We evaluated the evocative effects of four conditions (high‐ and low‐preference activities, low and divided attention) and stimulant medication on the behavior of a 16‐year‐old boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and moderate mental retardation. All behavior (activity engagement, activity changes, inappropriate touching, rude behaviors, and physical aggression) improved with stimulant medication in most conditions, but undesirable behaviors were not reduced to acceptable levels in all conditions. This finding suggests that stimulant medication may be a valuable adjunct to function‐based interventions.  相似文献

External pressure on Higher Education Institutes in the United Kingdom has brought the question of the extrinsic value of academic philosophy into focus. One line of research into questions about the extrinsic value of philosophy comes from the Philosophy for Children (P4C) movement. There is a large body of literature about the benefits of P4C. This paper argues that the distinctive nature of the P4C pedagogy limits the claims made by the P4C literature about the extrinsic value of philosophy to claims about the value of P4C. While this is not a problem within the P4C literature that recognises these limitations, the paper makes three claims about why it is sometimes inappropriate to extend claims from research into the value of P4C to claims about the value of non-P4C philosophy. It argues that more research is needed to investigate the value of non-P4C philosophy.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated eyewitnesses' ability to predict their later lineup performance, known as predecision confidence. We applied calibration analysis in two experiments comparing predecision confidence (immediately after encoding but prior to a lineup) to postdecision confidence (immediately after a lineup) to determine which produces a superior relationship with lineup decision accuracy. Experiment 1 (N = 177) featured a multiple-block lineup recognition paradigm featuring several targets and lineups; Experiment 2 featured an eyewitness identification paradigm with a mock-crime video and a single lineup for each participant (N = 855). Across both experiments, postdecision confidence discriminated well between correct and incorrect lineup decisions, but predecision confidence was a poor predictor of accuracy. Moreover, simply asking for predecision confidence weakened the postdecision confidence–accuracy relationship. This implies that police should exercise caution when interviewing eyewitnesses, as they should not be asked to predict their ability to make an accurate lineup decision.  相似文献

The development of posture and locomotion provides a valuable window for understanding the ontogeny of perception-action relations. In this study, 13 infants were examined cross-sectionally while standing quietly either hands-free or while lightly touching a contact surface. Mean sway amplitude results indicate that infants use light touch for sway attenuation (≈28–40%) as has been seen previously with adults (Jeka & Lackner, 1994). Additionally, while using the contact surface, movement patterns of the head and trunk show reduced temporal coordination (≈25–40%), as well as increased temporal variability, as compared to no touch conditions. These findings are discussed with regard to the ontogeny of perception-action relations, with the overall conclusion that infants use somatosensory information in an exploratory manner to aid in the development of an accurate internal model of upright postural control.  相似文献

Researchers have suggested that examining the factors which influence appraisal reactions is important because these reactions are critical criteria of appraisal effectiveness. The current field study investigates how organizational level and knowledge of the performance appraisal system may be related to employees' reactions toward the performance appraisal system. Inferences from past research suggest that supervisory employees' unique perspective on the appraisal system may lead to more positive evaluations. The present study attempts to better explain this relationship by investigating the effect of Perceived System Knowledge (PSK) as a mediator of this relationship. Results revealed that PSK completely mediated the relationship between organizational level and appraisal reactions.  相似文献

How can we best address writing improvement for seminary students? This article describes the implementation of a Writing Assistance Program that teaches remedial skills in grammar structure and paper organization as well as mentors all students to develop their fullest writing potential. Four models of writing instruction are discussed and examples are given of the best use of each. The article concludes with lessons learned from the experience and tips for other seminaries.  相似文献

Self-reported emotional experiences and eating behaviors were studied in college students in an attempt to determine what types of emotional experiences precede and follow binge eating and how specific types of compensatory behaviors modify these experiences. First-year male and female students (N=390) were surveyed for depression, anxiety, health status, life satisfaction, and eating attitudes (EAT-26). Those reporting recurrent binge eating episodes were asked to describe their emotional feelings before and after bingeing and before and after compensatory activities. EAT-26 scores corresponding to scores previously reported for eating disordered patients were found in 9.7% of students. Binge eating was nearly twice as frequent among females (16.4%) as males (8.6%) Among females, positive relationships were found between specific EAT-26 factors scores and both anxiety and depression scores. The emotional antecedents and consequences of binge eating and of compensatory activities were compared in three sub-groups of individuals who reported recurrent bingeing with loss of self-control during binges. The three sub-groups consisted of individuals who reported, 1) bingeing without engaging in compensatory activities, 2) bingeing and compensating by means other than vomiting (fasting, exercising, or use of laxatives or diuretics), and 3) bingeing and compensating by vomiting. Regardless of the type of activity, those individuals who engaged in compensatory activities reported greater negative affect preceding binge episodes than those who did not compensate. In addition, contrary to expectations, negative affect did not decrease, but instead increased significantly, following binge episodes and decreased immediately before and after compensatory activities.  相似文献

Inspired by clinical contacts with a number of clients with a depressed relative, this research focuses upon how a person in such circumstances is affected. Based upon a self-selected sample of members of the Depression Alliance a postal questionnaire and detailed interviews were conducted. The authors propose a four-phase model of the caregiving experience and consider the following questions: how do families account for depression? How is a family's emotional life affected? What have been caregivers' experiences with mental health professionals? What are the factors which assist or hinder their search for help? Is there a role for counselling and if so, is there a best time for it? Findings support the notion that family caregivers are a group at risk and that their need to talk about their mutative experiences is optimally met through supportive and exploratory counselling once patient-state is stable.  相似文献

Aims: This paper presents a model of a group-based intervention for the treatment of clients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) referred to secondary mental health care services, which has been developed by the authors over the last five years. Method: Groups are not a common form of treatment design for this client group, however the available literature is briefly reviewed and the common issues that informed the design are identified. Following this additional technique of neuropsychological theories, Mindfulness, and socialisation are presented and a brief rationale for their inclusion provided. Quantitative and Qualitative outcome measures of the most recent group are discussed with respect to the utility and validity of the model. Conclusion and implications for practice: It is concluded that the group has good ecological as well as outcome validity and provided a method of linking together evidence-based practice (EBP) and practice-based evidence (PBE) movements.  相似文献
