Creaturely life is finite life. Transhumanism suggests that human life will be better and even fulfilled in a new way, if humans can overcome some of the finite conditions now given. I argue that there are theological, ethical, and biological points to be taken into consideration that may challenge the transhuman vision of a good life. The finite conditions of human life are what makes human life human, and these conditions are also part of why the deeper meaning of human life is realized in love for others, and not in the quest for making one's own life go on (almost) endlessly. In addition to looking at some material from popular culture and the philosopher Hans Jonas, the article also draws on recent discussions on transhumanism present in contemporary theology.  相似文献

Abstract

Semantic and emotional priming below objective detection threshold was investigated using a binocular pattern masking procedure. In the first experiment lexical decision time to emotionally aversive target stimuli was significantly faciliated by the presentation of emotionally aversive primes and primes semantically related to the target, thus replicating the emotional and semantic priming effects found supraliminally in Hill and Kemp-Wheeler (1989). In Experiment 2, a significant semantic priming effect was again found but the subliminal emotional priming effect of Experiment 1 did not replicate.  相似文献

Recent studies indicate that anxious participants show cognitive biases favouring threat‐related stimuli. However, most of this evidence comes from Stroop tasks, which are believed to tap a narrow range of executive skills. The current study investigated phobic fear and cognitive biases using tasks designed to tap a wider range of executive processes: the standard Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST; Heaton, 1981), a modified version that included emotionally salient pictorial stimuli; the Spider Phobia Card Sorting Test (SPCST); and an emotionally valenced version of a verbal fluency task (VF). A total of 80 female participants (38 lower and 42 higher scorers on the Spider Phobia Questionnaire; SPQ) drawn from a larger sample of 126 completed either the standard WCST or the SPCST, the VF, and several mood measures. On the card sort, the higher SPQ SPCST group showed a significantly lower proportion of conceptual level responses, required a greater number of trials to complete the first category, and sorted significantly fewer stimulus cards to the spider target card than the lower SPQ SPCST group, or than either of the groups in the WCST condition who sorted to neutral target cards. On the VF, the higher SPQ group generated significantly more exemplars to the category “spiders” than the lower SPQ group. Therefore, fearful participants seemed to avoid or neglect the spider cue on the card sort, but performed better in generating “spiders” exemplars on the VF, as compared to the nonfearful group. Implications and limitations of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Many researchers have tackled the question of how behavior is influenced by its outcomes. Some have adopted a nonmechanistic (functional) perspective that attempts to describe the influence of outcomes on behavior. Others have adopted a mechanistic (cognitive) perspective that attempts to explain the influence of outcomes on behavior. Orthogonal to this distinction, some have focused on the influence of outcomes that a behavior had in the past, whereas others also consider the influence of outcomes that a behavior might have in the future. In this article, we relate these different perspectives with the goal of reducing misunderstandings and fostering collaborations between researchers who adopt different perspectives on the common question of how behavior is influenced by its outcomes.  相似文献

Exposure to narratives may have beneficial effects on children's social-cognitive development because narratives provide information about the social world and often require social understanding for story comprehension. In the current study, we examined the influence of narratives presented via different media (books, audiobooks, TV/films) on theory-of-mind performance and mental verb comprehension in a sample of 114 three- to six-year-old preschool children. Parents' reports on the number of (children's) books at home, the overall duration of TV/film and audio media exposure, the frequency of shared book reading, watching children's TV/films and audiobook listening, and parent–child discussions about media content were collected. Children's theory-of-mind performance and mental verb comprehension were measured as dependent variables. When gender, age, language skills and parental education were controlled, only the number of children's books, shared book reading frequency, audio-media exposure and audiobook usage significantly predicted children's theory-of-mind scores. None of the media exposure or the parent–child discussion variables had significant incremental effects above the family and child characteristics on mental verb comprehension.  相似文献
