Global precedence (GP) occurs when individuals exhibit the tendency to notice global, or holistic, information before they notice local, or component, parts of a visual stimulus. Factors such as meaningfulness of components are held constant when measuring GP; however, varying such factors informs us about the underlying mechanisms of GP. In addition, investigating these effects developmentally has increased the understanding of global-local processing. This experiment examines the effect of meaningfulness (letters vs. nonletters) on adults' (n = 24) and 5-year-old children's (n = 23) GP. Adults and children were more accurate if there was one nonletter component, and children were more accurate when the target was located at the local level. However, adults and children were faster if both levels were letters. The developmental path of low-level sensory factors may differ from that of high-level cognitive factors in visual processing, and a general mechanism may account for this. 相似文献

In this study we explored the relation between maternal and paternal depressive symptoms and toddler adjustment in a community
sample, testing direct, additive, and interactive models of parental depressive symptoms and child adjustment. Participants
were 49 families with 30-month-old children. Data were collected on maternal and paternal depressive symptoms and marital
quality, as well as on toddler internalizing and externalizing behavior. The data supported an additive, but not interactive,
model of prediction to externalizing behavior, such that maternal and paternal symptoms each accounted for unique variance
in the prediction of toddler externalizing. Models predicting toddler internalizing were not significant. Maternal reports
of marital quality, but not paternal reports of marital quality, reduced the magnitude of the relation between symptoms and
child externalizing when entered as a covariate. Implications for depression screening of parents are discussed. 相似文献

This study examined the effects of 4 subtypes of social support (tangible, affective, positive social interaction, and emotional/informational) and gender on the severity and duration of depressive symptoms within the general adult Canadian population. Data were collected from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS; Statistics Canada, 2002 ). Upon meeting predetermined criteria, 6,316 participants were included in the study. The findings suggest that, overall, positive social interaction was significantly associated with decreases in depression severity; while emotional/informational support was significantly associated with increases in depression severity. Positive social interaction and emotional/informational support appeared to significantly decrease the duration of depression. Interesting gender differences also emerged among the 4 subtypes of social support. Implications of the findings are discussed. 相似文献

The present article describes a software program in Visual Basic .NET designed to simulate three slot machines on a computer
screen. This software is described in detail regarding utility, downloading, and usage; and data are presented illustrating
the software’s potential for researchers interested in gambling behavior. A simulation of multiple slot machines such as this
enables researchers to evaluate players’ preferences across various machines. In the highlighted experiment, 18 recreational
slot machine players played the software for extra course credit and a chance at cash prizes. All participants played a version
of the simulation in which every 5th response on average was a win, whereas the remaining trials were a loss. However, on
those loss trials, a varying distribution of almost wins or near misses (i.e., two winning symbols on the payoff line and
the final winning symbol directly above or below the payoff line) were presented in percentages of 15, 30, or 45. While no
preferences across the three options could be predicted on the basis of reinforcement history alone, deviations from equal
choices across the games were noted and appeared to be the result of the presentations of near-miss losing trials. Implications

General anesthesia provides an alternative to typical laboratory paradigms for investigating implicit learning. We assess the evidence that a simple type of learning--priming--can occur without consciousness. Although priming has been shown to be a small but persistent phenomenon in surgical patients (Merikle & Daneman, 1996) there is reason to question whether it occurs implicitly due to problems in detecting awareness using typical clinical signs. This paper reviews the published studies on priming during anesthesia that have included a measure of awareness or of anesthetic depth. We conclude that perceptual priming, but not conceptual priming, takes place in the absence of conscious awareness. 相似文献

This reflection focuses on lived experience with the Technological Other (Quasi-Other) while pursuing creative video and film activities. In the last decade work in the video and film industries has been transformed through digital manipulation and enhancement brought about by increasingly sophisticated computer technologies. The rules of the craft have not changed but the relationship the artist/editor experiences with these new digital tools has brought about increasingly interesting existential experiences in the creative process. How might this new way of being with technology change the craft and the crafter? Through a phenomenological understanding of Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Don Ihde, and their contributions to the human-technology conversation, this essay moves to reveal the lived experiences of artists/editors who use computers to create by means of film and digital video formats. Older adults process emotional information differently than younger adults and may demonstrate less of a negativity bias on cognitive tasks. The Iowa Gambling Task designed by A. Bechara, H. Damasio, D. Tranel, and A. R. Damasio (1997) has been used to examine the integration of emotion and cognition in a risky-choice decision task and may give insight into differences in the decision-making strategies in younger and older adults. Eighty-eight younger adults (18-34 years) and 67 older adults (65-88 years) completed the Iowa Gambling Task. Using a theoretical decomposition of the task designed by J. R. Busemeyer and J. C. Stout (2002), the authors found that both groups were successful at solving the task but used very different strategies that reflected each group's strength. For younger adults, that strength was learning and memory. For older adults, that strength was an accurate representation of wins and losses (valence). 相似文献

This study examines the quality of the transition into employment roles among a socioeconomically diverse cohort of 1,143 high school seniors who were interviewed as seniors in 1998 and 2 years later. Focusing on both subjective and objective dimensions of work adaptation, analyses examine differences in these outcomes associated with taking a high school career-major versus a more traditional academic program. This type of major is intended to assist in the career development and economic adaptation of more disadvantaged young adults and follows from an ecological model emphasizing the importance of connections between educational and employment institutions in the socialization of young people. Results indicate small but significant effects of having the career-major for the perceptual variables. Group differences were not found for the variables assessing more objective qualities of their jobs. The discrepancy between subjective and objective outcomes may suggest a short-term psychological optimism in the absence of an objective situation that would justify this view. Discussion centers on the need for stronger institutional support for school-work connections. 相似文献
