This paper was first read at the 1988 Annual Meeting of the International Institute of Philosophy in Stockholm, Sweden. The theme of the meeting was Descartes and the Contemporary Philosophy of Mind, which helped to explain the angle of my approach and the first few sentences of the paper. Morally, this paper thus should appear with the rest of the proceedings of the Stockholm meeting in a later number of this journal. However, the interrelations of my paper and Lucia Vaina's are so close that it makes best sense to publish them together. 相似文献

Omitting experimental data is often considered a violation of scientific integrity. If we consider experimental inquiry as
a questioning process, omitting data is seen to be merely an example of tentatively rejecting (‘bracketing’) some of nature’s
answers. Such bracketing is not only occasionally permissible; sometimes it is mandated by optimal interrogative strategies.
When to omit data is therefore a strategic rather than ethical question. These points are illustrated by reference to Millikan’s

Abstract - Family characteristics influence children's behavioral development, but so do variations in schools, neighborhoods, and communities. We documented extrafamilial environmental effects by fitting maximum likelihood models to questionnaire data collected from double dyads consisting of twins and their classmate controls. The classmate controls in each double dyad were genetic strangers living in separate households, but they shared school, neighborhood, and community environments with their yoked twin pair and with one another. At ages 11 to 12, the control classmates showed significant similarities in religious practices and smoking and drinking patterns, demonstrating that environmental influences outside the family affect children's behavioral development. Familial self-selection of residential neighborhoods may have contributed to these results, but direct effects of variation across communities, neighborhoods, and schools cannot be dismissed, and such effects warrant further study. 相似文献

The modern notion of the axiomatic method developed as a part of the conceptualization of mathematics starting in the nineteenth
century. The basic idea of the method is the capture of a class of structures as the models of an axiomatic system. The mathematical
study of such classes of structures is not exhausted by the derivation of theorems from the axioms but includes normally the
metatheory of the axiom system. This conception of axiomatization satisfies the crucial requirement that the derivation of
theorems from axioms does not produce new information in the usual sense of the term called depth information. It can produce
new information in a different sense of information called surface information. It is argued in this paper that the derivation
should be based on a model-theoretical relation of logical consequence rather than derivability by means of mechanical (recursive)
rules. Likewise completeness must be understood by reference to a model-theoretical consequence relation. A correctly understood
notion of axiomatization does not apply to purely logical theories. In the latter the only relevant kind of axiomatization
amounts to recursive enumeration of logical truths. First-order “axiomatic” set theories are not genuine axiomatizations.
The main reason is that their models are structures of particulars, not of sets. Axiomatization cannot usually be motivated

Neuroticism is a predictor of many health problems. To study the determinants of within‐subject change in neuroticism, three hypotheses were tested: (i) subjects who experienced stressful life events (SLEs) show an increase in neuroticism; (ii) high baseline neuroticism moderated this effect; and (iii) recent SLEs had a greater impact on neuroticism than distant SLEs. Data came from the Finnish Twin Cohort. Neuroticism data were collected in 1975 and 1981 and SLEs data in 1981 (n = 21 085). By entering baseline neuroticism as a predictor for neuroticism at follow‐up, the outcome measure was change in neuroticism. Changes in neuroticism were predicted from SLE indices or their interaction with baseline neuroticism. Timing of SLEs was taken into account by distinguishing recent from distant SLEs. To control for confounding by shared genes and environments, both within‐twin pair and between‐twin pair effects were tested for monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs separately. Neuroticism's six‐year stability was high (r = .58, p < .001). Exposure to SLEs modestly increased neuroticism (βs > .55, ps < .001), unconfounded by shared genes. This effect was not moderated by high baseline neuroticism. Recent SLEs (.09 < βs < .15) had more impact than distant SLEs (.03 < βs < .11; ps < .01). In conclusion, the findings strongly supported a model of environmentally driven SLEs causing dynamic fluctuations around a person's set point of neuroticism.
