Effect of peer presence on the sex-typed toy choices of 3- and 4-year-olds was investigated in a repeated measures experimental design. Twenty-six girls and thirty-six boys were tested under three conditions: (a) alone; (b) in the presence of a same-sex peer; and (c) in the presence of an opposite-sex peer. Amount of time spent playing with three feminine- and three masculine-stereotyped toys was recorded. For both boys and girls, play with “sex role-inappropriate” toys was significantly lower in the presence of an opposite-sex peer than in the solitary condition. Across conditions boys exhibited less play with opposite-sex-typed toys than girls. Rate of play with opposite-sex-typed toys increased in successive trials for both sexes. These results indicate that the presence of an opposite-sex peer functions as a discriminative stimulus for avoidance of “sex role-inappropriate” play in preschoolers and suggests that preschoolers may have a history of differential reinforcement for sex-typed play in the presence of peers. 相似文献

Abstract— Professors from the University of California at Berkeley were administered a 90-min test battery of cognitive performance that included measures of reaction time, paired-associate learning, working memory, and prose recall. Age effects among the professors were observed on tests of reaction time, paired-associate memory, and some aspects of working memory. Age effects were not observed on measures of proactive interference and prose recall, though age-related declines are generally observed in standard groups of elderly individuals. The United States Supreme Court recently held that while psychological harm or injury is not a prerequisite to proof of liability in employment discrimination lawsuits, such harm or injury may be considered in determining employer liability. Other recent legal developments have also greatly expanded the opportunity for psychologists and other mental health professionals to contribute to determinations of both liability and damages in this legal context. This article briefly examines some of the aspects of workplace claims that evaluating mental health experts We need to address. Then the article focuses on the role of psychodiagnostic testing in the context of legal decisionmaking. Finally, the article points to gaps in knowledge regarding the role of psychodiagnostic testing in employment cases and suggests areas for future research on this timely but understudied topic. 相似文献

The studies reported here investigated the role of background music in verbal processing. The experiment was a partial replication
of Salame and Baddeley (1989), where the effect of music on the recall of digits, was examined, but included an additional
key condition where participants heard instrumental music without the words usually associated with it. In this case we used
nursery rhymes. In addition, articulatory suppression was manipulated as a tool to look at the role of working memory in the
task. The relationship between long-term memory and working memory was further explored by using an implicit memory task to
examine verbal memory effects for words associated with the music but not actually heard. The results indicated that background,
instrumental music, long-associated with words, significantly impairs concurrent verbal processing. These long-term memory

The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a psychoeducational group intervention that addressed the needs of adult children caring for aging parents. The intervention consisted of four 2-hour sessions and included 70 care givers, 54 to 72 years of age, who were currently caring for a parent 60 years of age or older. A delayed-treatment, control-group design with follow-up after a 4-week interval was used to study three primary variables identified through an extensive literature review as essential for care givers. These included knowledge, care giver burden, and skill development. Skill development did not change following participation, nor did care giver burden variables measured. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the value of selected demographic and personality variables in the prediction of rehabilitation success of handicapped individuals. Demographic data and MMPI scores of 79 clients who had been served by a state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) were used as predictor variables in a multiple-regression analysis. An attempt was made to predict three criteria: occupational level, upward mobility, and closure status. The multiple correlations for each of the three regression equations approached significance at the .05 level. Correlations significant at the .05 level, were found between age at onset, age at time of application, type of disability, and education, for one or more of the criteria. Significant beta weights were obtained for age at time of application, IQ, and the Mf, K, and Pd scales from the MMPI. 相似文献

There is accumulating evidence for the efficacy of online parent management training (PMT) programs to improve conduct problems in young children, and findings have been used to support the potential of online programs to close the research-to-practice gap in underserved rural settings. However, to date, no study has evaluated the effectiveness of online PMT under real-world conditions; that is, delivered by community practitioners as part of services-as-usual to families residing in rural communities. This has resulted in a critical lack of evidence supporting the capacity of online PMT to ameliorate actual geographical disparities in service accessibility. Accordingly, the current study evaluated effectiveness and engagement outcomes of Internet-delivered Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (I-PCIT) delivered from a community-based early childhood clinic to rural consumers. Participants were 27 mothers and their 1.5- to 4-year-old child with conduct problems (M age = 3.02, SD = 0.73) living in regional and rural New South Wales, Australia. Parent-rated and observed child conduct problems and observed parenting behaviors were assessed pre and post I-PCIT, and treatment attrition, parental satisfaction with treatment, and homework compliance provided indicators of treatment engagement. Results of linear mixed and marginal models indicated that I-PCIT produced significant improvements in parent-reported and observed child conduct problems and observed parenting behaviors, with “small” to “very large” effect sizes (ds = 0.3-1.4). Treatment retention was adequate (63%), and treatment-completing parents reported high treatment satisfaction and good homework compliance. Findings provide preliminary evidence for the real world effectiveness of I-PCIT, supporting its capacity to narrow the research-to-practice gap. Findings suggest a role for I-PCIT in a stepped care model of remote treatment for childhood conduct problems in Australia. 相似文献

Ethnic identity (EI) is influenced by many factors, but few studies have examined the relative contribution of parenting style and other factors to EI. We addressed this gap by examining the effects of family and community factors on the EI of ethnic minority students enrolled in graduate psychology programs in the United States. The results suggest that family, peers, and experiences of discrimination significantly influence EI. Familial cultural socialization was the strongest contributor to EI. We report data from an experiment in which participants performed immediate serial recall of visually presented words with or without articulatory suppression, while also performing homophone or rhyme detection. The separation between homophonous or rhyming pairs in the list was varied. According to the working memory model (Baddeley, 1986; Baddeley & Hitch, 1974), suppression should prevent articulatory recoding. Nevertheless, rhyme and homophone detection was well above chance. However, with suppression, participants showed a greater tendency to false-alarm to orthographically related foils (e.g., GIVE–FIVE).
