The Employment Interview Workshop: A Focus on Communication Skills

The employment interview is essentially a communication situation in which skill in communication is the important determinant of success. In a workshop that focuses attention on those critical interview communication skills that often distinguish the successful applicant, the authors discuss what makes a competent communicator and describe possible workshop components and their integration into successful training workshops.     

Test Anxiety Workshops Using Undergraduates as Leaders

Many college students delay seeking counseling for test anxiety until too little time remains before the exams for adequate scheduling with counselors. A one-hour test-anxiety workshop using 13 specially trained undergraduate leaders served 195 students with test-anxiety problems. Most (89%–94%) reported beneficial effects from the low-cost workshops.     

VALIDATING SYNTHETIC VALIDATION: COMPARING TRADITIONAL AND SYNTHETIC VALIDITY COEFFICIENTS

We describe a unique application of a synthetic validation technique to a selection system development project in a large organization. Job analysis data were collected from 4,725 job incumbents and 619 supervisors, and were used to identify 11 job families and 27 job components. We developed 12 tests to predict performance on these job components and conducted a concurrent validation study to collect test and job component data for 1,926 incumbents. We created a test composite for each job component and then chose a test battery for each job family based on its relevant job components. Synthetic validity coefficients were computed for each test battery and compared to traditional validity coefficients that were computed within job families with large sample sizes. The synthetic validity coefficient was very close to the within-family validity coefficient for most job families and was within the bounds of sampling error for all job families. Validities tended to be highest when predictors were weighted according to the number of job components to which they were relevant and job component criterion measures were unit weighted.     

A TRINITARIAN GRAMMAR OF SIN

This essay offers a critical reading of David Kelsey's hamartiology in Eccentric Existence. I elucidate Kelsey's “trinitarian grammar of sin,” which charts how human lives characteristically “miss the mark” of God's creating, consummating, and reconciling ways of relating to us. Kelsey uses this dynamic pattern of divine relating to illuminate the appropriate responses of the Christian life—faith, hope, and love—and their fundamental distortions. I commend three major contributions of Kelsey's hamartiology: his parsing of the relationship between sin and moral evil, his overturning of modernity's anthropocentric paradigm of sin, and his reconstruction of original sin. I conclude with three clusters of questions relating to: first, Kelsey's root paradigm of sin as idolatry, second, his use of impurity and stain language to describe original sin, and third, what is at stake in crafting theological anthropology in the analytical style of Eccentric Existence.     

Philosophy, Social Institutions, and the Ethics of Belief: A Response to Buchanan

abstract   First, Allen Buchanan, in the version of his paper entitled 'Philosophy and public policy: a role for social moral epistemology' that he presented at the workshop on 'Philosophy and Public Policy' held at the British Academy in London on March 8^th 2008, seems to imply that professional, academic philosophers have had little impact upon public policy. I mention an area where it can be argued in response that they have had a more benign, as well as a more widespread, influence on society than Buchanan acknowledges in that version of his paper: in legislation concerning animal welfare. Second, I question whether or not the liberal commitment to freedom of religion is compatible with the ethics of belief that Buchanan appears to advocate .
