments associated with a specific valence. 相似文献
