In traditional armchair methodology, philosophers attempt to challenge a thesis of the form ‘F iff G’ or ‘F only if G’ by describing a scenario that elicits the intuition that what has been described is an F that isn’t G. If they succeed, then the judgment that there is, or could be, an F that is not G counts as good prima facie evidence against the target thesis. Moreover, if these intuitions remain compelling after further (good faith) reflection, then traditional armchair methodology takes the judgment to be serious (though not infallible) evidence against the target thesis—call it secunda facie evidence—that should not be discounted as long as those intuitions retain their force. Some philosophers, however, suggest that this methodology is incompatible with epistemological naturalism, the view that philosophical inquiry should be sensitive to empirical observations, and argue that traditional armchair methodology must deemphasize the role of intuitions in philosophical inquiry. In my view, however, this would be a mistake: as I will argue, the most effective way to promote philosophical progress is to treat intuitions as having the (prima and secunda) evidential status I’ve described. But I will also argue that philosophical inquiry can produce a theory that is sensitive to empirical observations and the growth of empirical knowledge, even if it gives intuitions the prima- and secunda-facie evidential status that traditional armchair methodology demands—and thus that traditional armchair methodology, if properly practiced, need not be abandoned by naturalists, or even (except for a few exceptions) be much revised. 相似文献

Research traditionally has focused on the development of symptoms in those who experienced war trauma directly but overlooked the impact of trauma in the partners of soldiers. The current study reports data from 45 couples where the male partners were Army soldiers who recently returned from deployments to Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) or Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom). Results from this study indicated that female partner primary trauma, particularly trauma related to PTSD re-experiencing and arousal symptoms, has an influence on levels of relationship satisfaction, both for female partners and soldiers. 相似文献

A plausible principle governing identity is that whether a later individual is identical with an earlier individual cannot ever merely depend on whether there are, at the later time, any better candidates for identity with the earlier individual around. This principle has been a bone of contention amongst philosophers interested in identity for many years. In his latest book Philosophical Explanations Robert Nozick presents what I believe to be the strongest case yet made out for the rejection of this principle. My aim in this paper is to argue, with reference in particular to personal and artefact identity, that Nozick's case can be met and that a theory of identity which entails the correctness of this principle is the equal, indeed the superior, in explanatory power of the theory Nozick develops on the basis of its rejection. 相似文献

Jones et al. (Jones, Hughes, & Macken, 2006; Jones, Macken, & Nicholls, 2004) identify the interaction between phonological similarity, articulatory suppression, and stimulus presentation mode in verbal short-term memory as potentially providing important support for the phonological loop hypothesis. They find such an interaction but attribute it to "perceptual organization masquerading as phonological storage". We present data using shorter letter sequences and find clear evidence of the interaction predicted by the phonological loop hypothesis, which, unlike the evidence of Jones et al., is not limited to recency, and which provides continued support for the phonological loop hypothesis. 相似文献

This paper reports on the disturbed behavior of children who are subject to entrenched parental disputes over their custody and care after separation and divorce. The 56 children who varied in racial and socioeconomic origin were 4 to 12 years old at entry into the study. They were assessed at two points: at the time of the custody dispute and 2.5 years later. The extent of the child's involvement in the dispute and the amount of role reversal between parent and child predicted total behavior problems and aggression at the time of the legal dispute. These same factors, together with the rate of verbal and physical aggression between parents, predicted total behavior problems, depression, withdrawn/uncommunicative behavior, somatic complaints, and aggression at the 2-year follows-up. There were no main effects for sex and age. However, at the 2-year mark, girls in high-conflict families were more depressed and withdrawn, and older children in high-conflict situations had more somatic complaints and were more aggressive. The findings are considered in the light of a number of etiological mechanisms by which parental conflict affects children.

A new ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) 18/19 Career Exploration Program was made available to United States secondary and postsecondary schools in July 1992. The program allows individual students to use their aptitude test results, an inventory of their interests, and personal preferences to identify occupations with characteristics that seem to be consistent with their own. Administered measures of functional status, psychological distress, and quality of life to a consecutive series of 48 liver transplant recipients in follow-up clinic. Results showed that nearly total functional recovery was the norm. Thirty-six patients (75%) had a Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score of 80–100. Twelve transplant recipients had KPS scores below 80; none were employed, and most had been transplanted within 1 year. In spite of their impaired financial status, eight of these 12 reported being mostly satisfied on the self-report Quality-of-Life Scale (QLS). For the posttransplant sample as a whole, 83% were mostly satisfied with their quality of life. Pre- and posttransplant patient samples were not significantly different in reporting mild emotional distress. Results for the small subgroup with significant objective or subjective problems in achieving acceptable quality of life following liver transplantation were reviewed. Higher than normal emotional distress on the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R) was consistently reported by these patients. Prospective studies are needed to identify predictor variables of quality-of-life problems and to develop prevention and rehabilitation interventions. 相似文献

The Trinitarian view of validity (namely content, criterion-related, and construct) has dominated psychology for almost a
half century. In industrial and personnel psychology especially, content and criterion-related (in particular) forms of validity
have served as workhorses. Such a limited focus has lead to a stagnation of the area and the inability to incorporate more
theory into the research and practice of personnel psychology. Therefore, we review the evolution of the concept of validity
in the psychology discipline, with a particular emphasis on industrial and personnel psychology. We then review the legal
and statutory history within industrial and personnel psychology that has helped to shape the concept of validity over the
years. Finally, we examine some emerging trends in industrial and personnel psychology, including the issue of graduate training,
which may have important consequences on how we conceptualize validity in the future in both our research and practice of
