This paper cites certain issues of concern in the area of assessment of anxiety and the anxiety disorders. It attempts to describe, in general terms, the potential of behavioral testing for clarifying these issues and for using these tests to supplement clinical interviews, rating scales, and self-report measures. Moreover, the paper describes a potential compatibility between objective behavioral testing and the most recent (third revision)Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.The opinions expressed in this paper are those of the author alone and do not necessarily reflect the position of the National Institute of Mental Health.  相似文献

Measures of goal attractiveness, self-perceived energization, and self-perceived tension were taken immediately before 55 young male subjects were to perform an easy, difficult, or impossible motor activity in order to avoid an unpleasant noise. Results showed a greater magnitude of goal valence, and higher energization and tension in the difficult task condition than in the easy task condition. Subjects in the impossible task condition reported reduced energy relative to subjects in the difficult task conditions; however, tension and goal attractiveness scores did not differ significantly between these conditions. Six college students participated in matching-to-sample tasks. Conditioned emotional response (CER) training consisted of pairing a tone with a "painful" level of shock. Three of the subjects demonstrated response suppression, one subject showed facilitation, and two showed no change. Analysis of response rate during the tone interval indicated that, for those subjects who showed response suppression, the decrease in response rate was greatest immediately before onset of the unconditioned stimulus. This temporal discrimination was similar to that obtained with infrahumans.  相似文献

The effect of a brief appointment reminder for mental-health center applicants is reported. A standardized phone message was delivered by an administrative staff member one to three days before the appointment and a sequential experimental design alternating baseline and phone message conditions was used to assess the effects of the procedure. The no-show rate averages were 32%, 11%, 25%, and 14% respectively. The cost of the procedure was $162.00, which was totally recovered when only six appointments were kept. Since over 1000 patients were involved in the study, the return on the investment of $162.00 is considerable. Implications for this procedure are discussed for other community mental-health centers and for other community care-giving agencies.  相似文献
