A haptic error: Skew in a symmetrical curve

Symmetrically curved edges are often felt to be skewed, i.e., the highpoint feels off center. The direction of the skew depends on the direction of the hand’s scanning movement, the highpoint being felt to be towards the right when the hand scans in a left to right direction and towards the left when scanning right to left. The result clarifies some earlier studies and raises questions about relationships between the nature of the scanning movement and the quality of judgment.     

“I've Been a Long Time Leaving”: The Role of Limited Skill Transferability in Increasing Suicide‐Related Cognitions and Behavior in Veterinarians

Barriers to occupational mobility were investigated to determine whether they increased reported suicide‐related cognitions and behavior over 12 months. This was explored in a two‐wave longitudinal study. Intention to leave, depression, perceived skill transferability, and suicide‐related cognitions and behavior was measured at both time points approximately 12 months apart. Results indicated that when there was a high intention to leave at T1, reported suicide‐related cognitions and behavior increased over 12 months only when skill transferability to other professions was perceived to be limited. Findings support the role of limited occupational mobility in suicide‐related cognitions and behavior.     

The Journal of Consumer Behaviour's first 20 years

We analyzed and compared the Journal of Consumer Behaviour content in its first 20 years of publication. Articles were categorized into seven topics (Internal Factors, External Factors, Decision Process, Social Issues, Internet, Managerial Issues, and Research Methods) with subtopics. Authorship, citations based on Google Scholar, geographic representation of authors, and methodologies employed across the first 20 years were also explored. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for the journal and consumer behaviour. This analysis provides suggestions for future research to be published by the Journal of Consumer Behaviour.     

Religion and Spirituality in the Meaning–Making and Coping Experiences of African American Women: A Qualitative Analysis

This qualitative study examines the ways in which African American women use religion/spirituality to cope and to construct meaning in times of adversity. Content analysis of the narratives of a sample of African American women respondents ( n = 23) revealed a set of eight nonoverlapping themes that explicate religiosity/spirituality's role in meaning–making and coping. Findings suggest that religion/spirituality help women to (1) interrogate and accept reality, (2) gain the insight and courage needed to engage in spiritual surrender, (3) confront and transcend limitations, (4) identify and grapple with existential questions and life lessons, (5) recognize purpose and destiny, (6) define character and act within subjectively meaningful moral principles, (7) achieve growth, and (8) trust in the viability of transcendent sources of knowledge and communication. Narrative examples are used to elucidate each theme. Findings point to the importance of relationships and intimacy in the meaning–making enterprise. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.
